Some marketing slogans stand the test of time. So when the 2013 Bendigo Trailable Classic rolled around after 15 years sitting quietly on the top shelf, one of the Club s old favourites was bought back to life. This year s event was a great trial run for Sailing Committee and local participants alike with eight boats starting the 26 mile (approximately) course. While six finished, one was lucky to make it back after the Derrinal Ness Monster took a huge bite into his keel. Further details can be sought from Doug Carswell s latest best-seller The day Nessy ate my boat. Well done to Phil and the Sailing Committee, Race Committee, Catering Committee and participants on another great club event. Congratulations to Rowan, Russ and Barry who won the day. Mainsheet October 2013! Page 4

Congratulations also to Phil and the Sailing Committee for another outstanding Ice-Breaker Regatta. With over 60 boats in attendance, there was plenty of exciting racing had by all. Thanks to everyone who helped out over the weekend to make all of our visitors feel welcome, particularly to the Catering Committee and the Race Committee. Thanks to SLAM and Helly Hansen for supplying prizes. The Regatta results are available from the club website. Steve Phillis has done a brilliant job working with Yachting Victoria developing the new club website which has all the information members should need. If there s anything missing or you have any other questions about various aspects of the club, don t hesitate to call the relevant member of the General Committee. We ve also got a Facebook page to share info and photos. Rob Heath has done an exceptional job rostering on a catering team to look after the canteen over the coming season and has put in months of planning and recruiting. A roster has been drawn up, but if you can spare a Saturday or two over the next 6 months, please get in touch with Rob. They also have planned a couple of happy hour events on Saturday 9 November and Saturday 7 December, so make sure you come along to those. Thanks to Bob Cameron and the Constitution sub-committee who developed the new club Constitution, which was unanimously approved by the 50 or so members who attended the recent Special General Meeting on Opening Day. The new Constitution is available from the club website. Thanks also to Col Nankervis, Mick Floyd and Helen Sharrock and the Sailing School for preparing the Pacer purchase proposal that was also voted unanimously in favour at the recent SGM. The club will spend up to $11,000 of its funds towards the purchase of 6 new pacer dinghies with a total cost around $35,000. For more details, to make a donation or to help out with fundraising, please contact Col. Congratulations to Cath Gillies and Sarah Floyd who were selected as Local Heroes in the Women and Girls in Sailing program Yachting Victoria are currently running. Both are very generous contributors to our club and without whom we would find ourselves wanting. Cath is often busy preparing your lunches and Sarah is often busy teaching you, your kids or your grandkids how to sail. Anita Hunter has taken on the role as our local representative for the program. Glenn Ashby s Etihad Team New Zealand had an outstanding America s Cup campaign with the result coming right down to the wire. Congratulations Glenn on another fantastic performance, fingers crossed for the next campaign. As many of you know, Discover Sailing day is Yachting Australia s pre-eminent promotional day where guests can experience sailing free of charge. Bendigo Yacht Club is hosting two Discover Sailing Days this season Sunday 17 November 2013 and Sunday 9 February I d encourage every member to bring a friend to Discover Sailing Day and introduce someone new to the club and to the sport of sailing. It s a great day for a picnic too. Please contact Russell Denholm for more info or to take on a role for the day. The General Committee will host a new members evening on Saturday 7 December. All members are encouraged to join in the Happy Hour from 6pm and BYO BBQ afterwards. Contact Russell Denholm for more info. As you can see, and as you would have heard on Opening Day if you were in attendance, there is plenty going on this season and to ensure the club is strong into the future, we need as many volunteers chipping in around the place as possible. If you can help out in any way, please don t hesitate to sing out. Mainsheet October 2013! Page 5

Cheers Sam Hawkins Commodore From the Tasar Association The Tasar Association of Victoria (TAV) has asked us to promote the Tasar Nationals at Blairgowrie over Christmas from 27 Dec 2013 to 3 Jan Sailors under 21 enter for free, and assistance is provided to access a Tasar if required. More info on the website: ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne The club has received an invitation for members to participate in the ISAF WorldCup Melbourne, 1-8 December 2013, Sandringham Yacht Club, Olympic and Invited Classes sailing event. Website: The Yachtie s Mantra from Ian Wallis Many members are aware that I drive a vintage car. My kids have often asked Dad, what will we do with the Chrysler when you die?. Whilst listening to the radio recently I heard a snatch of a song by James Taylor, and thought the words of the chorus, which follow, seemed to provide the answer: When I die I don t want a coffin, I ve thought about it long and often, Just strap me in behind the wheel, and bury me in my automobile On reflection, this could have a Yachties corollary: When I die I don t want a coffin, I ve thought about it long and often, Just lash me securely to my boat, And then make sure that she won t float Mainsheet October 2013! 7 Racing Rules from the Vice Commodore In this month s copy of Mainsheet I will be covering the basic Port/Starboard rule. Whilst this is the most basic rule in the book it never ceases to astound me how many times it s broken around a race course. There are many reasons for this and amongst them are: The skipper was unaware of any sailing rules; The skipper did not hear the call nor saw the boat with right of way; The skipper with no right of way chose to ignore the call; The skipper with no right of way thought he or she would make the cross; The skipper with right of way gained it by altering course and did not leave the other boat room to keep clear. Some of these reasons might be excusable at times, but others are definitely are not. For those who don't know their rules I would suggest taking some time to download or purchase a rule book as Fundamental Rule 3 reads: ACCEPTANCE OF THE RULES By participating in a race conducted under these racing rules, each competitor and boat owner agrees to be governed by the rules; to accept the penalties imposed and other action taken under the rules, subject to the appeal and review procedures provided in them, as the final determination of any matter arising under the rules; and with respect to any such determination, not to resort to any court of law or tribunal. When most incidents occur it just leads to boat damage however I have been knocked unconscious on two occasions by boats in the wrong, and I know of many incidents where people have been seriously hurt and even worse. Not knowing these rules, and if something serious did happen, the skipper would be found to be not only in the wrong but negligent under Fundamental Rule 3. This could lead a much more grim outcome. The rule book covers racing and not social sailing but I would say that for the basic rules of sailing, such as port and starboard, would also be a factor in any court of law or tribunal if it was found the skipper s ignorance of these basic rules that lead to injury. In many cases where port starboard becomes an issue, the skipper in the wrong is because he or she is concentrating on the tell tails on the sail so much they didn't see the boat coming at them on starboard. In this case it's up to the starboard boat to bring it to their attention by yelling starboard until some recognition of the situation is apparent from the port tack boat. If this fails, remember that avoiding a collision is a lot less costly. Yelling loudly also has benefits for the starboard boat in this situation as if the skipper did not see you, ignores your call or just thinks they will make the cross and doesn't, you will no doubt get the attention of other boats who could witness the situation. In this case they will see that you had to alter course to avoid the collision which should be backed up with a protest call where the port boat would need to complete a penalty. If the penalty is not completed, witnesses would be on hand for the protest hearing. We have many obstacles at Lake Eppalock that we need to avoid such as trees, banks, shallow water. In any case a boat needs to avoid an obstruction by tacking onto port in the path of an Mainsheet October 2013! Page 7

oncoming starboard boat, the port boat must clearly call for water prior to altering direction where the starboard boat must alter course to allow the port boat to cross and avoid the obstruction. Rounding marks is also an exception but this is a topic for another article or two. Finally, and not listed below, is when boats are coming towards each other on the same tack from opposite direction. If both boats were on starboard one would think you both had the right of way but naturally this can't be the case. The ruling here is very simple as it is deemed to be correct that the boat traveling downwind has more manoeuvrability than a boat going upwind. Therefore the ruling is that any yacht sailing closer to the wind has right of way over a boat with the wind behind them. The call usually used here when boats are approaching is "Starboard Upwind Boat. Below is an extract from the ISAF rule book for when boats meet. Whilst these rules are reasonably self explanatory, just remember there are usually general limitations to the rules and the entire rule book must be read, understood and applied holistically. RIGHT OF WAY A boat has right of way over another boat when the other boat is required to keep clear of her. However, some rules in Sections B, C and D limit the actions of a right-of-way boat. 10. ON OPPOSITE TACKS When boats are on opposite tacks, a port-tack boat shall keep clear of a starboard-tack boat. 11. ON THE SAME TACK, OVERLAPPED When boats are on the same tack and overlapped, a windward boat shall keep clear of a leeward boat. 12. ON THE SAME TACK, NOT OVERLAPPED When boats are on the same tack and not overlapped, a boat clear astern shall keep clear of a boat clear ahead. 13. WHILE TACKING After a boat passes head to wind, she shall keep clear of other boats until she is on a close-hauled course. During that time rules 10, 11 and 12 do not apply. If two boats are subject to this rule at the same time, the one on the other s port side or the one astern shall keep clear. Russell Denholm Vice Commodore Mainsheet October 2013! Page 8

From the Catering Coordinator I would like to extend a VERY BIG THANK YOU to all the people who made their time available to assist in the staffing of the canteen during the Ice Breaker Regatta weekend in September. Also to the many people who offered their services and helped with the setting up, putting food out and then cleaning up on Opening Day. The help was greatly appreciated and showed that many hands make light work. Cath Gillies and Judy Heath are still looking for two or three people to be trained to manage the canteen on a rostered basis throughout the season. This will enable these wonderful ladies to have weekends off so that they can take advantage of the benefits of the club and their other commitments outside the club. The training is not arduous. The procedures in the canteen have been well documented and are easy to follow. They are also looking for people who are prepared to come and assist the managers with the making of rolls, taking lunch orders and serving customers. It is a great way to socialise and get to know other club members. Please drop by the canteen and let Judy or Cath know if you can assist in any way. They have a roster available so you can choose when you would like to help. Remember that if you want this service to continue at the club, these ladies will greatly appreciate your commitment to assist in managing and helping in the canteen. A BIG REMINDER to all members PLEASE ORDER YOUR LUNCHES EARLY so that the Canteen can have them ready and waiting for you. We find that there often is a peak time when everyone seems to want their lunch and it can be tricky/stressful trying to serve customers as well as making new lunches at the same time. Prices have remained the same as last season and we are trying to improve our profit by lessening any wastage. So your cooperation with this is greatly appreciated. Happy Hour and BBQ Tea - Sat 9 th Nov and Sat 7 th Dec. The canteen is providing nibbles after racing on Saturday 9 th November and also Saturday 7 th December in order to promote socialising between club members. It is BYO drinks and we also encourage people to bring along salads and meat and stay on for a BBQ tea. So please put these dates on your calendar. Rob Heath Catering Coordinator An interesting read submitted by Bernie Young Perce Harman has published an account of his seventy years of sailing The first part of his book can be read by going to and searching for the author. 10 Discover sailing On Sunday the 17th of November we will be holding our first Discover Sailing Days. This gives all of us a chance to showcase sailing, our club and classes to family, friends and the general public. Yachting Australia and Yachting Victoria will provide much of the publicity for this day including flyers and post cards, which will be distributed around the community, but the best publicity is always word and mouth telling friends and inviting them down for the day. Naturally the focus will be on sailing, but for the kids we will have face painting and the adults we will have a sausage sizzle ticking along throughout the day. To make this day successful we need the people to come along, so please ask your work colleagues, family and friends to come and join us. We also need people to meet and greet people who arrive at our club, register people prior to going out on a yacht and, naturally, members to take guests out on their boats. If you would like to lend a hand on the day please let me know as soon as possible by sending me an rdenholm@bendigotafe.edu.au stating what you would like to do, whether you can bring your boat along and what class this would be. If you don't have access to please call me on this number Thanks in anticipation. Russell Denholm. Adventure anyone? Bernie Young received the following invitation from Tony Mowbray.
