2 Introduction Device model and validity This supplement describes the ULTRAMAT 23 with a paramagnetic oxygen sensor. The supplement only covers the specific components of this ULTRAMAT 23 version. The standard operating instructions for the ULTRAMAT 23 (C79000-G52xx-C216) as of revision 03 should be read in any case to ensure safe operation of this device. This applies, above all, to the warnings and safety information provided there. Product information / technical updating Description Area of application The paramagnetic oxygen sensor is used to measure oxygen in dry gases free of particulates. Application areas include Flue gas analysis Inerting plants Room air monitoring Medical engineering Function Measuring principle In contrast to other gases, oxygen is highly paramagnetic. This property is used as the basis for the method of measurement. Figure 1 Measuring principle Two permanent magnets generate an inhomogeneous magnetic field in the measuring cell. If oxygen molecules flow into the measuring cell 1, they are drawn into the magnetic field. This results in the two diamagnetic hollow spheres 2 being displaced out of the magnetic field. This rotary motion is recorded optically, and serves as the input variable for control of a compensation flow. This generates a torque opposite to the rotary motion around the two hollow spheres by means of a wire loop 3. The compensation current is proportional to the concentration of oxygen. This involves adjustment of the zero point and sensitivity of the IR channels. When a paramagnetic oxygen sensor is used, its sensitivity is also adjusted to ambient air with a concentration of 20.95% oxygen. Subsequently, the analyzer switches to measuring mode and measures continuously. Operating mode In operating mode, you can view parameters or adjust the analyzer. This supplement only describes the functions relevant to operation of the paramagnetic oxygen sensor. A complete overview of all the analyzer's control functions can be found in the standard operating instructions of the ULTRAMAT 23 (C G52xx-C216-03). A5E , 12/

6 Press the ENTER key in measuring mode to start the operating mode. The main menu appears with the follow options. Analyzer status Calibration Parameters Configuration Diagnostic control functions Diagnostic values The displayed diagnostic values provide important information for troubleshooting and calibration tasks. To view the diagnostic values of the paramagnetic oxygen sensor, navigate as follows: Diagnostics -> Diagnostic values -> Probe diagnostic values -> Choose component -> O2. The following screen appears: Sensorsig.: 1680 mv O2 : % This dialog shows the diagnostic values of the paramagnetic oxygen sensor. They have the following meaning: Probe voltage is the actual voltage of the paramagnetic oxygen sensor in mv as a non-compensated raw value. O2 is the measured oxygen value in %. Negative values are also possible here. Calibration control functions You first need to select the O2 sensor in order to adjust it. To do this, navigate in the operator menu as follows: Calibration -> Please enter code -> Calibrate probe -> Choose component -> O2. The following screen appears: Start zero cal. Start MR cal. Now you can adjust the sensor as described in the following sections. The following sequence must be observed when calibrating the sensor: 1. Calibrate the zero point of the paramagnetic oxygen sensor 2. Calibrate the measuring range of the paramagnetic oxygen sensor Adjusting the zero point You can calibrate the zero point of the paramagnetic oxygen sensor using this function. You must use nitrogen as the zero gas. Nitrogen must be connected to the sample gas inlet. To do this, navigate as follows: Calibration -> Please enter code -> Calibrate probe -> O2 -> Calibrate zero point. 14 A5E , 12/2010

7 The following screen appears: Zero calibration 0.43 % O2 Zero gas flow please Correct with ENTER Now connect nitrogen, and wait until the displayed value is stable. Subsequently begin the calibration by pressing the ENTER key. The measuring range of the paramagnetic oxygen sensor is calibrated as standard with ambient air during each AUTOCAL. However, individual calibration with a freely selectable setpoint between 2% and 100% O2 is also possible. NOTICE If an individual calibration has been carried out using calibration gas, the next AUTOCAL overwrites this calibration. The AUTOCAL must be deactivated if this is not required. Adjust setpoint You can use this function to adjust the setpoint of the calibration gas for calibration of the measuring range. To do this, navigate as follows: Calibration -> Please enter code -> Calibrate probe -> O2 -> Calibrate MR. The following screen appears: MR Cal. Set span gas value Start Cal. MR1+2 Now you can set the setpoint as follows: 1. Position the cursor at the beginning of the 2nd line (Setpoint) and press the ENTER key. The following screen appears: MR1+2: 80 % 2. Enter the desired setpoint, and then press the ENTER key. 3. Exit the menu with ESC. Calibration of the zero point must be carried out regularly to guarantee the accuracy of the paramagnetic oxygen sensor. Information on the achievable accuracy and the calibration cycles can be found in the Technical data (Page 11). Calibrating the measuring range You can calibrate the sensitivity of the paramagnetic oxygen sensor using this function. To do this, navigate as follows: Calibration -> Please enter code -> Calibrate probe -> Choose component -> O2 -> Calibrate MR. A5E , 12/

8 The following screen appears: MR Cal. Set span gas value Start Cal. MR1+2 Now perform the full-scale calibration as follows: 1. Connect the sample gas inlet (1) to the calibration gas 2. Inject calibration gas with a flow rate of l/min 3. Position the cursor at the beginning of the 3rd line (Start calibration) and press the ENTER key. Once the intended flow rate is reached, the message 'Correction with ENTER' appears in the 4th line of the display. 4. Wait until the displayed measured value has stabilized. 5. Start the calibration by pressing the ENTER key. 6. To exit the menu, press the ESCkey. Replacing the sensor The sensor may only be replaced by specially trained personnel. We therefore recommend that you return the analyzer to the factory in order to replace the sensor. If replacement is carried out on site nevertheless, you must expect limitations in the measuring accuracy. Details concerning returning the analyzer can be found in the standard operating instructions C79000-G52xx-C in Section 9.1 "Returned deliveries".
