The building was dismantled and re-erected at the Maylands site after World War II. Members had a sentimental attachment to the old building as all of the work had been completed by themselves over a period of two years. However, sentiment finally gave way to practicality and it was recognized that a new clubhouse was needed. The strongest advocate for a new clubhouse was Wally Gaunt (past Commodore, past Patron and Life Member of the Club). Two Pieces of Good Fortune Early discussions covered firstly the type of building required and secondly the joint funding of the project. Members at the time were content to build a second building, using corrugated iron and timber, which was in line with the affordability envisaged at the time. Fortunately for the club the council insisted on brick construction. In hindsight the Club recognizes the wisdom of this decision. The club was also fortunate that 1971 was the centennial year of the City of Stirling council and the official opening of a substantial Local Government project was deemed necessary to mark the unique occasion. Planning Tendering and Building The plans prepared by Mr Neil Wood included an undercroft for boat storage, a large hall, galley, canteen, office, and generous ablution facilities. B and T Constructions were the successful tender at a price tag of $74,000. Mr Joe Tavelli (the supervising builder) said the building was trouble free. However sensible precautions were taken due to the nature of the site and proximity to the river. The builder elected to use thicker than standard diameter re-enforced concrete pilings and the piles were driven to refusal point. Load bearing beams were placed on top of the piles and therefore the clubhouse is com-

2 MYC History: Before the New Clubhouse (Continued) pletely independent of any soil conditions. In other words Pretty safe. We were very fortunate in having Mr Joe Tavelli (a builder of vast experience) as supervising builder. Club members contributed to a small extent by building the large number of security gates surrounding the undercroft. Over 13% of the Clubhouse was paid for by Members Although the clubhouse was to be owned by the City of Stirling and Leased by MYC, the Club contributed $10,000 of the $74,000 price tag. That is over 13% of the total cost. Of this amount, $3,000 had been raised by the club over 20 years through jaffle stalls, games nights and raffles. All of this entailed a lot of hard work and dedication by Club Members. The remaining $7,000 was acquired through a bank loan and debentures offered by the Yacht Club to its members. The Opening An inaugural regatta was held on the 4th of Feburary 1971, to commemorate the clubhouse opening and was a huge success. A total of 130 boats (including boats from most clubs on the river) ensured a spectacular sight for all members and guests. The presentation of trophies commenced at 5pm and took longer than usual because of the number of competing fleets. The Ambience A dance (a popular form of entertainment in those days ) followed the presentations. It was only then that members started coming to terms with the natural ambience of their new clubhouse. The Architect Mr Neil Wood, who was present at the dance was quite mesmerized by the scene of so many people enjoying themselves in such a beautiful setting, enhanced by the lit up clubhouse with colourful reflections on the river surface. Today Today the ambience of the clubhouse has not diminished. Members enjoy a drink or two after sailing, with one of the best views in Perth as a backdrop. The stunning view of the Swan River has also made the clubhouse a popular venue for weddings, parties and other functions. As the Clubhouse is currently undergoing alterations to provide disabled access, its popularity as a hire venue can only increase. Cause To Celebrate MYC members have much cause to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of its clubhouse. Good decisions were made by people with vision and forsight, both in the MYC Comittee and in the City of Stirling Council. Architect Neil Wood and Builder Mr Joe Tavelli both did outstanding work. And Finally, the club was also graced with a dedicated and hard working membership who gave up their free time to tirelessly raise funds for a dream that some said would never become a reality. By Max Moore (Past Commodore and Life Member) and Daniel Hugo (Mudlark Editor) Commodore s Report Practice Day 2nd October The MYC Opening day is just around the corner (October 9th) but don't forget that this year we a trialling a pre season practice day the weekend before (October 2nd). Let us know whether you think it is worth while. Improved Access You may have noticed the hive of activity at the front if the Club House. The new disable lift and ramp have been installed. The other day the bricklayers were busy at their trade and I must say it is all starting to look good. The ramp, lift and self-opening doors have given the club entrance a much needed facelift. The New MYC Committee This year has seen some changes in our committee. After many years of diligent service as RC Sailing,, John Wallace has handed over the position to Robert Herman and has taken the position of Vice Commodore. Trevor Rabey has stepped into the position of Sailing Captain which was vacated by Robert Herman. We wish these fine individuals all the best in their new roles. They know that they will have our full support. New Committee Member A warm welcome to Wendy Pelterd. Wendy has been with the club for many years as our hall hire coordinator. This year she joined the MYC Committee as a Committee Member and has already made a significant contribution. Junior Members have a Say Matthew and Jack Clark-Massera are junior members who have been sailing for many years. They have been invited to committee meetings to provide the views of younger members. Their contribution is greatly appreciated The Mandurah Train Trip Recently a train trip to Mandurah and the Australian Sailing Museum was superbly organized by Jerome Toonen. Thank you Jerome for organizing yet another successful social event for club members. An article on page 5 provides all the details. The Roster System Our new RC Sailing (Robert Hermans) has highlighted the importance of our club s roster system to the effective running of the summer sailing program. Please give the roster system your full support and remember: If you are unable to do your rostered duty, it is your responsibly to get somebody to do it for you. Possible Change to Speed limit on Club Water s I recently had a meeting with the Swan

River Trust and the Department of Transport. One item discussed was a 5 knot zone upstream from Windan Bridge. At the moment they are in the process of drafting a proposal to be tabled at Parliament.

The good news is that the other day the club received a delivery of a couple of street directional signs. One is being placed at the roundabout on Peninsular Road and East Street.

Photos taken by Sally Gaunt 04/09/11 Classical Guitar Orchestra Perform at MYC On Sunday 26 June 2011 MYC members, family and friends were entertained by a performance of the WA Classical Guitar Orchestra at the MYC Club House. The orchestra played a range of classical guitar music including works from Bach, Dvorak, Handel, Charlton, Svoboda and others. The program also included a guitar duet and solo performance by members of the orchestra. Over 70 people attended the performance. The event also served as a fund raiser with a total of $500 collected from door sales. As agreed the profits from this venture were shared equally between the MYC and the WA Classical Guitar Society. The orchestra members enjoyed performing at the Club and said that they would be more than happy to conduct another performance at the Club next year. Maylands Yacht Club Members visit to the Australian Sailing Museum A group of 14 MYC members, their families and friends had a great day in Mandurah on Sunday 21st August 2011.

After a short shuttle bus trip from Mandurah station, we arrived at the Australian Sailing Museum where Rolly Tasker himself was there to greet us.

Rolly gave us an interesting background to the formation of the museum and escorted us on a personal tour which included workshops and other areas the public don't normally get to see (including

After a short shuttle bus trip from Mandurah station, we arrived at the Australian Sailing Museum where Rolly Tasker himself was there to greet us. Our patron Terry Gaunt and Rolly are sparring partners from way back and we were treated to many reminisces from past sailing encounters. Rolly gave us an interesting background to the formation of the museum and escorted us on a personal tour which included workshops and other areas the public don't normally get to see (including laser sails for $280). After a few hours in which we could not possibly see or take in everything, we left reluctantly and walked the short distance to Ciccerellos for a seafood lunch followed by a leisurely train trip back to Perth. Many thanks to Jerome for organising a really enjoyable day. John Wallace (MYC Vice Commodore) Photos taken by Sally Gaunt Sally Gaunt s Favourite Museum Display This is a photo of the item in the Australian Sailing Museum which I appreciated the most. It is a primitive map used by seafarers of the Marshall Islands (closest to the Haiiwan Islands). It was used by the people of the Marshall Islands to navigate the Pacific Ocean by canoe. It depicts an ocean swell pattern with waves disrupted by islands (cowrie shells). It is made from the midribs of coconut fronds tied together to form an open framework pattern. 6 From the Rear Commodore Sailing The 2011/12 Programme The 2011/12 sailing programme has been finalised and approved by Swan River Racing. This year s format includes a Practice Day for the 2nd of October A Good opportunity to come down to the club and give those muscles a work out and for the club stalwarts to run a days race programme. The City of Bayswater Regatta this year will be a single race format in the afternoon with the all day regatta day being re scheduled for a few weeks earlier, on the 18 March. For those of you who are looking for a casual get together over the Christmas break, we have scheduled an informal sail to Crawley on the 8 January starting around noon. The Serious Business of Sailing As for the business side of sailing, we have as per last year 22 race days. Looking at the logistics in manning the start box and two rescue boats, we need seven volunteers each race day. We are lucky that John Wood has offered again this season be make himself available for the start box for the majority of Sundays which leaves us with roughly 150 race positions to fill this season. The Roster System As per last season, I will be recommending that we again follow the excellent roster system that John Wallace designed so that us sailors can each contribute to making each race day a success and comply with our risk management policy. In saying that, based on the numbers last season, we should have around 35 sailing members which need to occupy 150 race administration vacancies. This means that every one has about four turns each on the roster. I will try to ensure that the roster is structured so that you will not miss out on more than one championship heat or short course heat throughout the season. I am totally with those of you who wish to preserve your valuable leisure time and I would like to see as many club members out their enjoying their day sailing. However, we all need to chip in and help if we want to maintain the present race format. Robert Hermans (RC Sailing) Please give the roster system your full support. If you are unable to do your rostered duty, it is your responsibly to get somebody to do it for you. Something to Consider for the Future Here is something for members to think about. The change in race format I have described below will free up some resources and reduce the number of roster days we each have to do. The Start Box would be fully manned for club heats only and all other races would be conducted on a self managed time trial basis. We would save 30 sailing administration positions for the season and have those extra boats out on the water. earlier than 2.20pm. I personally think racing against the clock and keeping the scratch boat behind you is a big motivator in improving skills and performance. On completion of the race, you record your elapsed time and the normal results for the day will be calculated. This is an idea only (if in the future there is a collective voice saying they want to do less roster days each season.see you out there and enjoy your sailing. Robert Hermans (RC Sailing) The Time Trials would work as follows: A skipper can choose to start within a fifteen minute window commencing at 2.00 pm and choose to start with another skipper who is likewise similar to their own performance and race against the clock.
