2 V10K GAS FEED SYSTEM V10k automatic control Starting with the invention of the world s first chlorinator over 80 years ago, Wallace & Tiernan continues to be the leader in the disinfection of potable water, wastewater, industrial water, process water and swimming pools. The V10k chlorinator represents the culmination of the collective experience from Wallace & Tiernan centres around the world. The result is an efficient, lowcapacity gas feeder for up to 15 kg/h with a standardised flexible design that provides a variety of configurations. The V10k gas feed system consists of the following components: Vacuum regulator mounted at the gas supply Wall-mounted gas control unit with a rotameter for indication of feed rate, differential pressure regulating valve, and vacuum gauge for operating vacuum Water operated injector that provides the vacuum source to drive the entire system Using automatic switchover regulators, the V10k provides an uninterrupted supply of gas to maintain continuous disinfection treatment. 3 TECHNICAL FEATURES V-NOTCH FOR EXACT GAS FLOW CONTROL The V-notch design ensures high accuracy The V-notch control orifice, field-proven in hundreds of thousands of installations around the world, provides reliable, consistent gas feed at any capacity requirements. It consists of a precision grooved plug that slides through an annular seat. Any position of the plug in the seat results in a specific orifice size and a corresponding feed rate. The large size and configuration of the orifice resists fouling from contaminants in the gas supply. This results in accurate gas flow control and excellent repeatability. Control of this V-notch can be from simple manual operation up to sophisticated automatic control schemes. EASY READABILITY The use of large size rotameters provides the highest degree of resolution for accurate indication of feed rate, unmatched by any other manufacturer in a similar capacity gas feed system. The large scale on the rotameter combined with the white background of the mounting frame enhance the resolution. ALL-VACUUM OPERATION ENSURES HIGHEST SAFETY The complete V10k gas system operates under a vacuum. A vacuum regulating valve at the gas supply container reduces gas pressure to a vacuum at once. Dry gas moves through the system to the injector under vacuum. If at any time a leak occurs from a loose fitting, or an accidentally cut gas line or tubing, the loss of vacuum causes the system to shut down without releasing gas to the atmosphere. Scale shown in actual size CONVENIENT, WALL MOUNTED DESIGN The V10k system is designed for the operator s convenience. Unlike cylinder mounted gas feeders, the components of the control unit are mounted securely on a wall mounting panel. This provides a stable control platform that simplifies the installation of gas and electrical lines and protects the fragile rotameter from constant handling every time the gas supply is changed. UNMATCHED SERVICEABILITY Open panel mounted components provide for servicing without the need to remove the entire unit from the wall. There is adequate room around the components so that each can be easily taken apart and serviced on the panel. For most routine service requirements, no tools are required. 3

4 OPERATION The V10k gas feed system operates under a vacuum that is produced at the injector and transmitted through the control unit to the vacuum regulating valve located at the gas supply. The vacuum opens the diaphragm operated vacuum regulator and allows the gas to flow toward the control unit. Gas next passes through the rotameter and the V-notch orifice, where the feed rate is controlled manually, or by an automatic positioner. After passing the V-notch orifice, the gas flows through the differential pressure regulating valve and via the vacuum suction line to the injector. At the injector, the metered gas is dissolved in the water stream. The resultant solution is discharged to the point of application. VACUUM REGULATOR Vacuum regulating valves equipped with a pressure gauge and mounted directly on the gas supply containers immediately reduce the pressurised gas to the operating vacuum. The regulator is optionally available with automatic switchover for capacities up to 10 kg/h. SAFETY UNIT The safety vent valve and the vacuum safety valve are combined in the safety unit: It opens the injector only at the correct vacuum level. It additionally protects against a possible pressure build-up in the vacuum system. The integral safety vent valve will release any overpressure to the atmosphere in the case of a failure of the vacuum regulator. VACUUM CONTACT PRESSURE GAUGE Will release an alarm in the case of a too high vacuum (gas cylinder empty), or a too low vacuum (insufficient vacuum developed by injector). It can also be used to initiate changeover from empty to full gas cylinders. ROTAMETER Large scale rotameter tubes provide clear and accurate indication of the feed rate in g/h or kg/h. DIFFERENTIAL REGULATING VALVE Maintains the proper vacuum differential across the V-notch orifice for consistent feed rate, regardless of changes in the operating vacuum, that e.g. can occur through pressure fluctuations in the operating water. 5 ELECTRIC POSITIONER For automatic control, this positioner includes the following features: Manual changeover from manual to automatic control mode by pulling the knob to disengage the drive motor 3 sets of volt-free contacts for system interface Manual; MAX position; MIN position Internal feedback potentiometer VACUUM GAUGE Provides easy check of the operating vacuum and injector function. INJECTORS Fixed throat injectors create a powerful operating vacuum to drive the V10k system. Three injector sizes are available: 3/4 for capacities up to 4 kg/h 1 for capacities up to 10 kg/h 2 for capacities up to 15 kg/h The 3/4 and 1 injectors feature: Built-in double check valves for protection against backflooding The main check valve consists of a spring-loaded diaphragm with a spherical seat for positive sealing A spring-loaded poppet check provides additional safety Injectors can be disassembled for service without removal from the wall Anti-syphon arrangement for negative backpressure applications Gas supply 1 Injector 3/4 Injector 5

These can be specified at the time of order or upgraded in the field as operating conditions change. 7 METHODS OF CONTROL THE FOLLOWING CONTROL MODES ARE AVAILABLE: Manual control Start / stop- or program control through injector water operation (solenoid valve) Flow proportional control utilising a SCU controller Compound loop control through a PCU-fuzzy process controller Simple ratio control through a 4 20 ma input Chlorine residual control through a MFA Depolox 4 or any other feed-back controller AUTOMATIC CONTROLLERS SCU Signal Conditioning Unit SCU SIGNAL CONDITIONING UNIT The microprocessor based SCU provides for the exact control of the V10k in response to variable flow conditions. The dosage factor can be set from %. Menu assistance allows for simple and user-friendly operation. The SCU can also provide for remote manual control of the V10k. The SCU can be mounted locally at the V10k, or remotely. For detailed information quote: SCU TI DE PCU-FUZZY PROCESS CONTROL UNIT The microprocessor based PCU-fuzzy is used for the following automatic control modes of the V10k gas feed system: Flow-proportional control: chlorine feed proportional to water flow Direct residual control: chlorine feed to maintain an adjustabled chlorine concentration (set-point control) Compound-loop: combination of flow-proportional and direct residual control The control mode, as well as the system set-point and other operation parameters, are selected via the keypad. Ten main menu selections allow the easy selection of all inputs / outputs, alarm messages and calibration / diagnostics routines. Communication with other supervisory or control systems is provided by an integral serial RS485 interface for transmission of all operation parameters.
