7 When you are one of the world s leading Super Yacht builders and have already launched 60 exquisite yachts including the ground breaking The Maltese Falcon, it s hard to better what was already considered perfection, but with their latest launch the Italian shipyard Perini Navi have once again outdone themselves. Sybaris (named after the ancient Greek settlement in southern Italy whose population was renowned for its pursuit of life s pleasures) is the second largest yacht that Perini Navi have built and it s a ground breaker in all areas from the sleek and sculpted hull and deckhouse, to the serenely sophisticated interior styling. Perini Navi s in-house Technical & Design Office worked very closely with the boat owners to translate their vision of what they saw as the perfect sailing yacht, into a reality. With a clear idea of what the owners wanted it was then up to the engineers and builders to deliver, and deliver they did. Sybaris has an overall length of 70,00 meters, a beam of 13,24 meters and a draft, with the centerboard down, of 11,74 meters. This slender, extremely powerful hull is there to support a massive sail plan. With a main, mizzen and reacher set the total sail area is over 2,300 square meters. That, for our American friends, is an astounding 25,000 square feet. When the boat bears away onto a broad reach and the asymmetrical spinnaker is set the total sail area jumps up closer to 4,000 square meters or over 40,000 square feet. That s a lot of canvas pushing and pulling the yacht through the water. To manage the sail plan the designers worked closely with the engineers at Rondal to create a composite electric in-boom furling system. They also installed variable speed captive winches and furling units which are synchronized and monitored by the Perini Navi Automated Sail Handling System. It s push button sailing on an intensely powerful yacht that handles like a boat half its size. While the power and sail handling ability is admired by those who understand the intricacies of a modern sailboat, for the rest of the world who are not as versed in the art of sailing there are always the sleek lines and stunning interior design to admire. Stunning is not a hyperbolic adjective tossed out there to impress; the interior of the yacht is beyond stunning. The openplan layout, clean lines and custom-designed furniture made of the highest quality materials provide a crisp and contemporary style that acts as a muted backdrop to the bold works of art from the owner s private collection. To accomplish their vision of a unique, contemporary interior the owners contracted PH design Studio, a Miami based design company that has been responsible for some of the most lauded interior spaces both on yachts and on land. Their goal was to create a state-of-the-art yacht that reflected the owners spirit. Peter Hawrylewicz is the principal designer at PHDesign and he noted, we wanted to create an interior that would be perceived as special and original in the yachting world. One way in which they accomplished this was to instal titanium ceilings that would softly bounce the light to complement the muted tones of the American Ash millwork, yet the overall interior styling is so much more than just this one detail. It s an open plan that uses natural light and incredible views to provide an almost ethereal experience for the owner and guests. 19

10 Below decks, Sybaris can accommodate the large crew needed to run the yacht as well as guest cabins and an enormous owners stateroom that spans the full beam of the yacht. All the way forward are five double crew cabins as well as a fairly substantial captains cabin. Aft of the crew quarters is the galley and crew area, and then there are five double guest cabins each as tastefully decorated and comfortable as the next. Further aft is the owners quarters which features a massive bed and a comfortable sitting area as well as a work area. There are his and her bath and showers separated by a large dressing area. While the accommodation is on the same level as the engines and generators, the engineers at Perini Navi have taken sound and vibration containment to a new level. One of the most significant contributions to achieving this goal has been mounting the engine and gearbox components on a vibration damping cradle that is then elastically fixed to the hull structure as a single unit. Once you leave the accommodation deck and rise the mid-deck area, you are greeted by a simple, elegant and spacious main salon. This 151 square meter area features sculpted pillars that have been milled from solid titanium to support floating travel trunks clad with alligator skin. These travel trunks replace built in credenzas and allow the space to be open and modern looking. The effect is modern with a remote reminiscence of Old World travel, notes Peter Hawrylewicz. The allure lies in the confluence of these two temperaments. The main salon has a dining area that can seat 12 and is adjacent to a comfortable place where guests can sit and relax and enjoy a coffee or fizzy drink. Again there is abundant use of natural light and large windows that welcome the view inside. Perhaps the most bold feature of the yacht is the enormous 117 square meter fly bridge. These fly bridges are a signature feature of the Perini Navi brand and this one is one of the sleekest and most unobtrusive we have seen on a Perini Navi yacht. Forward on the fly bridge is the pilot house where all the yachts controls are located. The captain has a clear view of the open ocean ahead as well as being able to see how the various systems that control the sails and rig are working. It s an extremely high tech area that reminds one of a Science Fiction movie. In close contact with the pilot house is yet another very comfortable area where the owners and guests can sit and relax. There is also another dining area further aft that features a circular table that can seat ten in comfort. 22

I can only imagine what it would look like to have this enormous yacht bearing down on you, sails sheeted on hard, rail down, bow thundering toward you and you watch as she sails on by.

21 In the last decade, we have become accustomed to these large yachts that resemble floating pieces of art and Sybaris is no exception. This yacht is a piece of art, but more than that Sybaris is a powerful, elegant sailboat. The rig and sails are in proportion to the hull and underbody, and the combination is quite striking. I can only imagine what it would look like to have this enormous yacht bearing down on you, sails sheeted on hard, rail down, bow thundering toward you and you watch as she sails on by. The loads on the carbon fiber masts and standing rigging are enormous but they are being constantly monitored by an advanced monitoring system that provides constant feedback on rig loads via a series of sensors. I can also only imagine what it must feel like to be on the fly bridge almost six meters above the water, cold drink in hand, a staggering view all around you, and the thrust and power of a tightly strung Super Yacht beneath your feet. Most of all I can imagine the yacht at the end of the day when the sails have been furled, and the spray is starting to turn to salt on the deck. The engine hums as the captain guides the craft through the narrow opening of a South Pacific atoll. The centerboard has been raised and the draft reduced from 11,74 meters to a more manageable 4,54 meters. Within the atoll you are surrounded by nature s breathtaking beauty. The chef announces that dinner is ready and the owners and guests gather on the aft deck to dine al fresco. Glasses clink, a light breeze rustles the crystal clear water, and the owners realize that what started as an idea has turned into a reality; a stunningly gorgeous reality.
