4 2018 PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS REVIEW STANFORD, Calif. - The OREGON men s team continued its dominance with a 12th straight Conference title, while the USC women s team ended the Ducks nine-year reign with its first crown in more than two decades at the 2018 Pac-12 at Cobb Track and Angell Field on Sunday. No. 11 nationally ranked Oregon totaled 174 points the fourth-most in meet history to extend its record streak of men s team championships to 12 and total titles to 19. Host and No. 23 ranked STANFORD recorded its best finish since 2003 in second place with 125 points, followed by No. 9 ranked USC in third with 118. On the women s side, No. 3 ranked USC amassed 170 points to post a 16-point victory and dethrone No. 2 ranked Oregon for its first Conference crown since ARIZONA STATE s Bowerman candidate Maggie Ewen cemented her legacy as the greatest female thrower in Pac-12 Championships history with her second straight treble event victories in the hammer, shot put and discus to garner Athlete of the Meet honors with 30 points for the second year in a row. ARIZONA freshman Jordan Geist secured Athlete of the Meet accolades with a meet-best 22 points on the men s side, adding a discus title and seventh-place finish in the hammer throw on Sunday to his shot put crown on Saturday. Wind played a factor in preventing several Championships records from falling, but Bowerman candidates Michael Norman, Rai Benjamin and Kendall Ellis all shined on Sunday. Norman became only the third male to double in the 200- and 400-meter dashes at the Championships, Benjamin repeated as 400-meter hurdles champion and Ellis set a meet record with the second-fastest 400 in collegiate history. Including Ellis record 400 mark, four meet records fell in total. Ewen became the only female and one of only two athletes - male or female - to own two Championships records with record marks in the hammer and shot put. STANFORD s Vanessa Fraser set a new record in an extremely fast 10,000-meter run PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS (hosted by Stanford University, Stanford, Calif.) Team Standings MEN 1. Both Brooks-Johnson and Williams finished in the top two in every event to secure 10 points for their teams heading into next weekend s Pac-12 Track & Field Championships at Stanford. Also the Pac-12 heptathlon champion in 2015 and 2017, Brooks-Johnson joins former Cougar Ellannee Richardson ( ), STANFORD s Tracye Lawyer ( ), ARIZONA STATE s Jacquelyn Johnson (2004, 2006, 2008) and OREGON s Brianne Theisen ( , 2012) as the only three-time winners of the event. Despite her consistency, which included a PR in the long jump (5.89m/19-4) and second-place finish in the javelin (41.60m/136-6) to open Sunday s events, Brooks-Johnson actually trailed entering the 800-meter run finale. However, Brooks-Johnson left no doubt with victory in the 800, crossing the line in 2: Her 5,977 points moved her into third on this season s NCAA performance list and ninth on the Conference s all-time list. There was considerably less drama in the decathlon as Williams cruised to victory by more than 1,600 points to become only the second winner from Stanford along with Travis Clark in Williams winning total of 7,925 points was a season-high and good for fifth-best in the nation to date. Williams set a lifetime-best in claiming the discus (43.01m/141-1), won the 110-meter hurdles (14.44) and pole vault (5.25m/ ), and finished second in both the javelin (45.92m/150-8) and 1,500-meter run (4:37.91) on Sunday to post one of the most dominant decathlon victories in league history Pac-12 Decathlon standings 1.
