CYAA 2016 Winter Series Race 6 July Winter Series Race 6 Results and Aggregate Status July The Race 6 results along with the series aggregate and ML III Consistency trophy status are available on the CYAA Web site home page. A 7.00am decision Go! We ll call the race off if the Port Phillip Sunday 5:00am time forecast for 30 knot winds changes to an earlier hour was the decision after the Saturday evening, race 6 on or off discussion between the Handicapper and the RMYS Race Director, Alistair Hart. At 7:00am the official decision was Let s Race. Out went the 53 SMS s to give certainity, the race was on, to all participants particularly those who drive long distances for the Sunday race and to Phil Atkins who brings Trim up from Samdringham. The SMS also contained a note about the RMYS Two Hander race starting at 11:00am. Back came the response from Roger Dundas and Gordon Tait who were in the Sunday morning sunshine somewhere off Mooloolaba with Mark Chew on Fair Winds. All 3 aiming to relax in the balmy ozone of Bundaberg s primary product. New skippers to be tested With the skippers of Avian and Ettrick somewhere on the Sunshine Coast and Mercedes III recovering from his Cowes experiences we had 3 new skippers to be introduced to classic Yacht racing. Dave Brodziak was on Ettrick s helm with his crew being his dad John who travelled from Perth for the race. Avian had Duncan Rae a Diamond skipper and Mercedes III had Wake in fright. Roger Dundas and Gordon Tait on Fair Winds off Mooloolaba. Sunday morning Race 6 Classic Fleet of 16 starters beginning to assemble off the RMYS Control Tower on the St, Kilda Breakwater

The Classic Fleet assembles From about 10:10am the Classic Fleet numbers grew. Trim had arrived from Sandringham. The Tum fleet presence was noticable, 6 of them, all set to Race. The sight of the day was to see Huia running hard to make the start time, the Classic Fleet of 16 were ready to go. Three of the 6 Tums. Sirocco, Snow Goose and Ettrick Snow Goose and Cyan Martini, Marie Louise III and Zephyr Avian and Akuna Frances and Avian Warringa All photos by Richard Downey, Ex skipper of Ettrick

The Classic Fleet Race 6 on their way to the Top Mark Course 2 assigned for Race 6 To work in with the RMYS two handed race, Course 2 was assigned by the RMYS Race Director. Course 2 was to be a tight beat beat along Beaconsfield Parade to the RMYS Mark G then a gybe run to Mark F then a hard beat home into a 25 knot Northerly breeze. No problems said the Classic Fleet. This is what we re here for. To be sure though, the RMYS Rescue Boat William Paterson was all set to mother the fleet. The RYCV Rescue Boat Thorsen with RYCV Race Director David Leroy was also on the water with the Classic Fleet at short notice. Gybe-O The on the button start. On the button starts were seen by Mercedes III and Avian. A recall signal went to Charlie Salter Sirocco who was on her way back to the start for an all clear start after a forward recognoitor. Martini s track around Race 6 Course 2 Across the Classic fleet, as the page one images shows, there were many Classics closly following these two fleet leaders. Avian and Sirocco kept pace with Trim while Serifa and Dingo were well up with the fleet. Frances and Marie Louise III worked hard to make the top mark in one tack.

Rounding the Top Mark. Frances had to pinch to make the top mark. The cost to lose her cover on Mercedes III. Marie Louise III had to give way to many starboard tackers such as Avian and Serifa while rounding Mark G. Cyan was not far behind Marie Louise III. On the gybe run With the breeze building many classics opted for a pole out run. Several Tums and Serifa went for the kite. With the tight handicaps it s racing decisions like these that make the difference with corrected time results. Mercedes III crew did a headsail change on the run to prepare for the hard after mark rounding beat to the finish line. Again another payoff with the corrected time results. Much too busy on Marie Louise III for the handicapper to take note on what else was happening arouind the fleet on this run. All across the fleet no drama gybes were being. One Classic, Akuna made the mark F with no gybes after lots of heading up into the wind. Chris Havre knew Akuna was paying him back for all the work put into her to allow this hard racing with no problems to happen. The beat to the finish. Watching the Tumlarens take on the 25 knot mild slop conditions was a sight. This was what they were designed for. Down at the front end Mercedes III with reduced sail for no leeway made the finish line in one tack to take out Race 6 line honors. Frances chased her hard. Starboard calls on this beat were frequent as the fleet as the Classic fleet tacked their way to the finish line. Close across the line battles such as the dead heat between Serifa and Sirocco and the Tumlarens Zephyr and Snow Goose finishing with 3 seconds between were some of the across the fleet features of race 6. Corrected time results Below are the time of day across the finish line details and the corrected time placings. The corrected time results show how hard work or small mistakes affect placing. No doubt that handicapper of yours will be busy once again to come up with adjustments to hopefully make the corrected time results tighter for Race 7 Line honors congratulations to the Mercedes III crew which was made up George Fischer and Michael Rhodes with some of their Boambillee crew plus Mercedes III regulars while Martin Ryan was racing at the Cowes UK Classic Yacht regatta. Congratulations go to Michael McTavish for his helming performance and his crew spinakker work performance that bought Serifa home to be first on corrected time in the 25 knot conditions. Congratulation go across the fleet for the way our fleet raced in the conditions that were at top of the limit for Classic yacht racing After race reports from all boats revealed another day of great classic Yacht Racing. A special report was received from Hui and how she handled the conditions slowly but with no problems. Next Race Race 7 August 7 at Hobsons Bay Yacht Club. 5 Some general CYAA News Panerai Cowes Classic Yacht UK Regatta Attached is the latest and final report from Cowes UK by Mike Daddo. The results performance from all three Classic skippered and crewed by CYAA/.CYANZ members indicate lots of hard work in between race work to bring these chartered boats up to being competive with local boats and crews. Reports from Martin Ryan indicate to participation of the CYAA and CYANZ members has put Classic Yacht racing in austyralia and New Zealand on the international Classic Yacht racing map. More will be heard of this when the many eventful Cowes Regatta stories are retold. Conversations with Bob Munro. To begin with there s no such thing as a conversation with Bob, skipper of Tandanya. Your on the receiving end of another valuable history lesson. Bob still kicking goals in his 89 th year. He will admit that working in drying kapok cages in their matress manufacturing business or filing lead filler in thie car repair business of mixing blue asbestos with epoxies in his boat building years may have contributed to a bit of lung scaring. Perhaps his many years of athletics competitions where he mixed with all the names of Australian national and Olympic administration are still paying off. Back to todays sailing. Discussion about the Cowes Regatta results led Bob to recount how the top International 8 metre of the Regatta, Saskia, came to Australia. A well known international company wanted to give aparting gift to their CEO. After finding out the CEO s dream gift, out came Saskia from the UK. How about that. Incidently the other top International 8 metre at the Regatta was Erica J. Another peice of Austyralia Classic Yacht heritage gone. Bob with Roger Dundas on the RYCV Marina Lot s more stories from Bob. His mens shed is now in Abbottsford after departing from Munro s corner at the Victoria Market. RGYS Festival of Sails, Date change. Recently a note was received from the RGYC informing that FoS will begin with the Williamstown to Geelong passage race on Saturday 21st January.

Regatta News The Cup Regatta Oct 28 - Nov 1 After being exposed to the way the Cowes Classic Yacht REgatta was conducted, no doubt some format changes to our Cup Regatta will happen. Tumlaren Regatta conducted for the CYAA by the RMYS. After workling with RMYS Race administration a date has been selected to conduct a Tumlaren Championship Regatta. The selected date is March 26 and March 27. RMYS are reactivating their showcase Tumlaren trophy that has pride of place in the RMYS bar room. The Regatta race and social programme is still to be decided, but their will be consideration for a Classic division to be on the water with this historic occasion. RMYS will be conducting a special Category 7 division trophy race programme within the Regatta as well..

Melbourne Docklands Regatta The Association has been approached by the give this Melbourne Regatta support. It s to happen on Auguat 28,
