1 Ocean Racing Club of Victoria July 2010 Melbourne to Vanuatu 2010 ORCV s second race to Vanuatu is over. Congratulations to all who completed the race, commiserations to those who, for various reasons, had to pull out before the finish. Of 11 entrants, 10 made it to the start line and 3 retired enroute. Angus Fletcher s Tevake ll took Line Honours in just over 10 days for the 1885 nm course. Angus was the only skipper who chose to go north of New Caledonia, but it didn t quite give them hoped-for advantage over Turbo (Bill Feore) who crossed the line just under a day later to win both IRC and Performance classes on handicap. Right: Tevake ll approaches the Shortland Bluff mark before turning left for Port Vila Published by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria Inc A E Street Address Unit 27, 91 Moreland Street Footscray VIC 3011 Tel: Fax Mobile orcv@orcv.org.au Web Site: Ingénue (David James & Rosie Colahan) sailing 2- Handed, were the first withdrawal when they suffered an irretrievable spinnaker wrap 50 nm north east of Eden. They returned to Eden where they managed to untangle the mess in daylight and flat water but elected to retire from the race. 4 days after the start Scarlet Runner (Robert Date) was comfortably inside the previous record time, set by Andrew Short Marine in 2006, when total electrical failure forced them to retire. An efficient search process ensured that everyone was aware of their problems within a very short time and they diverted to Southport. Mirrabooka (David Bingham) was about 70 nm south east of Noumea when they suffered chain plate damage and so retired to Noumea for repairs. Once repairs are made they intend to go on to Port Vila to cruise Vanuatu. The remainder of the fleet arrived in Port Vila over the next few days, Slinky Malinky (Eric Marsh) - a Northshore 370, the smallest boat in the fleet - arriving on Sunday 18th, just on 14 days from the start, having been frustrated by light winds over the last 200 nm. 2 Page 2 July 2010 Coming Events with ORCV ORCV Winter Series Melbourne s original Winter Series; 3 races down, 3 to go, plus the Melbourne to Geelong Heat 7. If you ve missed the first races you can still participate in the remainder on a casual entry basis. There s even a mini series comprising the longer Race 4 (Sunday August 15th) plus the Melbourne to Geelong Race on Saturday September 11th, or of course the option of just the longer passage race to Geelong. The Geelong Race will also include Cruising Divisions, both spinnaker and nonspinnaker. Check out the entry form on the website and choose your Division. Don t forget, if you re already competing in the Winter Series you must provide some additional information for Race 7. Go to the Winter Series Online Entry Section on the website. Vanuatu to Mackay Once the fleet arrived in Vanuatu they all decided to go cruising! Consequently this race will not go ahead, although half the fleet will end up in Mackay in their own good time. ORCV Annual General Meeting and Presentation Night The ORCV AGM and Presentation Night will be held at RMYS on Thursday 23 rd September 2010 commencing 7pm. Melbourne to Stanley You should have started your planning by now for the first offshore race of the 2010/2011 season. Nice and early this year: Saturday of Cup Weekend is October 30th. You ll need this race as a qualifier for the Melbourne to Hobart (East or West) or the Sydney to Hobart. (Unless, of course, you competed in the Vanuatu Race) Melbourne Latitude Race Saturday November 20th. A short offshore race out the Heads and back in one day. Keep an eye on the website for times and further details. Melbourne to Launceston Race 2010 As a result of improved VHF coverage in Bass Strait, the ORCV Sailing Committee is giving consideration to allowing a proportion of the fleet in the 2010 Launceston Race to enter without fitting HF radio. Any boat without HF will be required to have demonstrated a satisfactory VHF signal and must carry a satphone. ORCV can advise on the hire of satphone equipment. Please contact the office if you are interested in entering this race.

3 July 2010 Page 3 How s the Winter Series been going? Bit of a contrast between Day 1 and Day 2! A drifter for the first heat on July 4th, while the second and third heats on the 18th reminded us why it s called a Winter Series. Cold, with northerlies 20 to 25, a bit of rain! Wicked - far right - winner of Div 1 IRC and AMS in Heat 1 on a day when the wind didn t get much above 7 knots. ( The Race Committee hoped to get a second race in on the day but there just wasn t enough wind) Wicked followed up with a 5th and another 1st in IRC on the windy second race day to share IRC series lead with Calm (a 4th, 1st and a 2nd so far). Goldfinger -right -leads Div 1 PHS with two 1sts and a 7th to date. As always, Extasea is not far behind in all Div 1 classes with worst result a 5th. In Division 2, Insx -below -overall winner of the 2009 Winter Series is looking good once again, but Hush and Alibi are not too far back. All Winter Series results to date, plus John Curnow s comments and Steb Fisher pictures are on the website, check them out. ORCV Office and Race Administration Tanya Stanford has now joined Sally Williams in the ORCV office. A member at RYCV and owner of Nouannie, a Scampi 30, Tanya brings extensive sailing experience to the position. Welcome Tanya.

Latitude Seminar Preparation for offshore racing; particularly focused on participation in the Latitude Race on November 20th Date to be confirmed, but call ORCV on now to record your interest. 5 Page 5 July 2010 New Advertising and Sponsorship opportunities with ORCV During the 2 weeks of the Melbourne to Vanuatu Race there were 5000 unique visitors to Not bad for a race with 10 yachts and 60 sailors! Sponsorship and advertising opportunities can vary from short term ads on the website, up to naming rights for major ocean races, we re happy to discuss options to suit your requirements.
