1 CLYC Cruiser Handicapping in Results of all CLYC cruiser races 1 will be calculated using the RYA s National Handicap for Cruisers (NHC) system, and/or the Carlingford Lough Rating (CLR) system, and for one-off races and regattas, the Current Personal Handicap 2. Unless skippers are briefed otherwise prior to a race or regatta 3 or unless a boat has opted to use her Spinnaker rating (ie whitesail only), sail configurations to be used are unrestricted; that is, gennakers or spinnakers are allowed 4. National Handicap for Cruisers (RYA): 2. NHC will be used for Early, Mid, Late and All Seasons and Thursday and October series, which exclude other one-off races and regattas. The 2018 starting values as agreed by the Cruiser Committee can be found in Table Boats which have already started in an NHC series will retain their current handicap status, regardless of the number of subsequent new entrants to the series. Any newly entered boats which have not previously competed with the current fleet will start on base handicaps. Handicaps are however automatically re-aligned and this may affect all boats. 4. Boats joining an NHC series will attain their proper handicap levels after a few races, and these are often significantly different from the base numbers. Base numbers are intended to be a starting point only. 5. If, unusually, handicapping in a regatta uses NHC, starting NHC values will depend on whether there is a significant number 5 of new boats which have not previously competed with the current fleet. If there is, all boats will start on their NHC base values. In such a case, a boat s handicap will change throughout the event but her finishing handicap will not affect her current NHC club handicap which remains as it was after the last club race. 6. Parallel series (eg Thursday Series) NHCs will start with current values and progress throughout the series, independently of values in the simultaneous series (eg Mid or Late Season). Whatever the starting values, by definition NHC handicaps change after every race, unless there are fewer than three finishers in a race. 7. The NHC calculation of results must run only on RYA approved software, currently the only choice of which is either HAL s Race Results/HalSail or Sailwave. Each boat s starting NHC value for 2018 is the same as her finishing value at the end of Figure 1 shows the steps taken by the Cruiser Committee to assign a starting NHC value to a boat. Carlingford Lough Rating (CLYC): 11.The Carlingford Lough Rating system was introduced in 2015 to calculate results using fixed handicaps for races or regattas when results are required on the same day as the last race, because it is not feasible to have NHC results calculated in the short time between racing and prize giving. In 2018, CLR will be the primary result for one-off races or regattas. A summary of the assigned 2018 CLR values is given in Table The CLR system is no longer derived from historical NHC averages depending on boat and crew performance, but related to boat data only. CLR values will be reviewed and possibly revised after each Season. 13.Assigned CLR numbers may be appealed by a skipper, well in advance of an event by providing evidence to the Cruiser Committee. Revisions will not be back-dated. 14.A skipper may opt to use a Spinnaker rating, in which case this will apply for the remainder of the year. Subsequent use of a spinnaker or gennaker would then disqualify that boat. 15.Figure 2 shows the sequence of steps taken by the Cruiser Committee in assigning CLR values. 16.All this information is subject to revision by the Cruiser Committee. 1 CLYC cruiser races include all races where the Organising Authority is CLYC 2 One-off races and regattas use Current Personal Handicap, which is the current NHC value, fixed throughout the event. 3 A regatta is defined here as a named event consisting of more than one race 4 NHC handicaps are independent of sail configuration used.
