Congratulations to all our award winners from season , our grateful thanks to the Sailing Committee for their dedication, thanks to Ken Hill and Don Ridge for manning our control room weekly. Now the AGM is done and dusted we head into the new year with a much-altered committee; stepping down were Ron Mason, Warren Matheson, Mark Hawkins, Hugo Dunlop and Johnny Maher; thank you so much for all that you have achieved throughout the years. Good luck in the real world! Ron has kindly arranged a working group who fortnightly attend to the many tasks around the club which largely go unnoticed. Coming onto the committee for this year are Anton Beens, Hugh Alexander, Maria Forbes and Jacob McDonald who join the ongoing members, Steve Begg as Vice Commodore, Rowan Gillies Boat Parking/Storage (assisted by Anton), Ken Mann as Secretary, Simon Carter as Treasurer, Dan Forbes on Building and Grounds. Maria will be managing the canteen and clubrooms this year and Betty Kelly is your go to person for caravan/camping at the club under the auspice of Buildings and Grounds, leaving two vacancies to fill. We are submitting an expression of interest to host the Trailersailer Classic Titles in November this year. Another opportunity for us to showcase our wonderful club; let s pray for rain in the meantime. The Taipan association have also expressed interest in Bendigo Yacht Club hosting their titles on Labour Day Weekend, March Michael Anthony (360Utilities) has partnered with Bendigo Yacht Club offering an opening for our members/friends and acquaintances to benefit from a one-off opportunity to install solar power and battery backup without the upfront charges. Michael has offered us a benefit of $250 for each 360Utilities installation when Bendigo Yacht Club is quoted as the referee. To take advantage of this offer refer to the application form later in this newsletter. Australian Sailing Regional Manager, Gavin Wall will be hosting the annual Club Forum/Roadshow on 24 July commencing at 6.30pm. Venue is yet to be finalised but will be in Bendigo due to lack of heating in the evenings in our club rooms. Cairn Curran Sailing Club have been invited to participate in this event. Members are most welcome to attend, please let Ken Mann know by 30 June if you wish to attend. Look forward to seeing you soon. Andrea Mainsheet June, 2018

The club has, unfortunately for the third year running recorded another deficit, this time of $15,847. There was a slight increase in Annual Subscriptions again this year along with increases in virtually all the Income sectors including Race Fees up by 100% which is very encouraging and mainly due to a very successful open event as is the big increase in Canteen Sales Profitability of 2000% which is great and down to the hard work and dedication of the volunteers in making and baking a lot of the food on the premises which increases our profit margins tremendously, so a big thank you to Ms. Forbes and the Canteen Staff. The Sailing School also out performed again on year with numbers and Income up which again is down to the hard work of the volunteers. The only significant decrease in Income was with Sailability which struggle to get out this year although the drop in Income is outset with the equally proportioned expenses So all in all this gave us an increased Income on last year and our best for 3 years. This is encouraging and would indicate that the Club is being used by young and old. Unfortunately its not all good news again this year, whilst the Income is up on last year so are the costs quite dramatically and mainly in the Repairs and Maintenance department. This year included large costs to the upkeep of the buildings with an extraordinary expense of $8,000 for electrical repairs and the Boats and equipment for racing costing us anther $9,000 again this year. Should we not had these expenses we would have turned a Surplus of approximately $3,000 this year. Significant items in this year s accounts compared to last year would be:- Catering Trading Surplus up by $4,000 Race Entry Fees up by nearly $3,000 Boats and Equipment for Racing costs are again high at $9,000 Repairs and Maintenance of Buildings is up $8,000 Repairs and Maintenance of Plant is up $2,000 An increase in the Fixed Assets being:- a. Life Vest - $348 b. Outdoor Kitchen - $2,911 An improved Record Keeping System including online Payments and Registrations. Reserves still remain strong at the club with nearly $100,000 in cash and monies held at the bank and we are still a very viable and asset rich club with Net Assets at $456,455 Finally I would just like to thank Helen Goodall in all the support she has given this year in the bookkeeping and setting up the new systems. It is this assistance that has allowed me to stand for another year. Thank you Helen! Simon Carter, Treasurer Mainsheet June, 2018

Glenn Ashby has recently gained his 17th World Championship title sailing with Team Tilt in the GC32 championships as tactician/ mainsheet trimmer at Riva del Garda Italy. The GC32 is a class of hydrofoiling catamaran 32 feet in length and constructed of carbon fibre and has a crew of 5. An exciting machine. 13 teams raced in the inaugural GC32 championships and some of the best sailors in the world took to the start line. Across 4 days 16 intense races were completed. The boats soared across the water at more than 30 knots. Team Tilt were 11th overall after two races. They then took charge and sealed the first GC32 title on the final day. Not a bad feat for an Aussie boy who learnt to sail in the freakish winds of Eppalock. Mainsheet June, 2018

Then each month: 21 July, 18 August Saturday May 19, 14:05, Wind around 5ks, SSE. 9 Boats, including several from CCSC breached the Club house start, with Shamrock leading UOME in the TS s while the Flying Fifteen from CCSC clearly led the way. Cool to cold conditions varied little for the 60 minutes of the race, whilst the breeze stayed true to direction and speed. Our own young Shari in her Sabre joined the fleet after the start and managed to stay on the water for most of the race (Well Done Shari) until the cold conditions beat her, while among the rest, UOME soon established her dominance over Shamrock, and the CCSC s FF, Finn and Impulse dominated the scene. Highlights of the day were Johnny and Phil demonstrating that a Taser can in fact be sailed backwards, and Steve and Ian theoretically rehearsed their rescue drills aboard Kimbolton. Meanwhile, Rowan had fired up the fire-pit in anticipation of a few cold racers needing to thaw out. All in all, a good time had by all. Chris and Jenny Clarke. Rugged up and ready to go. That s what Winter sailing is all about - chilly weather, competition and companionship. Ian W. Mainsheet June, 2018

The first day of the Winter series saw the Sabre Inspiration arrive at the Club with her new owner. It didn t take long before interest was aroused and Steve Phillis and Jack Carroll were there helping her new owner to rig and offering some valuable tips on Sabre sailing. Inspiration has been around the Club for a while and Rowan Gillies, John Lockie and of course Jack, who won a silver medal in this little boat in a past Masters Games, have been amongst her previous owners. Shari Wray-Henderson is one of the Club s keen and bubbly cadets and has fallen in love with sailing. Inspiration is her first boat and on that wintery day last month she proudly took to the water with a bit more knowledge than she started with. We wish Shari smooth sailing and look forward to watching her improve as she learns the quirks and how to handle this great little boat. Jenny C. Some of our older members may be interested in this. People between the ages 71 and 79 are now eligible for FREE Shingles Injections from the local GP. Minnow 777 Good condition & ready to sail. 11 . Bull Sheet Geelong to Queenscliff Cruise - March 2018 Some weeks prior to this cruise we began watching the weather predictions intently. At first it looked reasonable but as departure day drew nearer we were uncertain as to what we would encounter. It appeared at best we would get two good days and one bad one then, according to the BOM, it would be OK. So as to miss the Timpenny Titles at Portarlington on the weekend, we left Bendigo after lunch on the Sunday and arrived at St Helens (North Geelong) mid afternoon, setup, launched and spent the night on the water in the marina. There were three boats; Warren with his secret weapon, the Macgregor 26 Knot at Work with me as crew, Rob and Judy in the very neat and tidy Sonata 7 Sea Sharp and Brian and Merilyn in the Farr 6000 The Guv ner General which had just been newly renovated and, with Brian s handiwork, was like a luxury motel. Next morning, Monday, we set off at 10am for Portarlington. We made good time and were joined by six dolphins who frolicked amongst the boats. Brian was in the lead; perhaps a dangerous option as he is renowned for losing his way. For many years I d had dreams of owning a Macgregor and I began pestering Warren to sail Knot at Work and see how it performed. Warren, who likes his 50 Hp motor and a bit of speed, was a little reluctant to use the sails at first, however he finally succumbed and we enjoyed a good sail. We approached Portarlington, with it s shallow areas, with care. Each of us at some stage ran foul of the sand bars but managed to free ourselves without too much drama. Entering the new marina we were a little perplexed as to where to go. For us there was only the old fishing fleet pens or alternatively, to anchor. We made the choice of the pens and tied up allowing for the tide. Our next issue was how to get off the boats as with the tide low, we found ourselves 2 metres below the jetty. Eventually we scrambled up a couple of rickety ladders and set forth for the town to stock our supplies and to enjoy a dinner of fish and chips. The next morning we set off for Queenscliff in very light winds. Clearing the harbour we made for the shipping channel, skirting the mussel farms. We rounded Indented Head and then made our way to the octagonal structure of the Chinaman s Hat off St Leonards in the south channel of the bay. There was a slight swell on this leg of our journey with a southerly wind on the nose forcing us to use motors. The wind wasn t the only thing on the nose as we approached the Hat. A colony of seals have made home there, hence, we didn t hang around too long. The trip was uneventful until we attempted to find the creek at Queenscliff. Unless you have been there before the creek and entrance to the marina can be difficult to see and confusion can occur which is just what happened with us. With the Guv ner and Sea Sharp following we finally found it and made our way in. The current was very strong and Warren did a excellent job manoeuvring the big Macgregor into the marina. Mainsheet June, 2018

We found our berths amongst the elite with Knot at Work and Sea Sharp close together amongst the stink boats and The Guv ner snuggled in with the yachts. There were a few anxious moments for Sea Sharp s Skipper when a 3 story 25 metre motor cruiser slipped in next to the Sonata. We went for a walk into town and enjoyed happy hour at a pub and stayed for dinner. There had been warnings all day advising of an approaching front with 50 knot winds predicted. It hit that evening with a vengeance. The Macgregor and Sea Sharp were sheltered to an extent by the large cruiser, but Brian and Merilyn in The Guv ner General spent a very unpleasant night amongst the yachts with the wind howling and listening to the singing and clanging and banging of the shrouds. The next day the wind continued; in fact, if anything, it was worse. There was no venturing out of the marina that day. We wandered around Queenscliff exploring the many sights. The wind began to abate later that afternoon, but the seas were predicted to be very lumpy the next day, so the decision was made to abandon the cruise back to Geelong. The following morning the three Skippers caught a bus back to Geelong and retrieved the cars and trailers and then drove back to Queenscliff where we dropped the masts and then motored under the bridge to the boat ramp, then headed for home. It was a good trip and as always with our cruises, it was interesting and enjoyable. Sailing with Warren gave me the opportunity to get the feel of the Macgregor and to discover that, although it s a great boat, perhaps it s not the boat for me and I thank Warren for his patience with me.
