Detailed Information Great, that you have decided to go on a diving safari with us. We are already looking forward to welcoming you on board and to enjoy many exciting moments together with you. A diving safari is one of the most impressive experience in a diver's life. Sleeping, eating and relaxing on board while cruising around on the open sea is a dream of every diver. Waking up to breathtaking sunrises, jumping into the turquoise waters and diving down 3 to 4 times daily and when returning to share the experience with the sunbathers and bookworms at the 3 delicious meals made by our cook really makes for a terrific atmosphere. Not infrequently, close friendships develop on board our yacht. Below are detailed information about our safaris and the daily operations on board. If there are still questions, you can always contact the Ocean Window Team via , phone or skype. Transfer / Travel Assistance / Procedure At the airport of Hurghada or Marsa Alam you will be greeted by our representative (Ayman or Walid) who will be waiting to distribute the tourist visa for about 30 Euros. You can also get it at the cashier counter a bit cheaper, but then long queuing is usually the result. Please let us know if you want the visa service of our representatives at the airport. They will also support you at the baggage claim and bring you to the transfer bus. If we do not receive information from you that you want the service, we assume that you do not need this. In this case, the driver of your transfer is waiting outside in front of the airport and brings you to the bus or limousine, which will drive you to the yacht. Inside the airport and as well as in front of the airport, our representatives will make identify themselves with an Ocean Window sign. For some time, the Egyptian government has been talking about raising the cost of the visa. So far, no decision has been made! In the case of changes, we will inform you in time. Upon arrival on board, shoes are deposited. Here they are no longer needed. Afterwards each guest will receive a refreshing welcome drink and then the check-in formalities are at hand. When check-in is finished every guest will be assigned a cabin and in most cases a roommate to get to know. Following room assignment, it is now time for the guests to pick a spot to pack out their dive equipment and set it up for a function check. This way we have the opportunity to rectify any problems or missing or malfunctioning equipment, because once we out at sea, the shops are far away. A short list of what you ll need can be found further down in this document. Should you need dive equipment (rental equipment); please let us know as soon as possible, at least 14 days before departure. We will help you to get the right equipment. ( After the first welcome briefing by our guide, which contains the most important rules and precautions on board, the rest of the day or evening can be tailored to the wishes of the guests. Maybe you enjoy a little stroll through the harbor or make yourself comfortable on board. The next morning, we usually start very early and leave the harbor. However, the exact time is determined by the goodwill of the coast guard. The day on a safari boat is marked by the alternation between diving, eating and relaxing.
The first briefing takes place very early in the morning, shortly after getting up. You are welcome to enjoy your morning tea or coffee while listening to the first briefing. On a safari, diving will definitely not come up short. Depending on the route, fifteen to twenty-two dives per week are possible. A wonderful end of a diving day is certainly the night dive. On a night dive you can see many sea creatures from another perspective or discover a lot which you will not see during the day. Night dives are unfortunately not allowed on marine park reefs (Brothers, Daedalus, Rocky and Zabargad). That the guests, through changes in thermal homeostasis due to frequent diving, in the very rare case lose weight, has to do with our delicious buffets that our top cook prepares and lays out every day for guests to eat. Got all you ll need? The following items and documents are a requirement for every guest. A passport copy (important) required for the coast guard manifest (this is for every guest even nondivers) Dive Card (Certification) Log Book Certificate of good health or dive health check (on board a questionnaire about health conditions must be completed by every guest on board but it is in the best interest of everyone to have completed a health examination before diving on a live-a-board). Dive computer SMB (Surface marker device) (per person, not per Buddy Team) Wetsuit Jacket (BCD) Regulator and octopus also perhaps extra mouth pieces and o-rings. Mask, snorkel and fins with booties or closed fins Torch for the night dive Replacement straps for the fins Towels (two will be provided but they are often wet) Clothing; T-shirts, shorts but we also recommend a sweatshirt with a hood or even a woolen cap for cool and windy evenings Sun screen, sunglasses, headpiece Swimwear
A few Rules on board Your safety is our top priority! Please observe the following rules to ensure a smooth and accident-free tour. Smoking is strictly prohibited everywhere inside the ship and near the filling station. Take off your street shoes. The safest way on board is to walk barefooted. Do not enter the salon or the cabins with a wet suit or swimwear risk of slipping. Close the portholes (windows) in the cabin while cruising or when there are big waves. Do not throw any toilet paper or other objects into the toilet or sinks. Do not throw cigarette butts or other trash into the sea. Please show consideration for the moral values: Do not lie topless on deck. Please respect the country and its customs and norms. Diving Rules Please drink enough water (rule of thumb: one liter per dive). No alcohol before diving! A check dive is compulsory (during the first regular dive). Only dives within the non-decompression limits are allowed. An own dive computer and a safety buoy (SMB) is compulsory. Nitrox is only provided to certified Nitrox divers The maximum depth is 40 meters. We dive only in buddy teams. At the end of each dive, a safety stop at 5m for 3 minutes is mandatory. Dive responsible and within your personal abilities. To protect yourself from injuries and to protect the underwater world please refrain from touching anything underwater. Make sure that your buoyancy is always controlled. Observe the underwater world at a reasonable distance and don't frighten the animals. Don't take anything with you apart from good memories and pictures. Don't leave anything behind you except bubbles. Compliance with these rules is for your own safety and the safety of the entire group. The instructions of the dive guide and the crew are always followed during the diving activities. In case of obstruction of the diving operation or blatant violation of these rules the dive guide can ban guests from diving. Lost booking services will then be borne by the safari participant. The cabins must be vacated on the day of departure until around 10 o'clock, but you can still make yourself comfortable on the various decks. If you would like to enjoy some pool life after the week at sea, we are happy to organize a day use at the nearby harbour hotel. This can be discussed and booked on board. Barely out at sea... the safari is already coming to an end. Upon arrival at the port, the guides will inform you the times for the return transfer to the airport. The last evening in the harbor, you can do how you wish. Do not be surprised if the first steps ashore are a bit strange. But quickly your sense of balance gets used again to the solid ground under your feet.
FAQ from A to Z Arrival at the airport Upon arrival at Hurghada or Marsa Alam International Airport either one of us or a representative of Ocean Window will be there to greet you. You will be driven to the yacht in an air-conditioned bus. Transfer times are as follow, from Hurghada airport to; Hurghada Marina approx. 10min.; Hurghada airport and Port Ghalib approx. 3hrs. From Marsa Alam airport to Port Ghalib 10 min. Arrival on Board M/Y Ocean Window Welcome on Board First thing on board is to take off your shoes and forget about them. They will be stowed away and brought back on the last day of the tour. Next you will be greeted by our crew and a welcome drink. Proceeding this come the check-in formalities. After check-in everyone can go to stow their belongings. First find a dive box under the benches on the dive platform and unload your dive gear there first and then proceed to your cabin. When this is done we can be assured that all material is on board. We call this procedure Gearing Up. When all guests are on board then there will be a briefing about the boat and further information. Bathrooms and Toilets Please do not deposit any toilet paper or sanitary items of any kind into the toilets or sinks. This can lead to blockages in the wastewater system s reservoir. Please use the waste bins. These are emptied daily from the cabin team. For what is the hose in near my toilet? In many countries where trees are few or non-existent, hence no toilet paper, it is used for spraying down one s backside as a substitute for toilet paper. You are welcome to try it out and use it. Beverages During the trip all non-alcoholic drinks are free of charge. Alcoholic drinks and Nespresso are available for a fee. Additional price list see here: Check Dive Yes, every diver, even the most experienced, has to do a buoyancy check with us. For the experienced divers among you this seem a little ridiculous, but we want to invest this few minutes that it takes to check and then dive down with the right amount of weight and the knowledge that everyone will enjoy the dive with working equipment. Check-in / Check-out On the day of arrival, the cabins are ready from about 3pm. On the day of departure, we kindly ask our guests to vacate the cabins between 9am and 10am so the crew can prepare them for the new guests. If possible, you can stay on board until the transfer bus picks you up. If the time is too short between your departure and the arrival of the new guests, the last hours may have to be spent in a café. For those who wish to relax and swim a little, there is the possibility to organized "day use" in a nearby hotel. At the end of the tour this can discussed with the guides. Climate and clothes The Red Sea has a dry desert climate. Especially during the summer months, you can expect temperatures of around 35 C during the day. In the winter months it cools down in the evenings. Casual clothes and a warm sweater are enough for cool evenings. But do not forget to protect your ears (cap). We ask you not to sit in the salon in swimwear or damp clothing.
Costs Here are a few things for which you might still have some cash with you (preferably Euro): Beer or wine, as alcoholic drinks ensure additional fees on the boat Nespresso Souvenirs and things on shore Local fees (depending on route and tour) Course fees and/or rental equipment Tip for the crew Crew and dive guides Most members of the crew speak English or even a bit of German. Do not hesitate to ask the crew and guides about anything that interests you. They will be willing to show you everything and help where they can. Should you have problems with any member, speak to our office or the Guide Manager Abdo. Ocean Window Egypt (Abdo): +20 (0) Ocean Window Office Switzerland: +41 (0) Our dive guides take care of your safety during the dive safari, both above water and underwater. On request there is the possibility to organize your own private dive guide. This is especially important if you are unsure about being able to dive safely with your level of experience. Please contact us for more information or questions. Crew Tip Tipping is a courtesy to the crew. If you think the crew worked well for you then it s a nice touch. Egypt is a poor country and we should do it in the right relation. Reasonable are about 4-5 Euros per crew member per week. On board, an average of 9 crew members and 2 dive guides take care of you during the safari. So, depending on your satisfaction, between 44 and 55 Euros per week are appropriate for the crew. But of course, this is up to each guest. You can also give something to the individual or the entire group. Currency in Egypt The national currency is the Egyptian Pound (EGP. Most of the places in Egypt you can pay in Euro. For the current exchange rate please refer to the internet. Decompression chamber On our trips, the D.E.C:O. International (Diving Emergency Center Organization) insurance can be purchased, which can be used for the decompression chamber in diving accidents. This insurance costs 6 Euros and is valid 4 weeks from the date of issue. Dives Depending on the route and weather conditions, usually 3 to 4 dives per day are possible. In the Marine parks (Brothers Daedalus Rocky Island Zabargad) no night dives are allowed. Dive Accidents Of course, our crew is equipped and trained for first aid. For diving emergencies, the yacht has several oxygen tanks with accessories and first aid kit. We recommend making a special dive insurance for rescue, decompression chamber and home transport in case of a diving accident. You can also take a insurance for the costs of a decompression chamber on-site. The costs is 6 Euros for 30 days.
Dive briefings Please take the briefings seriously and be present, especially at the safety briefings! The briefings are important to tell you what is to expect on the next dive. Then everyone can decide if they want to dive or relax. The dive guide and buddy teams can be better and more efficiently organized this way. The first morning briefing usually takes place very early in the morning! But with a cup of coffee in the hand, everything is half so bad. Diving courses Yes, it is possible. It needs to be declared by booking and not every course is possible on every tour. If you are a non-diver, you can enjoy the week as well snorkeling. Dive equipment For the dive equipment there is a box on the dive platform for every diver. In these boxes belongs your weight belt, mask, snorkel, boots. etc. but not your dive computer or torches. For these items it has extra storage space on the platform. Wetsuits should be hung up on the hangers and there is for everyone a 12-liter DIN or INT valve connection aluminum tank. Signal buoys and dive computers are mandatory for every diver. (see also rental equipment) Dive Site Limitations In addition to the normal rules for each diver, divers in the Red Sea should have at least 30 logged dives (Brothers and Daedalus 50 dives) in the logbooks or talk to us in advance it the tour is suitable with fewer dives. Under certain circumstances, it would be appropriate, or there is the possibility that you can dive with your own private guide and so even under the prescribed number of dives, you have safe dives. Electricity Minimum 220V / maximum 240V. Alternating current (AC) and European sockets. For security reasons it is not allowed to charge torches or cameras in your cabin. There are charging points provided on the dive deck. Vaccinations The vaccination regulations are subject to constant change. For a reliable information your family doctor is the right contact person. In general, adequate vaccination against tetanus and hepatitis A/B is recommended. Language The crew on board speaks English and some German and of course Arabic. Logbooks, certifications, etc. We need from you, your logbook and certifications on board to look briefly at your experience level. Also recommended is a medical certificate. This should not be older than 2 years for a person under 40 and one year for someone over 40. In any case, you must complete and sign a health form on board. Music Of course, you can connect your MP3 or mobile phone via bluetooth to our loudspeakers. Just ask the guide or the crew, they can assist you with this.
Non-Diver Of course non-divers are welcome by us. As each route is different and some do not allow much opportunity for snorkeling, please contact us before booking. We are happy to advise you. Recreation, relaxation and fun are of course always included! Nitrox For certified Nitrox Divers Nitrox is for free. As Nitrox is offered for free, it is not guaranteed by booking. If for unforeseeable reasons it is not possible for us to deliver Nitrox, there is no entitlement to a reduction of the travel price. For safety reasons (often deep dives) and depending on utilization Nitrox is dipped with approx. 29%. Payment on board / board currency On board, we do not accept credit cards or cheques! Please take enough cash with you. Our currency on board is Euro or Swiss Francs. Passport Data and arrival and departure times All data and information requested by us must be available no later than 14 days before the start of the journey. Please note: In case of incorrect or late submitted data, various complications can occur. For example: If the passport number in the permit is incorrect, the Coast Guard may refuse to leave the port. Ocean Window Ltd. assumes no liability for incorrectly submitted information and data. The resulting consequences and additional expenses may be charged separately. Also make sure that your passport is still min. 6 months valid. Please bring a copy of your passport with you. Portholes All cabins on the yacht have portholes. Please remember that these are closed while driving or in rough sea conditions. Rental Equipment and spare parts On board is little rental equipment. You can rent the equipment from us but be sure to contact us at least 14 days before departure. (Price list: ) Attention wetsuits: Due to limited storage space we do not have a large selection on-board. It is recommended to try on the wetsuit at a dive shop in your home area and then rent it from them. The size of the dive equipment specified in the order are binding. (see also diving equipment) Rescue facilities Rescue facilities on board are life jackets (2 in each cabin), life rafts and several life savers. You will find fire alarms and fire extinguishers in all cabins, in the salon and engine room for emergencies. We will inform you after arrival on the yacht about the exact location and handling of the rescue equipment. As a rule, in the case of an emergency, everyone has to get onto the upper deck as quickly as possible. Sea sickness Could happen to anyone. Mostly, the symptoms lessen after one day. But we always have some useful medications with us but if you need special medications for this, you must bring this with you. Shopping Depending on the harbor there is the possibility for shopping. Hurghada is for sure worth strolling through and Port Ghalib s livelihood is awaking evermore.
Showers The freshwater tanks are constantly refilled. Nevertheless, you should keep in mind that we have limited capacity on the boat. Please do not use the freshwater wasteful. The dive equipment should and will be cleaned at the end of the tour before departure. Sleeping on deck Especially in the hot summer months it is wonderful to sleep under the stars and to enjoy the mild breeze. Yes, by us you can use the blankets from the cabins. Take a blanket out of the cabin with you just be sure to wipe off the mattresses outside with a towel first and be informed that it can get a little damp from the humidity. But in the morning the blankets need to be back in the cabins. Towels A shower and a sun towel per person are in each cabin. Visa In the airport of Hurghada or Marsa Alam we have our representatives (Ayman or Walid) which will be waiting to greet guests and distribute the tourist visa for currently 30 Euros. You can also get it at the cashier counter, but then long queuing is usually the result. We kindly ask you to inform us if the visa service at the airport is required. They will also support you at the baggage claim and bring you to the transfer bus. In case we do not receive any notification, we assume that airport assistance is not desired. In this case the driver will be waiting outside the airport with an Ocean Window sign to collect the guests and bring them to the bus, which drives you to the yacht. Inside and in front of the airport, our caregivers make themselves identifiable with an Ocean Window sign. For some time, the Egyptian government has been talking about raising the cost of the visa. So far, however, there is neither an official notification, nor a deadline. Should the entry requirements or their costs increase, we will inform accordingly. Transfers Of course, the transfer from the nearest airport to the yacht and back is organized for you and included in the trip price (for example: Marsa Alam airport Port Ghalib Marsa Alam airport). As we try to organize multiple arrivals and departures in one transfer whenever possible, there is a max. of 1 hour waiting time at the airport. Transfers from the not-nearest airport are organized by us but must be calculated with a long-distance fee: (for example: Hurghada airport Port Ghalib Hurghada airport). The current surcharge you can see on our additional price list: Individual transfers, e.g. from / to hotel, can be organized. The prices vary from hotel to hotel. Please ask us for more information. Unfortunately, lately there have been incidents that airport employees are demanding money to stow luggage on the bus. If you need help with your luggage, you can get help from these airport employees. An appropriate amount would then be 1 euro per piece of luggage. If this gentleman really causes you any problems, we would be glad if you would report this to us. Unfortunately, we are not in control of airport employees, but we might have the chance together with our transfer company to try to prevent this from happening in the future. Wetsuit The water temperature in the Red Sea vary between 21 to 31 C, depending on the area and season. But you have to keep in mind that with 3 to 4 dives each day the body cools down quickly. We therefore recommend between 5 and 7mm all year round and advise against a shorty for safety reasons! Gloves are not allowed.
Tender We have two tenders (zodiacs) for safety but also depending on the dive site we dive from the tender or get brought back on board with them. A few funny but good tips! You may have seen these humorous guidelines or a version of them over the years. The original author is unknown, but the point they make is a valuable one. Do not expect to find things to be like at home. You left home to find things different. Do not take anything too seriously. A carefree mind is a vital to a good vacation. Do not let other travelers get on your nerves. You paid good money to enjoy yourself. Do not forget: you are a representative of your country at all times. Try not to worry because he or she who worries will not have fun. Remember that few things in life are fatal. As a stranger in a strange land, be prepared to do as its people do. Do not judge all people of a country by one individual who has given you trouble. Remember that you are a guest and those travelers who treat their hosts with respect will be treated likewise.
