Commodore s Comments September 2006 It's nearly time to get our boats back on to the water for the upcoming summer sailing season. Somehow we seem to have skipped the Winter cold fronts and landed into Spring!! Anyway we look forward to having strong membership numbers and good sized fleets of boats at the Club this season. The Opening Day for the Maylands Yacht Club 2006/2007 Summer Series of sailing events will be held on day 15 October The opening ceremony will start at around 1330 hrs followed by a sail past at approximately 1350 hrs and an invitation race to start at about 1400 hrs. Invited Flag Officers and guests will be provided with afternoon tea following the opening ceremony. There will also be afternoon tea for competing sailors at the conclusion of racing. To assist with catering, members are asked to bring a small plate of food. All members are encouraged to participate in the Opening Day events. Once again we have a keen group of Flag Officers and committee members. The Management Committee for your Club this season are: Patron Terry Gaunt Commodore Jerome Toonen Vice Commodore Peter Kerrigan Rear Commodore House Vacant Rear Commodore Sailing John Wallace Rear Commodore Training Ken Patterson Committee members include: Secretary Alan Benn Treasurer John Gaunt Sailing Captain Blake Stephens Power Boat Captain Brian Plumb General committee Ian Pavey, Andrew Nichol, Kim Stephens, Bob Jackson, Chris Jones, Robert Herman, Kelvin Davis, and (there is one vacant committee member position) Other positions include: Bar Manager Canteen Manager Newsletter Editor Start box Lyn and Bert Brescianni Lisa Kerrigan David Puddey Max Albury, Sandy Patterson, Jan Puddey

Support Boat Hall Hire Cleaner MYC rep for YWA Adam Steele Lee Bickford Anthony s Cleaning Services (Marius De Zilwa) Vacant We have a full program of sailing events for the 06/07 Summer sailing season including the Opening Day invitation race (15 October 2006), a series of consistency/handicap races, a series of club championship heats, a short course series of races, a novelty sailing day (17 December 2006), the annual Picnic Race (25 March 2007) and the Bayswater Regatta (1 April 2007). A copy of the full sailing program for the 06/07 season is included elsewhere in this Mudlark magazine. Looks like we are set for another great season of sailing! We expect to have another strong fleet of Lasers this season and an increased number of boats in the mixed fleet. The whisper is that there are going to be 2 or 3 or 4 or more of the big 16 ft Hartleys sailing at MYC this season to give Mr Plumb a run for his money and several of those little Minnows zipping around nipping at our heels. Some of the club's hardy sailors have recently completed an enjoyable series of Winter races which were being held at the club on the second day of each month from May to September. All of the Winter races featured light winds and mild temperatures. There were about 10 boats on the water for each Winter race. Final results of the Winter series will be announced on Opening Day on 15 October. During the season Ken Patterson, Rear Commodore Training and his helpers will be continuing the day morning training programs for juniors. Both the Mirror class dinghies and the three Minnow class dinghies that the Club acquired towards the end of last season will be used for training this season. The whisper is that there are some more Minnow class dinghies being built or bought by MYC members and that we may end up with a good size fleet of these little boats. Great!!! In May this year the Club received a donation of $ from the Ron Tough Yachting Foundation (RTYF) to purchase a set of new sails for one of the Mirror class dinghies used for training. This will be a big help in our endeavours to progressively upgrade the training boats. As you may already know the worn out timber parquetry flooring in the main hall area of the Club premises has now been renewed/replaced with attractive jarrah timber boards or planks. This project was jointly funded by City of Bayswater and Maylands Yacht Club. The new flooring should serve the Club well for the next many years. The floor tiling in front of the bar and the carpet area between the timber floor and the viewing windows have also been renewed. Earlier this year the Club kindly received a donation of a fire hose, reel and cabinet from the Bardon family company Dobbie Dico Meter Co. Peter Kerrigan, Vice Commodore (and very handy bloke to have around) recently installed the cabinet and fire hose in front of the Club premises and the City of Bayswater organised for the fire hose to be connected to the water supply. The Club is once again inviting businesses and club members to sponsor a Race Day or Special Event during the 06/07 Summer Sailing season by donating cash or a

trophy/voucher. This concept has been very successful over the past few years and has provided good exposure to businesses that have provided sponsorship. Sponsors will be acknowledged on the Club website and in the Mudlark newsletter. If you are interested in sponsoring a race or special event please contact the Club secretary Alan Benn or myself. The Club is holding a major Busy Bee on Saturday 23 September from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm and day 24 September 2006 from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm. We need all willing and able members to come and help out at the Club at least for some period during these two days. Further details about this planned Busy Bee are included elsewhere in this magazine. A reminder that Club membership fees fall due on 1 September. Please forward your fee monies to the secretary as soon as possible. I look forward to your participation and fellowship at the club this season. Happy sailing to all. See you at the Busy Bee on Saturday 23 September Jerome Toonen Commodore Radial Ravings Radials Rejoice A new season approaches The days are getting longer and warmer a new sailing season must be about to start. It s time to get the wrinkles out of the 5.7 metre sail, dust off the hull, do all those maintenance tasks that were going to be done before the start of the season and make sure the body is ready to go. Hopefully there will be a range of breezes to suit all sailors - but no drifters. There has been enough of those during the winter series which tested the patience of the diehards who ventured out. Yours truly had the experience of getting within a couple of boat lengths of the finish line in one race only to go backwards and then finally finish 20 mins later. The Radial fleet numbers should be similar if not more than last season with a few new sailors having been around the club during winter. I was reading where Brendan Casey, a well known top level Australian Laser sailor has switched to the Finn due to competition for a Olympic berth in Lasers and also because his weight is now kgs. Another factor in his change of boat may be the light winds expected for the Olympics in China. But I m not sure where that leaves some of the Maylands radial sailors. Dare I suggest a weigh in at the start of season? Maybe this could be a factor in the handicapping and the lightweights would have to carry lead? It s done in Hobie 16 s. No one would object to being weighed would they? After all there aren t any women sailing Radials at the moment. It would be an interesting exercise! See you all on Opening Day for the weigh in.

Other Sailing matters In my new role as Rear Commodore Sail, I have produced a sailing programme for the coming season.. The new programme is based on last seasons as well as suggestions and direction from the committee. For your information it is included as part of the newsletter and will be posted on the club s website. Hopefully the changes will prove successful. Another change is that I will assume the Officer of the Day responsibilities for the season. When not available I will be looking for a substitute to fill the role. Several seasons back, a Laser training session was held at the club on a day morning by Tim Castles for a small group at modest cost. If anybody is interested then please let me know and providing there is enough numbers then another session could be organised. Any other suggestions, problems etc regarding sailing matters please contact me. 5 The Minnow s Tale Minnow (min-oh) n. 1. A small freshwater fish of the carp family. 2. A mighty sailing ship on a three-hour cruise A new class of yacht at the Maylands Yacht Club. Well G day to you all and welcome back to the best part of the year. That s right, opening day is just around the corner so it s time for some sun, fun and a sore bum. Does anyone remember those days at Maylands when the club was bursting at the seams with pesky little juniors? I do, but sadly the numbers have diminished in recent years. Well things are about to change. Soon the waters of Maylands are going to be a sea of blue sails so lazy laser sailors who turn up late will be battling to find room to rig amongst hundreds of Minnows spread across the lawns. The changerooms will once again be littered with forgotten tee shirts, towels and wetsuits, the canteen will be emptied of any way cool stuff and wet sandy footprints will be the norm upstairs. Did I say soon? One thing is for certain, the Minnow fleet has been born and has already increased in size to 7 boats. Last year the club was given 3 boats by The Cruising Yacht Club in Rockingham to kickstart our fleet. Recently the Club purchased a fourth boat, Hugh and Owen Davis are helping their dad Kelvin build a new timber boat and they have bought an older fibreglass boat. Amy Kerrigan has got herself a fibreglass boat and Ben wants to know where his is. Back in July, I think it was, we had a bit of a get together to try out the minnows and put Amy s boat through it s paces. It was a pretty windy, miserable day but those that turned up had a bit of fun. Hugh jumped in one boat and took off like he was born in the thing. Owen and his mate Daniel went two up but nearly didn t make it past the end of the jetty. Amy took off in her new boat but soon returned and explained that she was not going out until the weather behaved itself. Ben jumped in Amy s boat did about ten 360s 5 metres from shore, shot off into the middle of the river and capsized. When he righted himself he stated that he would rather have gone to his cousin s birthday party. Lara, who was a bit unsure about sailing on her own had to sail Ben s boat back to shore after Ben retired to the rescue boat. I think Lara discovered it was quite fun after all. Guy took off like a rocket then came a bit unstuck when he got caught in irons in the strong breeze. After he was shown what to do he really got the boat going and I am sure will be a keen competitor in the class.

Hugh and Owen Davis have entered Junior Sail Junior Sail is a coaching clinic run by Yachting WA and is being hosted this year by NYC in September. Next time you see Hugh and Owen they will be brimming with knowledge that, I have no doubt, they will expatiate (look it up) to those game enough to ask. The minnows will have racing on day mornings starting about 11:00 am and I am confident of having 7 or 8 boats on the water within a couple of weeks of opening day. The club is going to lease the club minnows to juniors at very reasonable rates so those that are interested should speak to me to book your boat. We will be having another informal pre season event soon and with any luck the weather will be a little more kind so that we can get a bit more sailing in. I will contact everyone in due course to organise this. I have put together a pretty full on sailing programme for the juniors this season so it should be a lot of fun. That s it for this inaugural Minnow Tale. See you down the club. From the Skipper

Junior Corner Last year during training I felt early skill development amongst those who had never sailed before was much faster than it had been in previous years. It may be that last year s group was quicker off the mark than previously, however, it is something I put down to the fantastic way the previous season s trainees assisted as peer tutors in the early stages. It made a huge difference to have an accomplished sailor in a boat with a novice to give on the spot advice and encouragement. This year we would love to see the same happening. While I am aware that some of last year s group are now equipped with their own Minnows and keen to begin the racing program being organized, the plan is to stagger the start of the Minnow racing season for the first two weeks to allow this peer tutoring to happen once again. We need you guys! It would be great to have you join us for the first couple of training days. Should any Club member know of kids or adults interested in having a go at sailing, encourage them to come along to Opening Day to have a look around the Club and see how we operate or to contact me via the Club address posted on our website. Looking forward to a great season Ken (and Ossie, John and Max)
