The summer series features the usual variety of challenging terrain and footing that has long made the events memorable and fun. With the kids dashes, the series has been a favorite tradition for more than a generation. FARC s best attended meeting is the Annual Scholarships, with a guest speaker - Wed., May 21, 7 PM at Tighe Park. Fun run at 6:30! The 10K was praised by many as it uniquely combined roads and trails in Freehold s Michael Tighe and Jackson Mills Parks on March 23, On the heels of one of the coldest and snowiest winters in two decades, race day followed a night in which temperatures did not dip below freezing, a rarity this March although the calendar showed spring had officially come with the vernal equinox days before. FARC Hosted the 2013 NJ RACE WALK Series: 2014 World Cup Trials in Whiting, NJ, March 30 FARC s New 2014 Executive Officers! In an early stage of the race-walk competition, 20K racewalkers Ray Sharp (MN), Alejandro Chavez, #2 (TX), John Cody Risch (MI), Rachel Seaman (Canada), and Nick Christie, #4 (CA) do battle.

2 See results on page 3 and FARCnj.com St. Paddy s Day Races More than 330 runners and race walkers and 100+ FARC volunteers helped the Freehold Area Running Club celebrate the 25 th anniversary of its St. Paddy s races, on March 23. The Shamrock 10 K and Leprechaun 5 K were held Sun. AM at Tighe &Jackson Mills Parks off Georgia and Jackson Mills Roads in Freehold Township. On a seasonably cool day, Red Bank s Ben Hutterer averaged a very respectable 5:11 per mile, and led the race by up to one-half mile in the late stages and won the Shamrock 10 K by more than three minutes in 32:09. Runner-up Jeff Propert from Wall clocked in at 35:12, and Wall s Chris Whitehead was another half-mile back in third (38:17). Female winner Jacqui Gordon from Point Pleasant was sixth overall (40:38). Completing the overall top 10 were Freehold s Chad Saffron (39:53), Brick s Joseph Baldasare (40:01), Gordon, Old Bridge s Thomas Hunt (41:19), Matawan s Patrick Applegate (41:21), Southampton, Long Island, NY s Megan Gubbins (41:23) second among the women and Pine Beach s Bobby Cavallo (42:19). The women s top 10 behind 1) Gordon &2) Gubbins were Wall s Jayne Condon (42:53), Manalapan s Maggie Freeman (43:07), Matawan s Rachel Kenney (44:01), Sea Girt s Debra Keating (44:32), Princeton s Mary Sutton (44:53), Morganville s Beth Shapiro (45:06), Hamilton s Cynthia Cirri (46:09) and Freehold s Tara Moore (47:25). Crossing the line first in the Leprechaun 5 K, which was celebrating its 20 th anniversary, was Robbinsville s Nicole Strand, as she beat the men to the tape in 18:01.3. Yardville s Jeffrey Angelini was the first male across the line in 18:40. Completing the top 10 were Manalapan s Nick Ackerman (19:06.6), Manalapan s William Spector (19:34.2), Freehold s Paul Gilly (19:52.9), East Windsor s Amy Bernstein (19:56.4) second among the women Freehold s Anthony Crivello (20:32.3), Yardville s Steve Ziegler (21:01.9), Ridgefield s Chris Adamo (21:07.3) and Manalapan s Kyle Spector (21:43.3). Completing the women s top 10 were Aberdeen s Kathleen Briton (23:46.7), Jackson s Tiffany Flioner (23:50.4), Eatontown s Michele Bernich (24:02.3), New Monmouths s Robin Hagman (24:43.9), Freehold s Alexandra Simon (25:32), New Egypt s Michelle Knox (25:42.9) and Freehold s Ileana Kolovich (26:09.8). In the St. Paddy s Day race-walk division, John Fredericks (Brick) placed first in 1:03:27, Fred Linkhart (Oakhurst), FARC s 2013 race walker of the year, placed second in 1:07:09, Ray Robertson (Ocean) placed third in 1:07:40, and Ben Ottmer (80 of Freehold) placed fourth in 1:17:36. For women, there were no race-walk finishers. Maria Paul was recuperating from an injury and volunteered at the races, as did long-time race walker Donna Cetrullo. The oldest runner to complete the race was FARC s Olie Nelson, 78 (1:02:17), of Farmingdale, who finished within nearly two minutes of Imme Dyson of Princeton, NJ. (1:00:28). FARC s Carl Danziger, 70, of Freehold finished at 56:19. As usual, there was a great party after the race for the runners. 3 Celebrate Fruit, Bagels, Condiments Hot Dogs Complete results are found on From the Host Club of the 2013 NJ RACE WALK Series: The Freehold Area Running Club Hosted the 2014 World Cup Trials at Harry Wright Lake in Whiting on 3/30/14 The two-time Olympian John Nunn, 36 (1:26:46), was the male 20K champion. and Rachel Seaman, 28 (1:30:43), was the female 20K champion, while setting a women s 20,000 meter Canadian Record. Maria Michta (1:31:11) set an American women s record. John Fredericks (65-69), and Patrick Bivona (70-74). The women s title went to Erin Taylor-Talcott, 1:44:26. The club was selected by USA Track and Field (USATF) to conduct the trials, which determined the American World Cup race walking team that will compete at this year s IAAF World Race Walking Cup in Taicang, China, in May. To be eligible for the World Cup team, a walker had to not only place at these March 30 championships, but he or she had to meet the minimum time standard established by the IAAF over the previous year. Race Director Ron Salvio of FARC was the brainchild of the event, working untold countless hours to make the event happen and happen successfully! Event Article contributor: Avram Shapiro The 2014 US National Race Walk 20K World Cup trials were held on March 30 at FARC s new racewalking venue at Harry Wright Lake in the Whiting section of Manchester Township. The races, hosted by the Freehold Area Running Club, were a great success in spite of the rainy and damp conditions. Two records were established by men and women representing different nations in the 20K. Top U.S. competitors represented 15 states and were joined by elite athletes from Canada, Colombia, Greece, Mexico, and Venezuela. In the 20,000 meters (for men and women ages 19 and older), the U.S. winners were two-time Olympian John Nunn, 36, of California in a time of 1:26:46 and Maria Michta, 27, of New York with a U.S. Woman s record of 1:31:10. The junior (under age 19) 10,000 meter winners were Anthony Peters from Illinois in 47:27 and Brenda McCollum from Kansas in 51:56. In addition, a woman s 20,000 meter Canadian Record 1:30:43 was set by Rachel Seaman, 28, who was also the women s overall leader. Race-walk judges were selected at the international (IAAF) level, and were joined by USA Track & Field timers and course umpires, backed by scores of local lap counters and other volunteers. Hosted by FARC and race director Ron Salvio, the event also served as the USATF-NJ 20 kilometer championship (all divisions), won by Michael Minnozzi (1:31:11), followed in the men s open category by Jonathan Hallman and Richard Leuttchau, with age group winners John Soucheck (45-49), Dave Talcott (50-54), Timothy Chelius (55-59), Fred Linkhart (60-64), Start of 20K & 10K Race Walk Competitions US top woman: Maria Michta (NY), & Minnozzi (OH) See the straight leg as it passes fwd under race walker Complete results are found on There are only 8-9 weeks until the Summer Series 5Ks, 1-mile fun runs, and Kids Summer Nights races start on June 25.
