2 Rigging and splicing The durability of the splicing work is always above the durability of the original rope. The durability of a splicing is based on friction and the phenomena of self-obstruction and always lies above the strength of the original rope. Reason is the fact that a rope being pulled will expand and decrease its diameter. Through the splice, the strands are in immediate contact. The developing friction angle between them is smaller than the tangent of the friction of the rope material. Because of that the friction is increased overproportionately, the more is pulled on the rope. A B C Whipping: Securing the lose ends on a rope. With a whipping, the rope is prevented from coming undone. Eye splice Permanent eye, loop, to occupy bollards, cleats etc. The eye splice is a splice where the end of the rope is worked into the rope itself so that an eye (a loop) is created. It is a lot more durable than a knotted loop. Short splice: The short splice is done to connect two twisted ropes. For that the ends are being unraveled. A disadvantage of the short splice is his thickness so that a slipping through at running lines can be influenced or even prevented. Therefore not all lines can be spliced that way.
