wind speed (knots) wind direction (degrees) A Runaway Winner Race 23 (16 Mar 2016) With a breeze that averaged 14 knots from the south- east, flat seas and a warm sunny afternoon this was yet another great afternoon for yachting. Thirty-five yachts both started and finished the 6 leg, 9.8 nautical mile Course 61, selected for the 5 th time this series. The first three yachts across the finish line recorded podium finishes for the first time. A record-winning margin was created when the Beneteau 367 MY WAY (Magdy Iskander) crossed the finish line 6 minutes 6 seconds ahead of her closest rival. Meanwhile WHITE NOISE (Daniel Edwards) became the 14 th different winner of Start of the Day, Whilst ESPRIT (Garry Anderson) recorded the fastest elapsed time for the 6 th consecutive race. However, it wasn t a particularly good result for JOHNNY B. GOODE (John Chipp) and FOGGY DEW (Joe O Grady), who are 1 st and 2 nd in the aggregate, but they still retain their respective positions. Race 23 Wind Speed & Direction Wind Speed Gusts Wind Direction time

Before this race the average finish position for MY WAY was about 26 th so this win by the widest margin of the series was something of a surprise. MY WAY started 20 seconds late for a 26-minute handicap and led the fleet at the first rounding of number 4. She held this position and increased her lead during the remaining 3 legs of the race to cross the finish line at 15:44:13. MY WAY recorded the 13 th fastest elapsed time of the race sailing the entire course in 1:48:13. This was the 11 th race she has completed and her first podium finish. MY WAY moved up one place in the aggregate to be in 42 nd place. Not only did MY WAY record her first podium finish of the series but so did the Oceanis 43 WHITE POINTER (Tom Raft). This was her 12 th race this series and she started 20 seconds late for her 29-minute handicap from 12 th place. WHITE POINTER sailed the first three legs of the course in 74 minutes and rounded number 4 for the first time in 5 th place. She improved her position in the final three legs of the race to finish in 2 nd place at 15:50:19. WHITE POINTER sailed the entire course in 1:51:19 and this 2 nd place lifted her form 36 th to 32 nd in the aggregate. This was also the first podium finish for PUBLIC BAR (Clive Sondheim) in 15 completed races. She started 32 seconds late for a 42-minute handicap from 26 th place. She was already in 11 th place at the first rounding of number 4 and after sailing for 1:39:34 she crossed the finish line at 15:51:34. PUBLIC BAR had sailed the course in the 7 th fastest elapsed time of the race and finished 1 minute 15 seconds behind WHITE POINTER and 1 minute 39 seconds ahead of ESPRIT. PUBLIC BAR moved to 28 th place in the aggregate up from 32 nd the previous week.

The entire fleet were away to a good start without any yachts starting too soon. Only 3 of the 35 were more than 60 seconds late for their handicap and the median start time was 20 seconds. WHITE NOISE won Start of the Day only 2 seconds late for her 42-minute handicap. 6 MARK MASTERING MATTERS Top ten fastest sailing craft How fast is it? It's a question sailors hate to answer, because it usually comes out as an apology. "She'll cruise at 6 knots" doesn't exactly cause gasps among the non-sailors. More than once, some landlubber has spat back "I can run faster than that!" To which the proper reply, should you be faced with such a tactless rube, is "Great! Race you to Australia." Intro to Yacht Pals Boating & Sailing news. Read about the top ten fastest yachts (2008) CLICK Advice from a level 2 coach at SYC for next season How to sail FAST After consulting an SYC level 2 sailing coach the following 12 tips are offered to help improve your sailing. Mark would welcome any additions. Send to MARK WINDWARD Start on time. Insx, one of the WW best starters advises that all you need is a good stopwatch. Check the amount of time you were late and subtract it from your finish time and see how many places you lost. Do not spend too much effort blanketing other yachts. This can take you off course. Don t approach the gybe mark at too acute an angle Don t harden up too quickly when rounding a mark. Don t overstate marks - this just gives away time. Check that the jib sheets are tied tightly. Having them come undone or having crossed sheets etc. costs time. Check before you start. Do at least two tacks. Adjust your sail shape for downwind i.e. letting out the outhaul and Cunningham eye, and possibly the backstay. Avoid over winding winches Over winding winches by putting an extra turn on them increases the chance of an over wind. Get the inside position. Gain the inside position at marks, and avoid having to go the long way around, which usually means getting heaps of bad wind. Keep your boat in clean air. Avoid used or dirty air from other yachts. The lighter the breeze the greater the effect of wind shadows will be from other yachts. Don t squeeze too high, particularly straight after tacking. Let the speed build up. Don t prepare to gybe too early. It can cause your jib to back wind or drop your speed if you ease off sails too early. Do prepare for a gybe. A sudden gybe is dangerous and can drop speed while you gain control. For larger and newer yachts do not press the anchor button instead of the winch button. It can happen. Don t bump into other yachts. This seems to be a too common event now on Wednesdays and it definitely does slow you down. Don t sail into areas where there in no wind. Watch the surface of the water carefully and keep an eye on the yachts in front or to windward More Tips thanks to Anonam a Mouse: Good breeze, good seas, good yacht, good sails, good crew, good luck. Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. Minimise weight, maximise sail. Keep an eye on Esprit (she s the fastest yacht on Wednesday). Take less time to sail further. Read books on the topic. Know your yacht. Keep a close watch on the breeze and trim the sails accordingly.

OTHER MUTTERS. When asked what advice the last race s winning yacht could give, while they were celebrating one of the crew said, get a new Skipper. They all agreed, and said Mark could quote their advice. Rob Sill is showing off his neat scar and is planning to be on INSX next week. Overhead was a discussion about using a new sail. The chances of using it increase now that Rob is back, and INSX is sitting in fourth place in the series just 11 points off first with a 15 th & 11 th to drop. Mark hopes the handicapper will be advised of any changes. Mentioning Hope, Jacquie is now at Eden, moored on the Sth side. I think that is the wood chip side. (Sat 19 th ) Note that the results of this race did not help all the top five series holders - Johnny B Goode 62.5, Foggy Dew 67.5, or INSX 74, but did assist Cassandra 70.5 and Esprit 82. Race Photos of Wednesday Wonders yachts taken by Andrew Lynch are available from Sue Bowes in the Boating Department (not the front desk). Take a USB memory stick with you for Sue to copy onto. A plea for yachts in trouble having to head out again to get into their pen. Please give some warning and space to yachts coming into their pens. They will not expect to see you coming out. Some of the readers of Mark Windward will realize there are close liaisons between the Media in Melbourne. If you were listening to Red Symons, he gave away the answer to the previous Race question with his discussion of nautical terms and the use of the word SNUG. Sometimes, early in a race you know that the peloton is going to catch you, particularly when the wind drops out causing you to lose about 3 mins, plus a slow first leg of under 4 knts. The peloton arrives to take over the lead you have held for half the race. Question 23 Look at the following photos. Can you name of crew and which yacht they below to?

What are the odds for Second Nature finishing 3 rd in the series? It is a possibility. She has a 22 and a 20 to drop. If she won the next two races that would give her 68 points which would give her third place. Just in case Paul needs some motivation, with a 6 th this race and just 3:30mins behind second, he only needs a small percentage increase. Did this yacht make it around Number 4? Fun and Games, on only about her third appearance this summer finished in the top half of this race just 5mins off second. Andrew has sent me about 80 photos from Race 23. We will investigate to see if there is a way to have them displayed on the web site. Thanks to Windward Buoy for his statistics. Someone thought he was mean, but he is just average (a static Ian s joke) Please send your tips, tops and topics to Mark Windward
