1 wind speed (knots) wind direction (degrees) A Slow Start but Faster Finish Wednesday Wonders Winter Series 218 Race 1 (6 Jun 218) Warm winter sunshine, flat water and light variable breezes were the recipe for race 1. The breeze was so light that the start was delayed by 3 minutes in the expectation that conditions would improve. They didn t. This left the large 39 yacht fleet searching for the best patches of breeze in the shortest race of the series. The breeze probably varied more around the course than observations at Fawkner indicate but they produced an absorbing afternoons sailing. Fawkner Beacon recorded an average speed of about 7 knots for the afternoon increasing from 3 to 1 knots as the afternoon progressed. There was also a major change in direction from south east to north north east. WW Winter Series 218 Race 1 Wind Speed & Direction Wind Speed Gusts Wind Direction time Making this her first win and second podium finish of the series was MIDNIGHT MAGIC (Bernadette Moore). She was followed across the line by CLUB COMEDIE (Darren Eger) registering her second podium finish this winter. In third place was VINDALOO (John Taylor) who becomes the first yacht to collect three podium finishes this series. Start of the day was won by VIVE LA VIE (Mark Sutherland) who was only 2 seconds late for her 11 minute handicap. The fastest time around the course was first time Wednesday Wonder PATRIOT (Jason Close). She completed the 3 legs in 1:7:1. This is the fastest elapsed time this series. The results of the race brought about a change in the aggregate. CAFE RACER moves to the top up from 6 th place to be equal on 28 points with PIPPA (Jeffrey Woolhouse). After moving up from 7 th place VINDALOO is 3 rd, equal on points with a second Triton 24 WILLARIE (Graeme Kaufman).
2 This win by MIDNIGHT MAGIC gives her a big lift in the aggregate. She moved her up from 26 th to 16 th place. She started the race from 3 rd place 87 seconds late for her 7 minute handicap. This was her latest start so far this series and was 1 minute 47 seconds later than WILLARIE. However MIDNIGHT MAGIC had found enough wind on the first windward leg to take her to the front of the fleet on the leg from number 1to number 7. She was able to sail the 3 leg course in 1:47:22 3 minutes 33 seconds faster than WILLARIE and she crossed the finish line at 15:54:22 in first place. It was her second podium finish in 9 completed races. CLUB COMEDIE has completed 7 races this series with the last three all being top ten finishes. She was one of 4 yachts in this race with an 18 minute handicap and was 47 seconds late starting from 9 th place. She had moved into 3 rd place on the run from number 1 to 7 and sailed the course in 1:37:12 to finish 5 seconds behind MIDNIGHT MAGIC. Of the 3 other yachts with 18 minute handicaps CLUB COMEDIE sailed the course 3 minutes 4 seconds faster than CAFE RACER; 7 minutes 56 seconds faster than CASSANDRA (Bob Reeves); and, 8 minutes 12 seconds faster than FOGGY DEW (Frank Hilliard). She finished ahead of these 3 yachts by 4 places, 16 places and 17 places. CLUB COMEDIE moved from 35 th to be 18 th in the series aggregate. VINDALOO moved up 4 places to be third in the aggregate with a total of 3 points. She has completed 9 of the ten races and recorded 4 top ten finishes. Her handicap has increased in stages from 33 minutes at the start of the series to 42 minutes for this race. She started from 29 th place only 4 seconds late the 3 rd best start of the race. She started 23 seconds after WHITE NOISE (Daniel Edwards) but was able to sail the course in 1:14: the 3 rd fastest elapsed time of the race. This was 1 minutes 35 seconds faster than WHITE NOISE. VINDALOO crossed the finish line at 15:56: 48 seconds after CLUB COMEDIE.
