1 A Good Series in the Making Wednesday Wonders Summer Series Race 7 (18 Nov 2015) Wednesday Wonders has enjoyed a very good start to the summer series with all seven scheduled races being completed. Every race has gone the full distance without any need for course shortening. Thirteen yachts have completed all 7 races with an additional eleven yachts each completing 6 races. There have been 17 different podium finishers out of a possible 21 with each race having a different winner; and, 5 different yachts have occupied top spot in the aggregate. Race 7 was contested by a fleet of 39 yachts (that s almost 83% of the aggregate entries) and all finished well within the time limit. Of the 31 yachts that contested both races 6 and 7, two had their handicaps increased whilst eleven had theirs reduced? (See last page) There was a good start to the race without any yachts starting too soon and the third perfect start of the series was recorded by Nsx 38, INSX (Rob Sill). For the second time this series the 6 leg, 9.8 nautical mile course 14 was selected. This includes the long 3.1 nautical mile leg between numbers 5 and 7. Some of the marks, particularly number 3, attracted quite a crowd with as many as 5 yachts rounding the mark all overlapped. The finish saw 20 yachts crossing the line within 10 minutes of the winner and there was a tie for 18 th place between CONQUEST (Paul Jacka) and CASSANDRA of MELBOURNE (Bob Reeves). The weather played a role in the enjoyment of the day. It was warm, sunny (at least for most of the time) with flat seas and a steady southeasterly breeze that averaged about 11 knots for the afternoon. 2 The last time the Farr 1020 TEQUILA (Alan Collins) won a WW race was during the winter 2014 series when she won race 21 (27 Aug 2014). It was one of three podium finishes she recorded in that series when her average handicap was 25 minutes. In this race TEQUILA started from 7 th place 8 seconds late for a 22 minute handicap her best start and lowest handicap of the series. By the first rounding of number 4 she had moved into 3 rd position and continued the race to cross the finish line at 15:51:44. TEQUILA had sailed the course in just less than 2 hours in 1:59:44. She is in 28 th place in the aggregate after completing 5 races. The Eastcoast 31 MIDNIGHT MAGIC and skipper Bernadette Moore have a long association with WW. She can be found in the archived results of summer MIDNIGHT MAGIC last had a WW win in the summer series. In fact she had 2 wins that series the last being on 21 Jan MIDNIGHT MAGIC was the first yacht to start this race 59 seconds late for her minus 5 minute handicap - her worst start of the series so far. She led the fleet around the first triangle of the course rounding number 4 for the first time at 15:05:35. It took MIDNIGHT MAGIC 48 minutes 40 seconds to sail the final 3 legs of the course and she crossed the finish line in 2 nd place at 15:54:15. She missed winning this race by 2 minutes 31 seconds. MIDNIGHT MAGIC has sailed 4 races this series and is 31 st in the aggregate. In Race 6 the Sydney 36 WIND SPEED (Les Browne) came 3 rd. After a 2 minute handicap increase was still able to finish 3 rd in race 7. She missed 2 nd place by 31 seconds and recorded the shortest elapsed time for the race. WIND SPEED started the race from 33 rd place 54 seconds late for her 45 minute handicap. She sailed the first 3 legs of the course in 1:04:19 and by that stage she had moved into 17 th place. The last 3 legs of the course were sailed in 34 minutes 33 seconds and WIND SPEED crossed the finish line at 15 54:46 in 3 rd place. WIND SPEED is one of the 13 yachts to have completed all 7 races this series and leads the aggregate. She has some very impressive results that include 4 top ten finishes two 3 rds, one 6 th and one 7 th.

3 INSX won Start of the Day with the perfect start. It is her first win this series but, out of seven starts five have been within 5 seconds or less of her handicap. At this stage of the series she looks like the one to beat for the Misty Blue Trophy. All but two of the 39 yachts in race 7 started within 59 seconds or less of their handicaps and the median start time was below the series average at 16 seconds.

4 In addition to the tie for 18 th place eight yachts had a close finish crossing the line within 1 minute 53 seconds, that s an average of one every 14 seconds. The 39-yacht fleet began 55 minutes and 12 seconds apart; at the first rounding of number 4 the gap had reduced to 22 minutes 41 seconds but increased to be 24 minutes 51 seconds at the finish. The finish of the race was a reasonable balance of early, mid fleet and late starters. Of the first 13 yachts to finish the race, four were early among the first 13 to start, 4 from the middle 13 and 5 from the last 13 to start.

5 WIND SPEED recorded the shortest elapsed time for the race, 21 seconds faster than the Beneteau First 45 CONQUEST (Paul Jacka). INSX and the Sydney 36 ALIBI (Denis Hambleton) both recorded the same elapsed time of 1:43:29 whilst the average elapsed time was 2 hours exactly. Dividing the elapsed time by the course rhumb line length provides the time taken to sail one nautical mile. The faster yachts sail a mile in a little over 10 minutes whilst the slower ones take over 15 minutes. The details are shown in the following chart.

7 The Wednesday Wonders Classic Car Yacht Race Wednesday 2 nd December 2015 race 9. This race will be conducted as a normal Wednesday Wonders Race. Normal scoring for the Wednesday Wonders series will remain in place. The handicap start times will be determined as usual by the Wednesday Wonders handicapper. However there will be some modifications to the start procedure. Adjustments will be made to the yacht s finishing position by various time adjustments to bring about a finishing position for the results for the Car Yacht race Scores Eligibility: Any Wednesday Wonder Sailor and can prove by photo or other means that the car that they own or did once own was manufactured pre Rules: There will be an old style Grand Prix Le Mans start. The nominated car driver will start from the Ken King Centre 20 minutes before his/her yacht s official handicap start time (as per the regular sheets for WW racing). Other crew &/or Skipper may be aboard the yacht. The nominated Driver must be named in advance of the race with the entry for the car race. Adjustments to finish times: Classic Car Race finishing times may be adjusted after the race Reduction to finish times LESS 5 mins if the Classic car is parked in SYC Nth Car park prior to the race. (Or near) LESS 2 min For Best-dressed classic car owner LESS 1 min the best car photo submitted LESS 2 min for The oldest Car Increases to finish time PLUS 5 mins for late entry PLUS 6 mins for failure for the designated driver starting at an incorrect time from the Ken King Centre. Plus 5 mins for late entries Prizes: A Perpetual Trophy will be presented and a special bottle of wine donated by Red Bluff Homes. Additional prizes may be awarded. Entries: must be submitted to Mark Windward before midnight on the 25 th November otherwise a 5 min penalty will apply. ENTRY Information to include: Yacht Name & Sail Number Skipper Skipper s address The make and year of the classic car. - Evidence of Car ownership e.g. a photo of the car, or registration papers, or the car itself. The nominated Classic Car Owner: This will be the person who will be at the Ken King Centre and be responsible for the correct start time for the yacht. Notification of the need for car parking space required to park at SYC in the undercroft area. MARK WINDWARD The answer to Race 6 question The ship was the MS KONG HARALD 1993, tons, 19.2m beam, 15 knots. She is one of the Hurtigruten ferries that every day travels the 1,500miles from Bergen to Kirkenes on the Norwegian Russian border. The Classic Round-trip in the hall of fame of world travel (12 days). It is a little bit like being on a local bus stopping at 34 ports to deliver goods and pick up passengers along the way. It carries 622 passengers, 470 beds. The fare is Aus. $6500 but varies with the seasons. Travelling mostly in protected waters with quaint villages nestled in steep hills. It is a stunning journey particularly in summer when at midnight you can still read the newspaper without extra light. Grab a sheet. Having the crew in uniform does save having to count them each time we tack to see if we have picked up any extras. It might not look very neat but we finished very well. If you don t want to be in the photo, hide. No we do not need any more weight in the back of the boat. It will just slow us down. Well I could sit up on the side, but someone has to keep the helmsman company. If it takes that many people to balance my weight on the windward side maybe I had better loose weight.
