SUMMER IS ALMOST HERE! Twilight sailing has returned from 5pm every Wednesday night until 12 th December, resuming again in the New Year on 16th January. We welcome the official start of the summer months this weekend, which only leaves three more sailing days until the Xmas break, so please come along and support the club by participating in the following events.
SHORT COURSE RACING Sunday 2 nd December 2pm start This is the perfect opportunity to come along and try out your newly learned skills in racing conditions. These SHORT COURSE races are ideal for the Bronze and Silver Fleets. Both races are minutes long so even the slowest boat is never far behind the pack. Coach Doug encourages his Bronze Fleet sailors to come and race on the 2 nd, and if that means missing the 9.30 coaching because you can t do both sessions, then miss it! CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Heat 3 Sunday 9th December 2pm start Date for your diary Sunday 16 th December Maylands Yacht Club Christmas Event This event is for the whole club, everyone is welcome! There will be a free BBQ and some novelty events. Please bring a plate (sweet or savoury) to share Date for you Diary 3rd February Maylands Yacht Club s annual Not-to-be-missed FUN DAY! There will be no sailing on this day, but come down at 9.30 for a morning of hilarious, wet fun on the grass and the river. Activities might include: a slippy-slide and washing up liquid, knot entanglement fun, flour-bomb cricket, how many people can fit on a laser and Mimi s Pig Throwing competition. Yes, there will be pigs to throw! Plus there will be food! All Junior Sailors at Maylands Yacht Club Stay tuned for details of a Maylands Yacht Club Movie Night/Sleepover sometime in the holidays.
Steve Rose Commodore Josh Abordi is enjoying his Silver Fleet sailing Highlights of the season so far: The season began with horrible weather heavy rain, very strong wind followed by a day of very light/no wind. 1 st ever class held upstairs out of the rain Despite the poor start, good progress being made with the LTS course, with most sailing well in stiff breezes at times than would usually see boats capsizing.
Attendees have generally been quick on the uptake, most acquiring skills to sail a dinghy around a triangular course as demonstrated last Sunday. Unfortunately attendance was poorer than usual due to sickness or injury. Don t worry if you were not there the opportunities for catching up will be many. What has been good to see is the fun the group has been having on the water. Most are now very close to completing the 1 st certificate course. The new RIB boat is proving to be an asset as one of the Support Boats, much easier to handle than the previous one. Two trainees tried out the Minnows last Sunday, Ben Maine and Nick Winterbourne. Although Ben struggled with the wind it was terrific to see him having a go. Unfortunately Nick s boat suffered gear failure and he had to return to shore, otherwise he managed very well. I can see him wanting to sail a Minnow in future classes. Nick Winterbourne The Bronze Fleet is progressing well. Doug is teaching the group how to raise and use a spinnaker without capsizing. In his absence last Sunday Andrew escorted the group to Claisebrook Inlet. The Silver Fleet is crying
out for more participants in the racing all members of the Bronze Fleet should consider getting involved. With the warmer weather now with us we will need to deliberately capsize boats so that the recovery skill s can be demonstrated. Expect to be sharing the water with the very friendly and harmless jellyfish in the near future. Henry Foster, Bronze Fleet
Grace & Harry Middleton
Callum Bickley and his father Andrew
Jerome Toonen and Roy Pearce Many thanks to: All those members who gave their time and muscle to assist in sprucing up the training fleet. The rearrangement of the rigging has made our training boats much easier to handle, and the new paint has improved
the appearance of the boats enormously. There are still a few issues with several boats that need attention. If any problems are found with boats during rigging or use please let one of the training helpers know. We will do our best to attend to the issue as soon as possible. Brendan Maine for his coordinating and cooking of the Sunday BBQ. Thanks too to Brett and other parents for their willing involvement. Brendan, Jerome and others involved for the creation of the new extension of the boatshed. Parents for their willingness to assist in getting boats rigged and on the water, as well as with their recovery at the conclusion of each class. Thanks to all involved for their return of the PFDs to the storeroom, now magnificent due to the almighty effort of Glenn & Mimi at the pre-season busy bee. The wonderful team of assistants each Sunday morning Andrew Carter, Bob Jackson, Jerome Toonen, Les Mack, Doug Pianta and more recently David Ponton who willingly give their time and expertise. Thanks to Chris Holyday too for his work with the Silver Fleet. Ken P LASERS AND SABRES
The Club's main fleets for afternoon racing continue to enjoy a friendly rivalry, sailing over the same courses this season. The Sabres get a 5 minutes head start over the faster Lasers (well at least some of them are faster). The first Sabres can usually stay out in front of the first Radial Lasers until the final lap, however the second Club Championship Heat proved to be a revelation - no Radials were able to catch the leading Sabre for the first time. Two Full Rigs with Messrs Ponton and Bolleter aboard were certainly sailing
fast and were able to slip through on the final legs, but that was all! Now we are not sure if the Sabre sailors are improving, or if the Radials are getting slower with Old Man Time reminding them that you have to be young and fit to sail these Olympic classes quickly. Of course, it had nothing to do with a gusty westerly front with rain squalls that barrelled into the fleets head-on during the Maylands to Club leg for the first time around the course... no, no it couldn't be that! The Sabres welcome two lady skippers to the fleet - Rolna Stoeger in the classy Gone With The Wind (ex Ray Martin's Jam) and Mimi Secco in Tango (ex Steve Rose). I sailed against Rolna in a recent Silver Fleet race and she was right up to top speed - we can see some very close racing developing as the season progresses and our new sailors adjust to their boats. Welcome ladies! And welcome to Steve Rose's new boat BUGGER (ex Tiwi)... but Steve has informed us that the offending name has been removed, and we will be seeing a brand new name this weekend... maybe...
LASER/SABRE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS HEATS 1 AND 2 WRAP UP In the Laser Full Rigs, Julian Bolleter's Tupperware Boat descended on the club again like a seagull to a chip, and stole the first heat from Rob Herman's
Water Taxi. However, by Heat 2 a certain sailor, returning to Maylands after a long absence, (may the force be with him) took the prime podium position in Force Majeure - well done David Ponton, see report below - with Julian swooping in second. The Radials saw Alan Benn in Ayoopdook winning heat 1 from Jerome Toonen in Stuffabout only to see the result reversed in heat 2. A similar story unfolded in the Sabres, with Terry Gaunt Jnr (Scimitar) taking out heat 1 from Chris Holyday in C3, but that result was also reversed in heat 2. The Sabres hope to see more of Jerome and Alan in coming races before we reach the beach after the race has finished! C3
Welcome back to Maylands David Ponton. It was good to see David back sailing at the front of the Laser fleet after a few years absence. He has also been helping out sailing in the Silver Fleet races at with Matt Maine in The Imp - returning to the Mirrors after quite a long absence since his
childhood days! Not content with cleaning up with a first place in the second club heat recently, Dave also took out the coveted Mug trophy in the same race. An irrepressible force of nature is a good name for his laser - especially when he took on the laser fleet on starboard tack at the starting line! Julian Bolleter also felt the force when he was luffed up rapidly and ended up in the water after taking drastic evasive action. That can only bring one final comment - may the force be with you!!!! 19 MIRROR NEWSFLASH Blackadder (Corwell family), Crescendo (Secco family) and 2Pudd (yours truly Doug and Rolna) are all putting the final touches to their skills and boat maintenance before heading off to Sydney for the nationals and world championships being held at Woollahra Sailing Club, Sydney. The Maylands boats join a very competitive WA fleet from Nedlands and Freshwater Bay and will be competing in most categories including the old farts, heavyweights, ladies, classic and family trophies. Go well and be a good example of what Maylands stands for. BRONZIES The bronzies of late have had a taste of speeding fines when they all popped their red green and blue spinnakers for the first time. Scarlett and Matt were really practising low flying in the Imp on one of their reaches with a tad tooooooooo much power on. Kaan and Andrew in Quickstep always had control of their kite and they are looking forward to a little more breeze and a little less centre plate. Harry and Grace had their hands full taking on Full Turtle in full flight but managed to control the beast and look forward to next week s sea breeze and flat water. The next leap will be to gybe with the kite up and stay in control. Scarlet gets the award for the best lift-off and smooth landing. Well done BRONZIES.
Footnote: 2019 State Champs are being sailed at Royal Perth on the 2/3 February All Bronzies and Silver Fleet Mirrors need to compete as we need five boats - so grab a senior sailor and reserve your boat so we all enjoy the event. Last years Bronzies are most welcome as well as Dad and Dave teams. 2PUDD

The Radio sailors have been sailing at MYC many Saturdays, but not all. There have been other regattas around the State, in which many of the radio sailors have been participating. Recently, the Western Australian State A Class championships resulted in a win for Rob Mews, taking the event by sailing really cleanly in light and shifty winds. Rob had great boat speed and was a deserved winner on the day. Another member, Sean Wallis has been representing WA at a series of regattas both over east as well as internationally. He travelled to the land of the long white cloud and finished second in the New Zealand IOM National Championships ahead of a fleet of 30. The following weekend he managed to win the Queensland State IOM championships and subsequently attended
the NSW championships finishing a creditable second. On the first weekend in December, most of the Maylands radio sailors will be attending the WA State International One Meter championships in Albany. The weekend promises to be a lot of fun, whilst the racing will be very competitive. As you can see, there are plenty of opportunities to travel with radio controlled boats. They can be taken easily on an aeroplane and only attract charges for one piece of additional oversize luggage. Otherwise, they are easy to throw in the back of the car and go for a drive! Next February, many of our members will be attending the Australian National Championships which will be held on the Gold Coast. Planning is well underway, and a concerted effort by WA skippers will hopefully result in some good finishes. Glenn Membership Renewals Just a reminder to get your renewals paid up for the 2018/19 sailing season. If you have already paid, thank you.
