Because we missed some races due to flooding the next two races are
Championship races - tomorrow and on April 9th. There will also be two additional informal race days after Easter for attendees. Depending on numbers, there will be a single rabbit start for all boats and a course will be set on the day to account for expected light winds. Come down to the club if the weather is good on Sunday 23rd and Sunday 30th April, for a normal 2pm start time. Bring your own food and drinks. City of Bayswater Regatta This was a huge success for the club, with 35 boats out on the water. Photos and a full results list appears elsewhere in this newsletter, and a link to the club Facebook page to see spectacular video footage taken by drone! (Ed - See next section below). Many thanks to those who helped out on the day, including Paul (sausage sizzle), Rob and Reza (support boat), Anne and Lynda (start box), Julian (drone), Rob and Trevor (sailing briefing, and in particular to Rob for the format of the start). Thanks also to the City of Bayswater for their sponsorship. Winter Racing The winter racing season starts in May, and takes place on the first Sunday of each month at 1pm. The winds in winter can tend to be lighter, so the winter races are a great opportunity for novice sailors to gain confidence and race experience. AGM I often get asked by members "how can I get my photo onto the Committee board". Here's your chance! The AGM will be held at 12:30 on 9th April at the clubhouse. Racing can proceed once the meeting is completed. The committee is responsible for organising the club races, program and events. Without the efforts of the committee there would be no racing! All of the committee members are volunteers. I have been fortunate in to have a hard working and dedicated committee and I thank them all for their time and efforts.
The AGM is where we elect the new committee. I encourage you all to consider nominating. In particular I know that we will have vacancies for Secretary and Vice-Commodore and Sailing Captain. Please contact me if you want more information ( ). Club Wind-Up This will be held on Saturday 6th May at 6:30pm. This will be a buffet dinner and drinks. We have a "TryBooking" site set up to book and pay for meals. The wind-up is a chance to find out the results of the summer races, to present trophies and to present certificates to participants in the Learn to Sail program. It's the main social event for the club and I urge you all to attend. Here is the link at TryBooking for the windup so members can buy a ticket in advance and this will give us a better gauge of numbers beforehand for catering purposes. Please book early! Steve Rose Commodore City of Bayswater Regatta Wrap Up Thanks to all sailors from MYC and visiting clubs who supported this event. A special mention needs to be made of Perth Dinghy Sailing Club who were represented by 6 Sabres, the most Sabres from any single club - and their boats were leading for most of the day - see race report under "Sabres" below. East Fremantle Yacht Club and the WA Sabre Association have also been solid supporters of our Maylands Sabre fleet. Congratulations to Ray Martin, first Sabre and first to finish overall. Congratulations to the other Fleet placegetters: Sabre: 1. Jam (R Martin, MYC); 2. C3 (C Holyday, MYC); 3. Dark Horse (G Davies, PDSC).
Laser Full Rigs: 1. Tupperware Boat (J Bolleter); 2. Cheeky Shiraz (S Fox); 3. Fang (S Blanchard). Laser Radials: 1. Ayoopdook (A Benn); 2. Include (B Jackson); 3. LWS (L Mack). Mirror: 1. The Duke (M Secco); 2. 2Pudd (R & D Stoeger); 3. Sailing Centre (M. Foster). Hartley TS16: 1. Redback (T Gaunt Snr). 10 Bella Humm and crew With the end of the 2016/17 training season being just two weeks away it is time to reflect on what has been a very satisfying season. We had very good attendance until the summer school holidays. In the New Year our numbers declined, but those returning continued to show the strong sense of fun and involvement as well as sound sailing ability. It was wonderful to see the participation in the Short Course Racing (such as it was until the elements forced everyone off the water) and in the Bayswater City Regatta. Last Sunday, with the south westerly wind whipping up whitecaps across the river at 9.00am, we knew we were in for a day of
challenges. We made an early decision to avoid the maelstrom being stirred up from Bunbury Bridge to the Club marker and that avoidance was the best policy. Upriver was the place to be. With water skiing being most unlikely we set out for the Maylands Launching Ramp, close to home for a couple of the group. The wind became much lighter as we progressed towards Race Course Marker but getting to this point saw one casualty with Duke and Mimi Secco having a swim. Once we turned into the Ski Area we faced conditions much the same as those we had hoped to avoid, yet the group of four Mirrors and one Laser (sailed by Tyler Goodchild) all managed very well indeed. Tyler has skills now that would help him become very competitive in afternoon sailing. Let s hope he can do this next season. Morgan and her father Craig East were sailing with just the mainsail so their tacking ability was compromised but the whole group reached the Launching Ramp quicker than we had anticipated. The Taylor sisters, Ksenia and Anna, Warwick Jones and son Cameron were the other sailors.
Craig and Morgan
Ksenia and Anna The return trip meant tacking into a stiff breeze until the bend in the river that allowed a fast reach to Race Course and then another fast reach to the Club. The wind was strong enough for all Mirrors to reach hull speed, Morgan and Craig easily keeping up despite their lack of a jib. Les and Bob both assisted in the Support Boat. Les had the task of chief photographer. He managed to get a few good shots of the sailors but the camera stopped working after he had turned the lens in my direction! He was very kind by saying the battery was flat. Following our return to shore Alan Benn was called upon to use his knowledge of the Rules to explain the rules as they relate to rounding marks as well as reviewing port/starboard and windward/leeward. From the interaction that came from members involved in afternoon racing we need more of such sessions. Many thanks Alan! Coming up is the Prize Night. We would like to see as many of the Training Group as possible attending

All the fleets gathering before the recent City of Bayswater Regatta Sabres
The Sabre fleet has been growing steadily at Maylands this season. We lost Raj (Tiwi) to an interstate transfer prior to Xmas - although his boat, Tiwi, has been kept in WA, being purchased by Rob Dipiazzi of PDSC at the eleventh hour! Welcome to Barry Newell who picked up a very good timber Sabre, number 1417, last weekend and will now be giving Steve Rose some hurry up in the older timber boats brigade. We have gained two fleet leading sailors this season in Ray Martin and Terry Gaunt Jnr. Both have excellent timber boats, at or near minimum weight, and both know how to keep them moving at all times. Bruce Lee and Chris Holyday now have to fight for the final podium place most weeks. The Sabres now sail the longer Laser courses and enjoy seeing how much they can beat the Lasers home over a full length race! The Lasers are now finding they are unable to peg back the leading Sabres when they give them 5 minutes head start in lighter winds as the Sabres will continue to start with the Mirrors to
even out boat numbers on the start line. As reported above, Maylands boats enjoyed great success at the recent City of Bayswater Regatta - Sabres had the largest fleet on the day - 12 Sabres competing with many visitors from PDSC and an EFYC boat. Maylands skippers, Ray Martin (Jam) and Chris Holyday (C3) headed all fleets home. We were lucky to enjoy local knowledge in coming from behind two PDSC boats, Gavin Davies (Dark Horse) and Clayton Erwin (Unfinished Business), up the final work, by heading for more southerly breeze to the right side of the course. As an indication of the friendly racing amongst all clubs sailing Sabres, the writer was even given some sail tuning tips during the race by Clayton Erwin who himself had every chance of winning right up to the final legs of the race. And C3 was carrying one of Clayton's older sails! C3 Lasers There was a small but willing fleet of Full Rigs at the City of Bayswater Regatta
and the top three were in close order for much of the race. Julian Bolleter held off Steve Fox, who had earlier squeezed past Scott Blanchard. On a picture perfect day, it was great to see such solid representation from the various fleets. However, the extraordinarily generous handicapping of the Sabres needs to be reviewed!! Cheeky Shiraz Alan Benn (Ayoopdook) leads Les Mack (LWS) across the start line Five laser radials faced the starter at the City of Bayswater Regatta with Alan Benn in Ayoopdook being the first boat home. For those wondering what happened to Jerome Toonen, see the Hartley fleet report below. Mirrors
The big M - the red horde strikes again at the City of Bayswater Regatta with 9 Mirrors at the fall of the 12 minute signal. Well done to all the sailors who have progressed the Mirror class in summer sailing season.this was a real highlight of the summer. Bella and Ayeisha,Glen and Mimi, Doug and Rolna all experienced the highs and lows of competitive sailing over the different formats of this season.the competition between all the boats was keen at times but all competitors showing great sportsmanship and a willingness to trade ideas that make a Mirror more competitive on the water. Turbo was a loss to the class this year but the training group is producing some keen sailors in Anna her sister Ksenia Morgan and her father, Duke, Ash and father. It would be great if these teams can race in the upcoming winter series to prepare for next summer. Events to look forward to:
Walpole 2018 Nationals Hobart 2017 Nationals and World championships Sydney Maylands !! From the jellyfish watcher. Hartleys
The Hartleys took on an extra crew for the City of Bayswater Regatta. Sabre Association President Brian Jones joined Brian Plumb and John Gaunt aboard Kurdi Magic... see footage:
Our club patron Stephen Smith also went out for a sail with Greg Gaunt and Andrew Carter on Welsh Dragon. With poor river quality and stormy weather days, the Hartleys have missed a lot of races this season. Terry and Pam visiting New Zealand until Easter will see one boat put away for the summer, maybe the Hartleys will reconsider our winter series policy. Mike Wilcox who joined the fleet for every second Sunday, was unfortunate - the planets have only lined up for two good races for him. It was obliging of Mike to take an extra day to entertain guests on the water for the City of Bayswater regatta, thanks also to Jerome and Ken for making a fourth boat available for the day. We believe the guests had a good time, though a couple became unwell believing it was more likely the sausage sizzle than sea sickness. Andrew too is much appreciated for his help keeping our small fleet afloat through the season, as is Jeffery. Redback Ed - We have obtained a picture of a rarely seen Hartley that tends to only appear for cruising purposes - it was great to see this "fourth Hartley" at the City of Bayswater Regatta... the skipper is usually seen at the head of the Laser Radial fleet. She sure looks more comfortable than your Laser Jerome Toonen!
Reminders - Busy April - Upcoming Calendar of Events Some important dates for your diaries : 1. The final two Club Championship heats are to be run this Sunday, 2nd April and Sunday 9th April - good luck to all competitors. 2. The MYC AGM will be held immediately after the last morning Learn to
Sail session at on the 9th April, prior to the afternoon racing - open to all club members to attend. 3. Informal racing for attendees will be held on the last two Sundays in April - come along for some final summer season sailing if the weather holds out. 4. Our season end celebratory dinner will be held on Saturday the 6th May at 6.30pm. All sailors and their families are invited. Certificates for the Learn to Sail trainees will be awarded, along with other general club participants awards. This is always a fun night, with entertainment for the kids and a super cheap bar for the adults. 5. The first Winter race day will be held on Sunday 7th May at 1pm - NOTE THE EARLIER START TIME and bring your own food and drink - the bar is closed. This is the day immediately after the Presentation night and we also need busy bee volunteers to attend to help with the removal of our permanent marks. Mug of the Day The latest Mug winner has often held the pewter ware with great distinction. His latest mug winning effort was relatively simple - he was seen waving frantically from the shore to the support boat - trying to communicate by hand signals
perhaps? Then someone noticed he was also holding the 2 way radio. Were the batteries flat? Was it broken? Seems not - besides switching it on, it helps to TURN UP THE VOLUME BUTTON! Well done Trevor! Trevor Rabey wins again - we may have to put up a new award at the end of season wind up dinner - most mugs won?
