Infection Control: Nosocomial infection continues to be a leading cause of preventable death in U.S. Hospitals. Body fluids are a chief source of infection. Properly controlling them with good technology reduces the very high cost of unwanted and unneeded infections, while prolonging the life of critical care suction equipment. One very important preventive measure is the use of an Overflow Safety Trap between the vacuum regulator and the collection system. NFPA, the codes and standards organization for medical pipeline systems, recommends the use of an Overflow Trap on ALL vacuum regulators (NFPA 99, 2002, C ). The purpose of this key safety and infection-control accessory is to prevent flooding of vacuum regulators and pipeline systems and to become a physical barrier for bacteria and other pathogens. Despite improvements in disposable collection system shut-off valves, filters, etc., accidents continue to occur. These failures result from canisters falling over, accidental failure of failsafe shut-off valves, and practitioners accidentally by-passing the collection system in emergencies. Because traps stop body fluids before they get to the vacuum regulators, they reduce the opportunity for spread of contamination. And they do this for practitioners, patients, and technicians, both those who set up and take apart these systems in patient care areas, and the biomed and maintenance staff who maintain and repair the vacuum regulators, wall outlets and pipeline system. Suctioning body fluids, blood and irrigation solutions through vacuum regulators, wall outlets and pipeline systems results in clogging which reduces air flow and compromises suction power. The Overflow Safety Trap not only prevents bolus overflow but also removes aerosols by centrifugal force. Risk of cross contamination and nosocomial infection increases when body fluids enter vacuum regulators, wall outlets and pipeline systems.
