1 A Choppy Start and a Swell 20min Finish Wednesday Wonders Race 5 Summer /11/2017 FORECAST Wind 13knts SW shifting to SSW later in afternoon, temperature 16 THE RACE Race 5 started in a sea that was very choppy making it a slow track to No 5. Skippers needed to take care not to stall and point too high in the fickle wind. Only 34 yachts competed in Race 5 making it the smallest fleet yet. Some skippers were put off by the threat of rain. As the afternoon progressed the wind increased and the seas flattened out allowing for faster progress. A sign on the Wailing Wall alarmed sailors that there was a Generalized 5 min handicap increase except for the slower yachts. A wholesale change to this week s lucky numbers. Watch out for Race 6 numbers as it follows Cup Day, and the result of the Melbourne Cup could influence your handicap. Again there was a glitch in the starting clock and the race was delayed 10 minutes, starting at 13:40. A gust coming just on starting time may have influenced some skippers to reduce their sail but extra power was required slicing through the swell. THE WIND Average wind speed for the afternoon 11 knots THE START Median start time of 10 seconds, best of the series so far, all but one yacht within 25 seconds or less of their handicap. Out of 4 races Start of the Day has been won by 4 different yachts. PIZAZZ with a start of 1 second won Race 5 start of the day. No eager beavers in this race.

3 THE WINNERS Yet another 3 different yachts recorded podium finishes, making 12 different yachts receiving the 12 glittering weekly prizes. Only 4 yachts that started in the first half of the fleet finished in the first half. This weeks race result did not change the order of the top 4 yachts in the aggregate CONQUEST, ANDANTE1, WHITE POINTER and ESPRIT. Fastest around the course NUTCRACKER II recorded fastest elapsed time in each of the 4 completed races. This race took her 1:48:53. No Commodore, we have got your time correct! When a race starts 10 mins late the times displayed on the race results are not adjusted by 10 min. So the time shown here is correct. Just imagine how much faster she would be if she used two sails not just her jib. Third Place INSX Sm 5985 Starting 25 th off 44 mins and 10 seconds late. Lap time 2:03:31

Health Issues Another syndrome to affect WW skippers is the I have no chance syndrome. Yachts that start early are particularly affected by the IHNC syndrome when they are passed by faster boats before the first or second mark and are left with nothing to aim for in the race except for trying not to be the last yacht home. This is caused by weather variation particular light winds course selection i.e. longer courses that do not match the design of the handicaps Having a dirty bottom on your yacht.

5 Mark s Warning about trying to get Sandy Capper to reduce your handicap More advice./ Give up trying to convince him that a 38 ft. yacht is not really that fast. No matter what position you finish in don t assume that Sandy Capper will not look at the elapsed time of yachts. Don't assume that the Sandy Capper has a short memory and will forget where you came last season. If you are going to influence Sandy Capper don t make it obvious that you are presenting him a large bottle of something from the skipper of a winning yacht. There may be too many witnesses in the bar. Don't think that producing and showing a lot of statistics will improve your handicap. Try coming last a few times might improve your handicap. Average Elapsed time 2:22:21 Note the very small difference in elapsed time for Magic 616 who finished 31 st and the winning yacht Maribel. Different crew have different roles on Bacardi. Can you advise Mark who is doing what in this photo? It obviously was a lot of work for one crew who needed a rest.

6 1 3 out of the last 17 starters finished among the first half of the fleet PART TWO Keith Woodruff in Andante has just entered the lakes - Continued from race 4 Once in the Lakes we made for Paynesville. We found the best berthing was at Slip Bight Marina run by East Gippsland Shire. Pens are secure and water and electricity are included. The best pens are on the floating pontoon and though we didn t score one of these we were very happy to make the marina our base for three months. There are good toilets and showers accessed with your security key. There are also industrial sized washing machines and dryers included in the cost of the pen and we had access to the Paynesville Motor Cruiser Club and adjacent Thai restaurant within the same building. Plenty of parking though limited shade. Our 3 months were spent visiting our favourite spots identified over many years chartering from River Nautica in Metung : Duck Arm, Rotamah Island, Bunga Arm, Boxes Creek, Ocean Grange, etc, etc. All the public jetties and mooring buoys are free though they are all subject to time limits and can get crowded. This made it very useful to have a base back in Paynesville. Sunset from Ocean Grange attached: You do need to have not too deep a draft however. We are only 1.42m so could get around fairly easily though Uncle Ray (Marine) complained a lot. You could alternatively just switch the echo sounder off and cruise around in ignorant bliss. The bottom is invariably soft and a little judicious ploughing usually gets you there or at least off if you go too far. The charter boats don t have sounders or wind instruments that can get caught in gum trees etc. There are a selection of shops and pubs in Metung & Paynesville as well as Lakes Entrance itself. Bairnsdale also has heaps of facilities if you have a car or if you are not too tall to get up the river. There are several overhead electric cables of varying heights around the Lakes and we are too tall to get to Bairnsdale though have been there in a smaller charter boat. A highlight of one visit was seeing an echidna trot down to the river; swim across, clamber out and trot back upstream on the other side. Unbelievable but true! Highly recommended for those with reasonable draft and who are able to either put their boat on a trailer or sail down round the Prom. Alternatively charter for a few weeks! Enjoy! Keith Woodruff

She has been brought back from interstate to SYC by her previous crew who will be back in action again racing in WW, with Albert crewing, and hopefully a mast. 9 Home is the Sailor - My Country, My Family, My Life by Stan Rankin, Self Published You will be aware after many years in the making Stan has finally completed a book telling about his long life. SYC has 2 copies available for loan. To keep track of the books the following procedure is being adopted. There will be a borrowing book kept by the Tower Management You can request to borrow a copy by writing your name in the borrowing book. It is suggested that the loan be for 3 weeks. When a copy is available it will be given to you after a Wednesday race. It can be returned either to SYC reception, or to the tower management after a Wednesday race. It is hoped that this will give a wide number of members an opportunity to read and enjoy Stan s interesting histor I wonder what it is like to sail on a small red yacht? Dawn was on the little red yacht in Race 5 and came home 11th in front of White Pointer 21 st. So she was able to take a line from them as they came in. Thanks Dawn, from the Pippa Skipper for your assistance.
