1 GBBC NEWSLETTER April/May/June 2018 geilstonbayboatclub.com.au Issue No. 23 SUNDAY RAFFLES Doing nothing on a Sunday afternoon! Why not come along to the club which will be open from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm. Every drink purchased comes with a raffle ticket Every 1/2 hour there will be a draw for a chicken or box of chocolates or something similar. Commodore s Report We have some good news. Before the recent election an application was submitted to the Liberal Party and if they got back in they would grant GBBC $20k towards our next development i.e. boat storage cages adjacent to the creek. This frees us up to get on with other projects like improve the foyer entrance. We greatly appreciate the support of Jacquie Petrusma MHA in acquiring the grant. We are trying to address the poor race sailing entries, as we need to continue this important on water activity. If anyone has any ideas of how we can increase numbers please let me know. Sundays 4 to 6pm we have commenced with a Sunday chook draw and put a sign up next to walkway advertising bar hours. Hopefully this will attract new people to the club. Our Wednesday and Friday night meals are going well but it would be good to see more along on a Friday night enjoying what the menu offers. Unfortunately I could not make the Presentation Night but I would like to congratulate all the prizewinners and extend a big thank you to our sponsors. Indeed all members contribute to the club in their own way and that support is greatly appreciated. Regards John Brierley AROUND THE CLUB NEW MEMBERS Club welcomes the following new Members: February: Steven Gangell. March: Leisa Baker & Donna Schofield. April: Terry Martin, Silas Piotrowski, Rod McKenna, Peter Farley, Bernard Perriman, Sonia Scott & Allana Wilson. WINTER SPECIAL SMALL SLIP $50 HAULOUT AND $10 PER DAY Strategic Planning Projects Update Boat Cage Project: This project to construct six boat cages on sites is proceeding well with approval having been received from Crown Land Services. A Development Application has now been lodged with the Clarence City Council and the State Government has provided a grant that will by and large fund the project. 1

2 NOTICE TO THOSE USING THE SLIP While on the slip members must stick to council machinery hours for power tools Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm. Saturday 9am to 6pm. Sunday 10am to 6pm. SLIP OPERATORS NEEDED The Club has always attempted to run its slip yard with a team of volunteers. For more information or trial run please see Rod [ ] or Keith [ ] who will welcome your inquiry. On the Slips NEW CAR PARK To offset the space for the proposed boat cages the unused space to the east of the club has been designated as an overflow car park. Members are requested to keep the entrance clear at all times. DAD S ARMY SOLDIER ON Youth looking good after it s recent haul out. Youth has an interesting history having sailed around the world three times including sailing up the Amazon River. Sergeant Major John and the troops have been busy doing a lot of essential small jobs in and around the clubhouse. They have also repaired the wailings on the club jetty. Peter hoses off Laurie Dean 2

3 Sound Signals sailors are likely to hear on the river: Ø One short blast - I am altering my course to starboard. Ø Two short blasts - I am altering my course to port. Ø Three short blast - My engines are going astern. Ø Five short blasts - Whenever a power-driven vessel is to keep her course, is in sight of another vessel and is in doubt whether sufficient action is being taken by the other vessel to avert a collision, she may indicate such doubt by giving at least five short and rapid blasts. 6d Comes to Grief Last week 6d broke from its mooring and was washed up on Lime Kiln Point. Fortunately it was spotted soon after from the Crow s Nest and salvage action was set in motion with club sponsor TMC coming to the rescue. Luckily there was no damage but it should prove as a reminder to all that it is a requirement to check your moorings at least every two years. When did you last check yours????? Weather Pointers - Local Forecasting When seabirds fly out early and far to seaward. When sea birds remain over land or fly inland. Dew and fog forming inland at night. Fair weather and light or moderate winds. Stormy weather. Fine weather; neither dew or fog form under an overcast sky, or when there is much wind. 3

4 GBBC Presentation Night - 21 April 18 About 50 members and friends attended the recent Presentation Night. The Club Patron Don Mitchell opened proceedings and it was pleasing that some of our sponsors attended. Their support is greatly appreciated by the Club and it is hoped that members will acknowledge this by supporting them in turn. To make the night more eventful next year consideration will be given to inviting some one of note in the maritime/sailing world along as a guest speaker. 7 ON THE WATER Racing is now restricted to the Boat Sales Long Distance races the first of which was conducted on 15 April. Only three boats took part in this race with others no doubt opting out due to the adverse weather forecast. Horizons was first over the line with Tara second and winning on handicap. Kruza also took part but unfortunately did not finish. Crew of Patience in action 4 March Race on 6 May saw four boats Bahloo, Black Magic, Kruza (pictured opposite) and Tara - take part in a race to BYC1 and back to G. Once again the weather tested boats and crew with frequent wind gusts exceeding 30 knots. All had difficulty rounding BYC1. Black Magic took line honours with Kruza winning on handicap from Tara, Bahloo and Black Magic Next races are scheduled for 3 June, 1 July and 5 August MESSAGES FROM MAST This is an important safety message. Could you please highlight to all members. We have received the latest stats from AMSA regarding EPIRB & PLB registration in Tasmania for It is concerning that EPIRB and PLB registrations in Tasmania with AMSA have dropped 31.85% since Can you please ensure to remind anyone purchasing an EPIRB or PLB that it is a legislative requirement that it is registered with AMSA, this simple task may save a life and chances of a rescue occurring quicker will improve dramatically. It is encouraging however to see that the % of GPS enabled devices has increased. Peter Hopkins General Manager - Recreational Boating Safety & Facilities MARINE AND SAFETY TASMANIA 7
