1 The PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is the gateway to becoming a PADI Diving Instructor. As the course name indicates this is about developing you as an instructor and teacher, not as a diver - let's face it - you're already a Divemaster! The exact length of the course depends on the number of candidates but typically this is an eight day course. The course consists of classroom presentations covering such things as General Standards and Guidelines, Legal Responsibility and Risk Management and Adaptive Teaching together with the opportunity to learn how to teach dive theory using the prescriptive teaching method. You'll also sit five separate examination papers with a minimum 75% pass rate. Pool work also makes up a large part of the course as you learn how to brief "student" divers before assessing and correcting dive skills performed by others - you'll also continually be given skill circuits to perform to ensure you are well practiced at the PADI Open Water skills circuit. The final part is teaching in open water where you will be tasked with teaching and assessing skills from the PADI Open Water, Adventures in Diving, Rescue Diver and Peak Performance Buoyancy courses. As the IDC does not teach you any skills or theory it is important that you are up to scratch before you start. Most of our Instructor Candidates elect to participate in our IDC Preparation Course for this reason. What's Involved? The IDC develops the leadership abilities of individuals who already possess instructor-level dive theory knowledge and role model demonstration skills and rescue skills. The IDC shows candidates how to implement and apply the PADI system in confined water, class room and open water environments. Most importantly, candidates learn how to be confident at providing professional training that is fun and safe for all involved. PADI Standards require the IDC to be conducted over a minimum of 7 days. Dive Academy's IDC is conducted over 8 days (AI, EFRI and OWSI combined) with the option of taking the IDC preparation course prior. This allows our candidates to gain the maximum amount of training and professional guidance in their personal development towards becoming a PADI Instructor. All IDCs begin with independent learning and preparation at home. In order to gain the most from

2 the Instructor Development Course, candidates are expected to complete all knowledge reviews from the IDC Candidate Workbook prior the start of the IDC. What You Learn During the course you'll learn how to apply the PADI System of Education by presenting at least: Two confined water teaching presentations Two knowledge development presentations One open water teaching presentation integrating two skills You will demonstrate competence at Performing all 24 dive skills listed on the Skill Evaluation slate. Performing a facedown, non-stop swim for 800 metres using a mask, snorkel and fins. During the course you'll need to demonstrate competency in dive theory by passing a fivepart theory exam scoring at least 75% on each part. Pre-requisites To qualify for training as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, you must: 1. Be certified as a PADI Divemaster or a PADI Assistant Instructor or be an instructor in good standing with another training organisation for at least six months (check with a PADI Course Director or Contact Us for qualifying credentials.) 2. Be at least 18 years old 3. Be certified as a diver for at least six months 4. Have 60 logged dives that include experience in night, deep and navigation diving to participate in the Instructor Development Course. You'll need 100 logged dives to take the Instructor Exams 5. Have proof of CPR and First Aid training within the last 24 months. The Emergency First Response course meets this requirement 6. Be fit for diving and submit a Medical Statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months What you can teach After becoming an Open Water Scuba Instructor, you will be able to conduct the entire range of PADI programs from Discover Scuba Diving up to Divemaster. You may also choose to acquire

5 specialty instructor ratings in areas of interest, such as Deep Diver or Enriched Air Diver (see IDC price list). How to prepare for your IDC Academics: 1. Complete all knowledge reviews in the IDC Candidate Workbook before the course starts. 2. Study Diving Knowledge Workbook with the Encyclopaedia for theory preparation. 3. Complete the Theory Exams in the Candidate Workbook to test your knowledge. Practical: 1. Practice continuously snorkelling 800 metres wearing swimsuit, mask, snorkel, fins only 2. Practice all PADI Open Water Diver Course skills to demonstration quality 3. If you have not practiced demonstration of your skills for a while we urge you to contact us to arrange attendance of an Open Water Course at no extra charge, please allow sufficient time for skills practice prior to commencement of the IDC. Administration: 1. Obtain all required materials (we can order these for you if required) 2. Obtain all required diving equipment (special discounts apply for paid-up IDC candidates) 3. Ensure you meet all the pre-requisites for the IDC IDC Preparation Course Dive Academy's IDC Preparation program is an optional 2-day course intended to assist PADI Instructor candidates in honing their skills and knowledge to perfection in preparation for the PADI IDC. The course is for candidates who want or need extra practice and for those who would like to be better prepared for the IE. In essence, the IDC Preparation program serves as insurance towards success in both the IDC and IE. (Normally 199)

6 Do I Need to attend the IDC preparation course? "No, although it is highly recommended!" It is important to note that an IDC assumes that you are completely comfortable with all confined water skills and can perform these to demonstration standard and that you are able to tie the various knots (these are now assigned at the examination) and know your theory. The IDC will not teach you any of this and the preparation course is a great way of working with our staff instructors to focus on any areas you may want to perfect before the IDC starts. Instructor Examination (IE) The IE is a 2 day evaluative program that tests the instructor candidates teaching ability, dive theory knowledge, water skill level, and understanding of the PADI system, attitude, and professionalism. *PADI IEs are standardised evaluations that are conducted by Instructor Examiners from PADI International offices. Once you meet the performance requirements, you will become certified as a PADI OPEN WATER SCUBA INSTRUCTOR. Prerequisites to enrol in the Instructor Examination you must: a. Successfully complete an IDC within 12 months of the start date of the IE b. Have documentation of at least 100 logged dives including experience in deep, night and navigation diving c. Present an Instructor Certificate of Completion that has both the IDC completion date and dive experience sections signed by a PADI Course Director or present an IE Certificate of Participation indicating previous attendance at an IE and which modules need to be repeated

7 d. Present an IE Enrolment form with appropriate IE fee e. Present a Medical Statement form and examination conducted in the past 12 months indicating that you are fit to dive. The physician signing the form is not to be the applicant Performance Requirements To successfully complete an IE you must: 1. Score 75 % or higher an all five sections of the dive theory exam. Only one make-up on one of the sections is allowed. 2. Score 75% or higher on the systems, standards and procedures exam. No make ups are allowed 3. Score 3.5 or higher on an assigned knowledge development teaching presentation. One make up presentation is allowed. 4. Score 3.4 or higher on an assigned confined water teaching presentation. One make up presentation is allowed. 5. Score an average of 3.5 or higher on two assigned open water teaching presentations. No make ups are allowed. 6. Demonstrate competence in the rescue of a scuba diving victim simulating unconscious/non-breathing at the surface. One make up is allowed. 7. Score a 3.0 or higher on five skill demonstration. In addition, score a total of 17 points or more on the entire skill circuit. One make-up of all five skills is allowed only if one skill demonstration scores less than 3.0, or less than 17 total points is scored. Scores of 1.0 or 2.0 on two or more skills initially or not passing the make-up will disqualify you from certification at the IE. 8. Demonstrate competence with all dive skills during confined and open water sessions. 9. Demonstrate professional behaviour, attitude, and actions during all phases of the IE. 10.
