Congratulations to the skippers and crew who flew the flag for Maylands Yacht Club in the Mirror Worlds on Sydney Harbour at the start of the 2019 year. Conditions ranged from light to fresh, to a southerly buster. Updated provisional results show that out of 59 starters after nine races, our MYC trio stuck together! Rolna Stoeger and Doug Pianta finished 46th with a best finish of 24 th, Duke and Glenn Secco finished 47 th (best 30 th ) and Paul and Hannah Cornwell came in at 48 th (best 24 th ). 7 Southerly Buster

8 KABOOM! Sydney amped up the show on Day 4 with a full blown Southerly Buster sweeping in after a stifling hot morning. The cool change was heralded by a 30 knot gust recorded at the airport, and it arrived at the club shortly before racing was due to start. This brought grins to some faces and nervous looks to others. There was a half hour delay as the RO waited to see what would happen, then the AP went down and boats were released. There were some epic examples of sailing skill, none more so than 12 year old Duke Secco, who helmed Crescendo to complete the first race and record a result. The Full Story My name is Duke Secco and I am 12 years old and the skipper of CRESCENDO. The Mirror Worlds recently ended and I was the youngest

9 skipper there, as all the other younger sailors were crewing. In a Mirror you sail with someone else and my father was my crew. It was my first Mirror Worlds/Nationals so I was tested in numerous ways, and that s not even mentioning the fact I had never been on Sydney Harbour before, so I must admit it was a little daunting. It was great to have fellow MYC sailors Doug and Rolna from 2 PUDD and Paul and Hannah from BLACK ADDER at the Worlds. On the very first few days (of the Nationals) there were strong winds and rough seas so we found it quite hard to climb up the rankings. Many boats ended up retiring in the harsh conditions, though we did not retire once. However, after the initial blow the wind died down to around 15 knots, where we shine as a lighter boat. We were coming 10th to 7th last, and although that may not sound good to you I have only sailed for three seasons. At the Nationals presentation I was awarded the Youth Achievement award and Doug and Rolna were awarded the Most Enthusiastic Sailors award. After that, the Nationals flew by and soon the Worlds were upon us. This was a whole new ball game, 60 boats from around the world on the water so there were a lot of protests on the start line. On the first few days we were not doing that well and toward the back of the fleet. But on the next few days we had a startling realisation and started to follow some of the boats that were performing better and we shot straight up the ladder, we were coming middle of the fleet with dozens of boats behind us. On the second last day it started off as a very hot 38 degrees day, but the wind had other ideas. A southerly buster ripped through the bay at 30 knots, flipping boats and breaking masts. 60 boats entered the harbour, 26 boats started the second race. We only just missed the time limit on the first race because we capsized. On the final day we got off to a strong start, coming at 40th although then we dropped to 50th but we sharply rose to 36th. We came 34th in the nationals (overall) and 47th in the Worlds. In our class of gaffe rig, we came 4th out of 7th in the Nationals, and 4th out of 10th in the Worlds.

10 From this experience I learnt how to: 1) Sail in choppy seas. 2) Survive a southerly buster. 3) Trim sails much better, and much more. 12 STOP PRESS In other exciting news, Trevor Rabey has a numbered sail... as seen at the recent RPYC Mini Series. We are not sure whose number it really is, but at least our race box will be able to identify him at last... Jonas Grandinger, please take note.

13 RPYC MINI SERIES RESULTS - 2ND & 3RD

14 FEBRUARY A number of members competed in this regatta over the weekend in Laser Full Rig, Laser Radial, Sabres and Mirrors. The Mirror Class Association of WA conducted their State Championships in conjunction with the Regatta. A wide range of conditions were experienced from strong southerlies on Saturday to shifty easterlies on Sunday. See link below for results: / Coming Up Sunday 10th February We look forward to seeing everyone back at the club this Sunday for the resumption of afternoon racing - Championship Heat 5 and Consistency Heat 16.
