2 The wind speed story for Race 8 Classic 2016 Winter Series tightly wrapped up. Race 8 provided the Classic Fleet with conditions that put thoughts of those two abandoned series races to bed. With the series aggregate still wide open it was full on for some pursuit start based racing drama. Frances, Mercedes III, Martini, Avian were in with a chance but needed to race hard against the Classic fleet to keep their chances alive. The Classic fleet group start times were developed for a 95 minute average on course across the fleet. A collaborative effort between David Leroy, RYCV Race Director, using the Top Yacht system and your Handicapper tweaking the Top Yacht group start times. Chris Havre had Akuna first off with an on time 10:30am start followed by Tony Willmott on the helm of our H28, Huia. Loama, all trimmed up with a couple of slabs, had her customary on the money start to keep ahead an every sail up Renene with Kent Bacon on the helm. Next came Bungoona with her two visitors to experience Classic Yacht racing for the first time. Julie and Richard Beaumont. After a short interval Cyan started, full of intent to give the fleet a racing lesson. Then came Martini and up went her kite. 3 Serifa was next with the Tumlaren Avian following a minute later. Being one of the four in contention for best on aggregate. Roger Dundas had his crew of Mal Botterill and Pete Jerabek all g d up and full of that great elixer known as concentration. An elixer that most of us need now and then. 3 more Tumlarens followed in order of Zephyr, Etrick and then Sirocco with Wendy Darley as the press ganged crew. Marie Louise III had to run down the 20 metre start line to avoid an early start but all was well. After an at speed boat hook fish out by Ferdy Darley of the Sirocco s wayward heirloom from Dave Allen, Bob Kerley s spinnaker bag, Marie Louise III trimmed her sails for a fast reach to the first mark Trim started next and quickly popped her spinnaker soon after to chase down Marie Louise III. However a car carrying steamer didn t help with these plans. After a seven minute interval Frances started with an immediate spinnaker hoist to keep at least one minute ahead of Mercedes III. Both on equal series aggregate points. Mercedes III Was next with a slower spinnaker hoist then Frances. This showed up with the mark rounding time interval. In the meanwhile Kingurra was pressing forward with the intent to eat them both up. 1 st Mark rounding, RMYS C Mark After rounding the first mark, tactics for the beat up to R$ had to be decided. Those who made their way over to the Port Melbourne shore for a then on starboard approach to R4 were the winners here. Watching the waters where the chasing fleet were the sun allowed the wind shifts and flaws to be seen. Not so for the Classic racing through the area. Frances and then Kingurra went on an early starboard tack. By now this tack was known to be losing tack when watching the distance increase between Ettrick who crossed tacks with Marie Louise III sometime earlier. At the R4 Mark Approaching the R4 Mark much port and starboard action set the scene between many of the Classic Fleet as the pursuit start time gap between the fleet was being reduced. Mercedes had significantly reduced her Mercedes III held on to take out time on Frances at her rounding of R4. Frances and Zephyr approaching R4 Sirocco and Renene on the run to RMYS D Mark

5 Cyan all bedded down on the run to RMYS D Mark Loama, well trimmed with all weight forward was hard at work to keep Marie Louise III at bay for a long time

6 Race 8 Track for Martioni August 21 Some more race 8 comments Martini was giving it all on with her shy run to RMYS Mark D with multiple roundups. Multiple boat action between Frances, Marie Louise III and Serifa at the RMYS Mark D Gybe. A description of this is at the end of the report. Merecedes III continued to gain on Frances till her kite was dropped well before the D Mark Martini led the fleet around the RMYS Mark G to start her tight reach to the finish line. But with France not far behind she was soon over taken. Serifa did a magnificent ands successful shoot for the G Mark. Avian was closing in until Mercedes III caught her. Marie Louise figured she had a chance to catch Martini when Martini fell in to a short lived hole. Not so. Big BBQ thanks to Cyan. 7 A short description of Classic Yacht racing on Port Phillip The above photo, from Marie Louise III, shows Frances approaching the RMYS D Mark during Sundays race, in her quest to lead the Race 8 Classic Fleet home. The much enlarged and distorted photo shows Frances at top speed with a rarely seen breaking stern wave in the 15 knot wind and flat water conditions. After taking a losing tack on the first beat from RMYS C Mark to R4 her skipper,. Christian Boillot, called for fast and crisp fore deck work knowing they had to keep pushing to chase Martini down and to keep ahead of a fast closing Mercedes III, also under kite. Frances held her spinnaker till the last moment while approaching RMYS D Mark. The spinnaker tack was released,the spinnaker was dropped and gathered in pronto by the trimming crew, the spinnaker pole was dropped and stowed and headsail sheets prepared for a clear run on the gybe rounding. All in fast and crisp order, top marks to the Frances fore deck. With a deep cut under Marie Louise III, Frances gybed cleanly and came up to RMYS D Mark with no space between her and the mark. Sad to say but Marie Louise III also made a tight rounding and was pointing higher than Frances. Frances, under speed,stuck her bow to windward of Marie Louise III momentarily then dropped back to bear away and take a long dig and tack to the RMYS G mark. Much to the delight of Martini who led the fleet at the RMYS G Mark.
