January 2016 Commodore s Cups Well, prize giving is over and I hope those who attended all had a good time. Let s see if next year we can get some new names on the trophies. The sailing programme is being revised to make it less complicated and ensure people can complete a series thus standing a chance of winning. Bill and Stuart are working with Laurence on that, the sea sailing needs to be attractive to all participants. The staggered racing starts at the pond for the winter series are working and hopefully we can transfer some ideas onto the sea next year so the cadets and slower fleet feel more involved with events. Thanks to Alan and Bett for the winter series pictures, much appreciated. The Christmas party went well, Shannon providing the live music and Julian being Father Christmas a good time had by all. Nobody volunteered to run the bar so it was many hands to the pumps, thanks to all who helped out. Mainsheet and the publishing of the sailing results are now being done by Richard, he is also having a look at the website. So now all we need is a few more volunteers to take on roles next year. At the moment we need another Rear Commodore Seaford to look after the buildings and equipment, Roger was doing it while he was about but he and Kathy are back in Spain now. So if you want to get involved get in touch. We have some new Oppies, two are at the pond now and another seven will arrive in the new year, they are new to us but in great condition. The club has a number of wooden boats available to buy, they are at the pond and in a variety of conditions. They will be getting advertised on Ebay or similar so again if you are looking for a boat let a committee person or Director know and we'll sort one out for you.

The interviews for the new Galley operators have been held and agreed, so we have some new faces and a different approach to look forward to in We have met with the front of house staff and again stressed the importance of family friendly and member based operation and pricing. At this stage a member discount of 20% is what we are looking at, there will be more information in the next Mainsheet. Ian Johnson Commodore. In this edition of Mainsheet: Ian s bits and pieces Pictures from Boxing Day A shocking story from the club-house Bill Hudson s diary Catz Chat 2015 hall of fame Pictures from Prize Giving Training brochure for 2016 Did you know that.. The race series scoring system rewards participation as well as excellence. If you had just started all the Freeman Iceberg series races at the pond but had to retire in all your races you d still have ended-up up in about 11th position out of 53. So just think what you could achieve if you finished them all!

Memberships in 2015 I am pleased to say that memberships in 2015 have increased again, the analysis is below. A big thanks to all those involved in recruiting and administering memberships and Dutyman. There is a lot of work being done in the background by Gilly, Michael and Terry, well done all. Year Family Sailing Single Sailing Family Social Single Social Cadet Life Student Honorary TOTAL The 42 cadet memberships have 28 adult memberships at a minimum of social, this has proved a successful membership category ensuring more cadet sailors at a realistic membership rate. Minions??? The organisation and planning of social events and functions doesn't happen by accident. So attendance and participation is needed to make the time and effort worth while. We try our best to let everyone know what is going on, posters, bulletins, calendar, Facebook and Twitter yet still hear "I didn't know about it". So on behalf of us minions who take the time to organise events please support our efforts. Wearing A Killcord Back awhile a RIB driver was returning in the dark to base up the Hamble. There was a lot of shipping around creating big waves with their wake. The RIB unexpectedly hit a big wave and the driver was thrown overboard. His position in the busy channel was very precarious and he had to swim hard to avoid being run down by passing ships. The first sign that anything was amiss was when the RIB was found in a car park with the engine still running - this is when the lifeboat was called. Fortunately the RIB skipper was soon found. When asked about a kill cord (which had been found in place on the RIB) the skipper swore that he had been wearing it around his wrist. With cold, wet hands it is easy for the killcord to slip over the hand. So ever after the RYA has recommended that killcords be attached around a leg or positively on to a lifejacket. This photo has been cut down to protect the identity of the safety boat driver but it is pretty clear that the loop of killcord has only the weakest grip on his/ her wrist and would easily slip off. FIX THE KILLCORD FIRMLY AROUND YOUR LEG OR ON TO A BELT OR LOOP ON YOUR BUOYANCY AID OR LIFEJACKET.

Freeman Iceberg and Icicle Prize Presentation Boxing Day 2015 Here are a few pictures from the prize giving ceremony for the Freeman series held at the pond on Boxing Day And here are some Boxing Day knockouts...

Wednesday 16th December I had arranged to help Simon get the Hartley trial boats ready to go back, Terry had kindly also offered to help. We were due to head for the pond at At 8.30 Alan O rang me, he was at the Seaford Clubhouse, we had an intermittent fault on some sockets which he had looked at yesterday. Today when Steve arrived the fuse had tripped and wouldn't reset. Alan had had a look and needed access to the bar so called me, I cycled down and we checked the sockets. We seemed to have an idea where the problem could possibly be. Terry picked me up and we spent 3 hours cleaning the Hartleys and getting them loaded, with Simon and Dan, thanks all. There seem to be 3 sail bags missing, anyone got any ideas where they may be? Terry and I went back to Seaford and met up with Alan, the problem wasn't located and Alan kindly decided to sort it rather than go to another job. So he and I set about lifting floorboards and testing wires to isolate the problem. Trevor Q then arrived with Moira to see if he could help, he took Moira back home and picked up some more tools and the three of us cracked on. Then Simon S arrived from the pond by which time we had large areas of floorboard up but had the problem down to a section of cable under the patio doors. We relaid a section of cable not without some difficulty and when we pulled through the old cable found the source of the short, the live cable was exposed and with all the wet weather had probably been arcing with a steel beam. By the time we had replaced all the floorboards, sockets and tidied up it was 6pm. Many thanks to you all for your efforts and seeing the job through. I was opening the bar so stayed till 7pm then cycled back home, an 11 hour day I didn't expect. This club doesn't run itself, behind the scenes there are a lot of people doing their bit, above and beyond what can reasonably be expected from volunteers. A lot of the time what they do is not seen, if you went into the clubhouse tonight you would never know how much work had been done today. Ian

Bill s Blog Just to let the club know what I ve been up to in my winter training, so far. I have had two weekends with the South East Zone Squad at Island Barn and Grafham Water. I have also had one residential weekend with the 4.2 National Squad at Rutland Water. Parents are sent away and we train, race and do feedback sessions on all the areas together. We then sleepover in dorms at the club. The coaches are excellent. Charlotte Bonella is a former National Topper Champion and she is Head Coach for both squads. We have sailed in some testing conditions that have varied from no wind and freezing to screaming downwind and having a great time in gusts of 35! Each weekend we focus on a few topics. Last week at Grafham Water, for example, we spent Saturday working on roll tacking, gybing and keeping flat in big winds. On Sunday we focused entirely on starts. I think I am getting better. The work is hard; 9am until 8pm on one residential day, lots of 5.30 am starts from Brighton for Dad and I as well as homework. But I m having lots of fun! The training will continue until May then the competitions start. Bill Hudson

December 2015 CATZ CHAT (AUTHOR 1919) Remember last month.. Americas Cup in Seaford bay Saturday 28 th Nov OK, got your attention.big plans for the final race in 2015, but the weather once again was against us, 25 knots and building, so decision taken earlier in the week, but a number of the Cat sailors still turned up and with assistance from Chris Turner (electrical), we removed the winch to the shed for its annual overhaul. Everybody helped each other and the Cats were taken apart for the winter and repairs, just hope we remember where everything fits next year! Good news is that everyone thought the planned event was a great idea, so we are looking to try and hold next year, perhaps on a Saturday in April, so watch this space. So what have we been doing, well repairs and more repairs to the hulls, I had 3 separate significant repairs to make, so after plenty of Resin and fibreglass followed by the White gel (to cover everything) we are ready for 2016 season. Other Cat sailors will be following me into the shed. Pond here we come I know some of the more established amongst you will be horrified, but there is now a Dart 15 berthed at the pond, no we will not be joining the winter series yet..it is an experiment to see if it works, I have already been told by many that it will not, but that is what change is all about, great if it works, but if not, at least we have tried. Hopefully some pics will be ready for the next Jan 2016 edition.

Recorders Notes The weather for the winter series at Piddinghoe has so far been fairly wet and windy. As a result, two races were cancelled. The Freeman Series started well but was soon followed by some wet and gusty weather which inevitably reduced the number of sailors taking part. Nevertheless, we still had some good turnouts and often the weather was not as bad as forecast so we still had some surprisingly good races. 53 boats entered the series which is a record number. The three Streakers dominated the series, taking the top three spots overall. Amongst the twenty or so Lasers who took part, David Murley s Radial, Penelope Duncan s Radial and Jamie Smith s Laser 4.7. were the leading contenders, coming into the last race, for the Laser prize. It was good to see Andy Rychlinski back in his standard Laser after being absent for so many years. The cadets had some good turnouts with Jamie Smith s 4.7 Laser, Natasha Stonestreet s Topper and Toby Wride s Topper in close competition for the Icicle Trophy. The last race on Boxing Day was windy and gusty. The course was set with some very fast reaches. All boats capsized at some point during the race but most went on to finish what turned out to be a very exhilarating race. Rupert dominated the race with only one capsize and took first place, next was Matt Springall who after capsizing on the first lap went on to take second place. In the meantime Alice Smith sailed well in her Topper taking 3 rd place with David Murley in 4 th. David was also the first of the Lasers and took the Laser winter series prize. Jamie Smith battled on despite many capsizes to finish 8 th which meant he finished 2 nd overall in the Laser class and won the cadet Icicle trophy. The final and overall results for the Freeman Iceberg were:- 1 st (Streaker) 2 nd Rupert Smith (Streaker) 3 rd Alan Simmons (Streaker) 4 th David Murley (Radial) 5 th Michael Veale & Mike Rosier (RS 200) 6 th Louise Currell (Byte C11) Laser fleet results:- 1 st David Murley (Radial) 2 nd Jamie Smith (4.7) 3 rd Penelope Duncan (Radial) 4 th Bill Wates (Laser) Cadet results for the Icicle Trophy were:- 1 st Jamie Smith (Laser 4.7) 2 nd Natasha Stonestreet (Topper) 3 rd Toby Wride (Topper) 4 th James Cuxson (Laser Radial) For a full set of results go to the club s website and click on Sailing then club series races then Freeman Iceberg 2015 for overall results, and Cadet Winter Series 2015 for cadet Icicle Trophy results. For some excellent race reports and photos go to our club website then on the right-hand side click on useful sites then Streaker Ramblings.(courtesy of Alan and Bett Simmons).

The next race is on New Year s day starting with a race at 2pm. Then on 3 rd January we start the Elford Numbum Series for the hardiest of sailors. As the fleets tend to be smaller in this series all boats including cadets will start at 11am except for the Oppies which will start 5 minutes before the others at 10:55 am. Happy New Year everyone and have a great sailing season in Laurence. Dinghy Show 5 th - 6 th March 2016 We are hoping to organise a coach trip to the show at Alexandra Palace on Saturday 5 th March. Anyone interested in going would you let me know (laurence.venus@lineone.net) so we can find out well in advance if we have sufficient numbers for a coach or if not can arrange car sharing. Sailwave and racing results Laurence, the club recorder, does an excellent job of checking and compiling the results and statistics for us. I have installed a desktop PC in the office complete with Sailwave software and the last few years results, there is also a working printer. If anyone feels motivated to set us up so we can try entering directly onto a PC then we can also put a laptop in the race box, network with the desktop and printer and perhaps produce printed results on the day. This is perhaps something that could be done over winter, tested, practiced then tried in parallel at the start of next season. I know in other clubs they enter races directly onto a PC or laptop so perhaps it is time we gave it a try, any volunteers? Need some welding done on your trailer? We have a member, Keith, who can help. So let me know and I will put you in touch He has the equipment, you may need to pay for a bit of pipe, angle iron or box section. Cheers Ian

Any spare gear?? Sometimes we have people crewing on the safety/rescue boats who may not have all the gear a lot of us have who sail on the sea regularly. At the pond we have a few sets of waterproof trousers and jackets, not substantial but better than nothing. It has been suggested that we get a small amount of kit together which we can make available if conditions require. We already have a few spare buoyancy aids, sometimes things are left at home or aren t where you thought they were. So with that in mind have you any old or unwanted sailing gear, any size, any condition? What we will do is stencil NSSC all over the gear and sort out maybe 3 or 4 size bands, it will never be perfect but better than nothing. We will keep the gear in the changing rooms and the Race Officer or Helms can ensure those participating have suitable attire on or with them. I usually have a variety of clothing in a bag and drop it with my sandwiches, on Ark. All contributions gratefully received, they can be dropped off on a club night or day when the office can be opened. If you mark as a donation so we don t think it s lost property. HOLIDAY HOME TO LET IN THE SAILING MECCA OF DEVON, SALCOMBE! Ideally located at the entry to the town, this semi-detached house gives you ample parking outside for two cars or one car and a boat, two double rooms and a single, bathroom, open-plan kitchen and sunny garden. The house affords wonderful views across the Devon countryside and the dog friendly, sand beach of North Sands is only 10 minutes walk; likewise the bustling town centre of Salcombe with its shops, pubs and restaurants. Wonderful sailing, kayaking and walking in this outstandingly beautiful part of the country. Rental available at a discount to NSSC members of 10% off published tariffs.
