Coeffiient of normal restitution of visous partiles and ooling arxiv:ond-mat/9733v [ond-mat.stat-meh] 8 Nov 997 rate of granular gases Thomas Shwager and Thorsten Pöshel Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Institut für Physik, Invalidenstraße, D-5 Berlin, Germany February, 8 Abstrat We investigate the ooling rate of a gas of inelastially interating partiles. When we assume veloity dependent oeffiients of restitution the material ools down slower than with onstant restitution. This behavior might have large influene to lustering and struture formation proesses. PACS numbers: 83.7.Fn, 6.4.+i, 8.4.Lm, y, 46. +z Typeset using REVTEX
The behavior of granular gases has been of large sientifi interest in reent time. Goldhirsh and Zanetti [] and MNamara and Young [] have shown that a homogeneous granular gas is unstable. After some time one observes dense regions lusters and voids. To evaluate the loss of mehanial energy due to ollisions one introdues the oeffiient of normal restitution where g = g and g = g = ǫg, g, desribing the loss of relative normal veloity g of a pair of olliding partiles after the ollision with respet to the impat veloity g It an be shown that even for three partiles for ertain region of the oeffiient of restitution there exist initial onditions whih lead to a behavior whih is alled inelasti ollapse. This means that the partiles aomplish an infinite number of ollisions in finite time []. The onditions under whih one an observe inelasti ollapse have been studied in one dimensional systems [3] as well as in higher dimension [4]. Reently it was shown numerially that the probability for a ollapse rises signifiantly when the partiles have rotational degree of freedom [5]. In this ase the ollapse is possible for muh larger oeffiients of restitution than for non rotating partiles. Other interesting related results onern bouning ball experiments on vibrating tables where ompliated dynamial behavior is observed e.g. [6]. Reently ompliated, under ertain irumstanes irregular motion of a bouning antilever of an atomi fore mirosope when exited by a transduer was investigated [7]. In the investigations [ 7] the approximation of onstant oeffiient of restitution was assumed. Solving visoelasti equations for spheres urrently it was shown that the oeffiient of normal restitution ǫ is not a onstant but a funtion of the impat veloity ǫ g itself [8,9]. For the ompression ξ = R + R r r of partiles with radii R and R at positions r and r one finds ξ + ρ ξ 3/ + 3 A ξ ξ = ρ = Y R eff 3 m eff ν 3
Y is the Young modulus, ν the Poisson ratio and m eff = m m m + m R eff = R R R + R 4a 4b are the effetive radius and mass of the grains, respetively. A is a material onstant depending on the Young modulus, the visous onstants and the Poisson ratio of the material. Equation was derived under the preondition that the olliding spheres have impat veloity muh less than speed of sound in the partile material. For details see [8]. The initial onditions for solving are ξ = ξ = g. 5a 5b The oeffiient of restitution ǫ of at time t = olliding spherial grains an be found from this equation relating the relative normal veloities g = ξ at time of impat and at time t, when the partiles separate after the ollision, i.e. t is the ollision time: ǫ = ξ t / ξ. 6 The numerial integration of equation 6 yields the oeffiient of restitution as a funtion of the impat veloity see fig. in [8] whih is in good agreement with experimental data []. Constant oeffiient of restitution, however, does not agree with experimental experiene []. Other theoretial work on this topi an be found e.g. in [,3]. Consider a gas of granular partiles at a given initial granular Temperature T. Then the question arises how the temperature dereases with time due to inelasti ollisions. This problem has been investigated earlier [4,5] for the ase of onstant oeffiient of restitution and the result is s. also [6] Tt = T + t/τ. 7 The time sale τ is a material onstant. The temperature deay 7 is the origin of the luster instabilities whih have been investigated reently [,]. 3
The aim of the present paper is to derive an expliite analyti expression for the oeffiient of normal restitution ǫg as a funtion of the impat veloity g. A diret onsequene of this result will be a refined expression for the temperature deay of a granular gas. The duration of ollision t for the undamped problem A = is given by [7]: t = Θ ρ 5g 5. 8 We want to point out here that Θ is a onstant pure number, not depending on any material properties. Hene, t depends only on the material onstant ρ and on the initial veloity g. We use equation 8 to define a resaled dimensionless time Θ: Θ = ρ 5 g 5 t 9 Using the abbreviations v = ρ g α = 3 A a b and a new set of variables Θ = ρ 5 g 5 t = v 5 t a xθ = ρ ξt b we rewrite in the form ẍ + αv 5ẋ x + v 5 x 3 = with ẋ = d x. We see that dθ dx dt = dξ ρ dt = g ρ = v = v dx 5 3 dθ Hene the initial onditions in our new variables x and Θ read x = dx dθ = ẋ = v 4 5 4a 4b 4
Both equations of motion, and beome speial at x = or ξ =, respetively, i.e. all derivatives of third order and higher diverge. This will be shown for the ase of x: Hene d dθ ẍ = d dθ = αv 5 αv 5ẋ x + v 3 5 x lim x ẍ x + ẋ 3 5ẋ x v x 5 d 3 dθ3x = ±. 6 and so are the higher derivatives. Beause of this singularity we must not expand x in powers of Θ. Beause of the initial onditions xθ has the form xθ = v 4 5 Θ + ηθ 7 η =, 8 whih defines the funtion ηθ. Using transformation 7 we find Θ η + η + αv 3 5 Θ η + η + αv Θ + Θ + η =. 9 In 9 our terms Θ.5 and Θ.5, therefore we expand η in powers of Θ η = a k Θ k k= The first oeffiient a vanishes beause of the initial ondition for x. When we require η = a Θ + a +... to be finite at Θ = the seond oeffiient a must vanish as well. With Taylor expansion of + η and + η 3 for small η we arrive at and therefore η = 4 5 αv 5 Θ Θ αv 5 Θ α v 5 Θ
x = v 4 5 Θ 4 5 αv Θ v 4 5 Θ α v 6 5 Θ 4 Rearranging the full series 3 one finds αvθ α3 v 7 5 Θ + 75 v 4 5 Θ x = v 4 5 Θ 4 35 Θ Θ Θ αv 7 Θ α v Θ = v 4 5 x Θ + αvx Θ + α v 6 5 x Θ... 4 v 4 5x is the solution of the undamped elasti ollision s. dashed line in fig.. The full line in fig. shows the damped motion aording to eq. 3. The diret numerial integration of eq. ollapses with the full line. For x Θ where Θ is the duration of the undamped ollision one finds using 4: x = v 4 5 x + αvx + α v 6 5 x +... = v 4 5 B + αvb + α v 6 5 B +..., 5 whih we do not need now but later on. Note that the oeffiients B k are onstants, i.e. they do not depend on v nor on material onstants. Equations and, respetively, hold for the entire ollision. The ollision starts with v and ends with v. For pratial purposes we now define the term inverse ollision. The inverse ollision is a ollision whih starts at time Θ with relative veloity v and ends at time with relative veloity v, i.e. time runs in inverse diretion during the inverse ollision. The equation of motion for x inv, i.e. for a ollision in inverse time follows from. Sine the inverse ollision starts with v we have to replae v by v. Beause of the time reversal we have to hange the sign of time derivatives of odd orders, i.e. ẋ ẋ inv. The equation of motion for the inverse ollision reads 6
ẍ inv α v 5ẋinv x inv + v 5 x inv 3 = 6 A motion due to eq. 6 in normal time would be an aelerated one. However, we shall mention here that eqs. and 6 desribe stritly the same physial motion. The solution x inv of the inverse problem an be derived from the solution of the diret problem replaing α α and v v. x inv Θ = v 4 5 x Θ αv x Θ + α v 6 5 x Θ... 7 Now we determine the ollision time Θ and the final veloity. One diret method to alulate Θ would be to determine the solution of xθ = using Taylor expansion of x in the region lose to Θ. It an be seen easily that this method fails sine all derivatives of d n dθ n x with n 3 diverge for Θ = Θ. Therefore Θ has to be alulated by an indiret methode. The problem will be subdivided into two parts s. fig. : a the motion of the partiles x from Θ = to time Θ m when x approahes its maximum and where ẋ hanges its sign, and b from Θ m to Θ. In ase of undamped motion where α = we have Θ m = Θ /. In part b we do not onsider the ollision itself but the inverse problem in the interval Θ =, Θ m, with Θ m being the time where x inv approahes its maximum. The ontinuity of both parts means x Θ m = x inv Θ m. For finite damping α we write Θ m = Θ / + δ and Θ m = Θ / + δ and remind that Θ = Θ. To get an expression for δ we expand Θ ẋ Θ + δ = = ẋ Θ + δẍ + δ d 3 dθ 3x = v 4 5 +vα +v 6 5 α ẋ ẋ ẋ + δẍ + δẍ + δ + δẍ 7 + δ d 3 dθ 3x + δ d 3 dθ 3x Θ +... Θ +... Θ +... d 3 dθ 3x 9
and using ẋ Θ / = v 4 5 x is the solution of the undamped problem δ = αv 5 ẋ Θ / ẍ Θ / + O α. 3 The expression 3 has to be inserted into the Taylor expansion of x Θ / + δ: Hene x / + δ = v 4 5 x + αv = v 4 5 x x + α v 6 5 x + δẋ + δẋ + αvx x Θ m = v 4 5 x Θ / + αvx Θ / + α v 6 5 Replaing again v v and α α yields + δ ẍ + δ ẍ α v ẋ Θ / ẍ Θ / O α 3. 3 x ẋ Θ / ẍ Θ / δ = αv ẋ Θ / 5 ẍ Θ / + O α 34 x inv Θ m = v 4 5 x Θ / αv x Θ / + α v 6 Θ 5 x ẋ Θ / ẍ Θ / As explained above both solutions 33 and 35 have to be equal. With β = x ẋ Θ / ẍ Θ / 36 we write v 4 Θ 5 x We expand v in α + αvx + α v 6 5 β = v 4 Θ 5 x αv x + α v 6 5 β. 37 v = v + αv + α v +..., 38 and find 8
v 4 Θ 5 Θ x + αvx + α v 6 5 β = v δv 4 5 x αv + δv v v x + α v δv 6 5 β 39 v with δv = αv + α v Writing + δv v n 5 in powers of α and omparing oeffiients yields finally v = v + 5 αv 5 x Θ x α v 5 x x +... = v αv 5 C + α v 5 C +..., 4 with C = 5 x Θ x Θ 4a C = 5 x Θ 4 x Θ. 4b Sine Θ does depend neither on any material properties nor on the impat veloity g or v, respetively, C and C are pure numerial onstants. Evaluating C and C in 4 numerially yields C =.5344 and C = For oeffiient of normal restitution one gets ǫ = v v = αv 5 C + α v 5 C a = C Aρ 5 g 5 + C A ρ 4 5 g b with g being the impat veloity fig 3. For the duration of ollision we find with 3, 35 and 4 Θ t = Θ + δ v δ v 5 = Θ v 5 4 αv x Θ / 5 x Θ / + Oα = Θ v 5 + C αv 5 + Oα = Θ ρ 5 g 5 + C αρ 5 g 5 + Oα. 43 9
Θ = v 5 t = Θ + C αv 5 + Oα 44 To hek the theoretial result eqs. 4 we integrated numerially eq. and reeived the urves ǫv and Θ v. Then we fitted C and C to these data using 4 and 44. For instane for α =.5 we found C num =.5356 and C num =.8439 from the urve ǫv s. eq. 4. The fit of C to Θ v s. eq. 44 gives C num =.534. For other values of α we found very similar numbers. Hene, the numerial results agree with theory. When we use the veloity dependent oeffiient of restitution in the ollision term of Boltzmann equation T dv dv ǫ v v 3 f v f v 45 we get the ooling rate for dissipative gas T T / + t 5 3 τ 46 Our final results eq. 4 shows that for visoelasti olliding smooth bodies the oeffiient of normal restitution is a dereasing funtion with rising impat veloity: ǫ g 5. A diret onsequene is the ooling rate of a granular gas eq. 46: a granular gas onsisting of visoelasti partiles ools down signifiantly slower than a gas of partiles whih ollide with onstant oeffiient of restitution s. eq. 7. Due to our understanding it is neither self-evident whether the lustering observed in granular gases of the latter type, and the extreme ase of this effet, the inelasti ollapse, will hange their overall behavior nor whether they exist at all. These questions should be reonsidered in detail for veloity dependent restitution. The authors are grateful to N. Brilliantov, S. Esipov, H. Herrmann, F. Spahn and W. Young for helpful disussions, and J.-M. Hertzsh for providing relevant literature.
