2 Safety Precautions The Tansley Associates Environmental Sciences Inc. bypass odorizer you have purchased has been designed and built to give years of dependable service. But like many things you buy, it has to be installed with care and properly maintained. Please read and understand all of the written material shipped with this odorizer. If you have any questions, call one of our qualified staff members at 1(888) SAFETY PRECAUTIONS There are certain precautions which must be taken when dealing with any piece of equipment. These odorizers, when properly used and maintained, safeguard people and property against fires, possible asphyxiations, explosions, etc. by warning them of the presence of natural gas. Below are precautions recommended you take to protect everyone and everything around the odorizer. If you confront a problem not mentioned below, we would appreciate immediate communication. This will allow us to help you, our valued customer. Is the odorizer you are installing the proper size for your service? If it is too small, it may not odorize the gas sufficiently. If it is too large, reading the amount of odorant being used may be difficult or you may over-odorize. If you are not certain, stop right now and check. B Series odorizers are used for flow rates up to eight million standard cubic feet per hour (SCFH) based on an absorption rate of 2.0 lbs of odorant per mmscf gas. For the B Series odorizers a small amount of the mainstream natural gas is bypassed though the odorizing unit. Odorant laden gas is returned to the mainstream where it then mixes with the un-odorized gas. The illustration below (odorizer installation schematic) shows that an orifice (a partially-closed gate valve, or even a slightly closed full port ball valve) installed in the gas main can provide the differential pressure required to operate the odorizer. For the average installation a maximum differential pressure of 30 to 80 of column water is sufficient to operate all B Series odorizers at their rated capacities. For calculating a closer estimate of the differential pressure needed versus the appropriate precision control valve setting for your particular service contact Tansley Associates. Note: precision valve control can be lost if the differential is too high or if the odorizer to large for the application. Once the proper differential pressure is established, the desired intensity of odor is fine tuned by adjustments of the precision control valve. Dual bypass odorant installations allow for continuous odorization while completing a fill or maintenance on an operating gas odorization system.
Before installing an odorizer, or any part connected to it, read the directions. If you cannot find any directions or do not understand the directions provided, contact Tansley Associates. Comply with all of your company s safety rules along with all local, county or parish, state, provincial, national, and/or international laws which apply, such as CSA, OSHA, EPA, DOT, TC, etc. Before installing an odorizer or any part thereof, inspect everything involved very thoroughly to make sure all is in order and all bolts and connections are secure. Every precaution, including but not limited to, elevation of the in/out connections above the main pipeline, should be taken to insure that both liquids and solids are removed and prevented from entering the odorizer. Solids can restrict or plug small orifices and openings, thereby preventing odorization. Liquids can settle on top of, or below, the surface or even mix with the odorant causing masking and/or blinding off, or saturation of wicks, preventing or reducing odorization of the gas. Every odorizer should be checked frequently to see if this has occurred. If it has, the odorizer must be evacuated of all liquid, new wicks installed, and the odorizer recharged with fresh odorant. A liquid knock out pot may be required if you anticipate wet gas or signs of wet gas appear during odorant audits. The wicks should be inspected and changed on a regular basis. If plugging of the precision control valve occurs, and it cannot be cleared or cleaned out, the precision valve should be replaced following all appropriate safety guidelines. (OSHA, EPA, CSA, etc ) Once the odorizer has been properly piped into the bypass line and the Positive Action Indicator has been screwed on securely following the supplied directions, a nitrogen pressure test should be performed. A thorough nitrogen purge is one way to do it. As pressure builds in the odorizer, all possible places where gas could escape should be checked using soapy water. If a leak is found, close the isolation valves connecting the odorizer to the main line. Then, vent all the gas from the bypass portion, according to proper safety procedures, via a flare specifically designed for the purpose, until there is no pressure in the odorizer. Fix the leak, or leaks, then repeat the process until no leaks can be found. At least once a month, each odorizer should be checked for leaks using soapy water. If any leaks are found they should be fixed immediately, following all safety rules. Tansley Associates Environmental Sciences experience dictates that each odorant station be protected from tampering and vandalism. Caution or danger signs should be posted.

6 Positive Action Indicator Installation The Tansley Associates Environmental Sciences Positive Action Indicator is a sealed unit (no leak) assembly designed and manufactured to replace the tubular glass design furnished with all W series odorizers and storage tanks marketed previously by Tansley Associates Environmental Sciences. The only open connection on the Positive Action Indicator is the # NPT connection that screws directly onto the 1 NPT riser on top of the B and W series odorizers and storage tanks. The Positive Action Indicator may have been furnished to you for installation on your new Odorizer, your new odorant storage tank, or as a replacement assembly for installation on an existing W series odorizer or odorant storage tank. For installation, read the following. Instructions for Installation on a New W Series Odorizer or Odorant Storage Tank Your Positive Action Indicator was shipped to you with your new odorizer or storage tank protected inside a plastic pipe sleeve with a cap glued onto it. When you remove the Positive Action Indicator from the plastic pipe sleeve, it is now necessary for you to go to the odorizer or tank and remove the temporary protective pipe extension on the 1 riser and discard it. Upon removing this protective cover, you will find a stem about 3 / 16 in diameter protruding above the 1 NPT pipe on the odorizer or tank. This stem is connected to a float inside the vessel which rises or drops, with a change in liquid level. Using Teflon tape or pipe dope, coat the 1 NPT male threads on the vessel riser. (DO NOT dope the 1 NPT female threads on the indicator assembly) Now, screw the indicator connection on the vessel connection and tighten with an 18 Stilon Wrench. Instructions for Installation on an Existing W Series Odorizer or Odorant Storage Tank Your new Positive Action Indicator was shipped to you as a replacement for an existing Level Indicator Assembly. You received the new indicator packaged inside a plastic pipe sleeve with a cap glued onto it. It is necessary for you to depressurize your existing odorizer or tank, screw off the existing level indicator and seal it in an air tight container. Now that the old level indicator is off, you will observe a stem about 3 / 16 in diameter protruding above the 1 NPT pipe on the odorizer or tank.
Important** The floating indicator ring should have energized with the power capsule inside the indicator when you inserted the float stem inside the indicator body. If the vessel is new and does not have any fluids inside, the energized floating ring should be positioned about 2 above the 1 NPT indicator connection. If you are replacing an existing indicator on a vessel that is charged with some fluid, the floating ring will be at a much higher level indicating that the float inside has elevated the float stem. If the floating indicator ring DID NOT energize with the power capsule inside the indicator tube, in either of the above installation procedures, then you must lift the ring with your fingers until you feel it lock into the power capsule field. This position should be approximately 2 above the bottom of the indicator tube to the top of the tube depending on the fluid level inside the vessel. Once you are satisfied the power capsule has control over the floating ring, you can re-assemble the Indicator Ring Protector, the End Cap, the Nameplate, and the Cap Screw. Once this is completed, you can read the level of the fluid inside the vessel. This completes the Positive Action Indicator installation and you will find that as you add fluid to your odorizer storage tank, the floating indicator ring will rise as does the fluid level. Caution** Be very careful not to overfill the odorizer tank as this will cause the odorant to spill and the odor is not easily removable. In the event that a spill does occur, contact Tansley Associates Environmental Sciences and we will assist with the clean-up. Also, when you are finished with the installation and filling procedure, use the protective pipe with cap as an added measure of safety for this equipment. **Should you require further assistance please contact Tansley Associates Environmental Sciences at 1(888) **
7 Wick Odorizer Installation Schematic 4-W Odorizer
8 Wick Odorizer Installation Schematic cont d These installations are used because they allow for a continuous flow of gas, even during periods of repair or maintenance. Both setups work equally well for all continuous flow applications, but installation #1 allows for an uninterrupted flow of odorized gas. Installation #2 also allows for continuous flow, but during periods of maintenance, the gas flowing through would not be odorized.
9 Fill Procedures Requirements prior to site entry: 1) Two technicians on deliveries. 2) Masking agent on site. 3) Clean hoses in good condition. Equipment required: 1) Fire extinguisher 2) Personal protective equipment 3) 150lb relief valve 4) Spill response equipment 5) Recovery drum filled with charcoal 6) Safety manual and operational procedures on-site Specifications for Measuring: 1) Utilize customers vessel capacity specification charts 2) Dip the vessel with a tape measure 3) Read and record centimeters of odorant present in vessel 4) Calculate volume required to 80% of vessel capacity Operational Procedures for Small Tap Fill: 1) Notify client of entry into site and ask that everyone is aware that an odorant fill is to occur. 2) Walk around site and become oriented. Hose connections covered with a cloth that has masking agent on it to prevent odorant vapor release. 11) Ensure all valves from odorant supply and manifold are closed. 12) Isolate Odorant loop from gas stream. 13) Tie in bleed hose to charcoal filter from loop. 14) Tie in small tap to odorant fill supply via manifold. 15) Cover connections with Masking Agent. 16) Person A monitors Small Tap gauge as it fills, while Person B operates the odorant supply. 17) Person B slowly turns on odorant supply. 18) Person A notifies B when odorant level is ¾ filled and then proceeds to call out level. 19) Small Tap is full. 20) Turn off odorant supply from cylinder and manifold. 21) Disconnect all hoses, covering connections with Masking Agent.
10 Long Term Storage Procedure Odorant equipment is best stored in original shipping container. Keep all piping sealed with end caps. Do not store odorant vessel where contaminates would be allowed to get into piping or any other part of the vessel. 11 Third Person Intensity Reporting In addition to our small tap odorant fill services, Tansley Associates Environmental Sciences also provides a third party odor intensity audit service. Our technicians travel to your site and recharge your odorant storage tank and audit your gas stream at the end point to ensure that you meet the government standards for odorization. The government requires that fuel gas be readily detectable at 1/5 the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL). An odorant intensity audit is the key to compliance with the Gas Code regulations. Tansley Associates Environmental Sciences suggests one audit during late spring and another audit mid winter filling is done in conjunction with the audits. See the attached CSA Odorization Standards and an Odor Intensity Audit Report Form.
12 CSA Odorization Standards Taken From: CSA Standard Z Oil and Gas Pipeline Systems 4.17 Odorization Fuel gas that is to be delivered to customers through distribution lines or service lines, or to residences associated with a compressor station, and that does not naturally possess a distinctive odor to the extent that it s presence in the atmosphere is readily detectable at all gas concentrations not less than one-fifth of the lower explosive limit, shall have an odorant added to it to make it so detectable, except that odorization shall not be necessary for such gas delivered for further processing or use where the odorant would serve no useful purpose as a warning agent. Fuel gas that is to be used within compressor stations shall be so odorized, or electronic gas detectors that set off an alarm at a gas concentration of one-fifth of the lower explosive limit or less shall be used In the concentrations at which they are used, odorants shall comply with the following: a) Odorants shall not be deleterious to persons or pipeline systems. b) The products of combustion from odorants shall not be toxic, corrosive, or harmful to those materials to which the products of combustion will be exposed. c) The odorants shall not be soluble in water to an extent greater than 2.5 parts per 100 parts by mass Equipment for odorization shall introduce the odorants without wide variations in the level of odorant.
13 Odor Intensity Audit Report Form 4-W Odorizer
14 Odorant Level Tracking An important part of ensuring that your fuel gas is odorized to the code requirements is tracking the odorant usage. Changes in temperature and usage will affect the rate at which the odorant is consumed. Regularly checking the level of your odorant will allow you to arrange for fills before you run out. The Positive Action Indicator included with Tansley Associates Environmental Sciences odorizers makes it easy to check levels at a glance. The following is sample of a simple tracking sheet that will allow you to easily monitor your odorant levels. Checking the level takes only moments to complete, it can easily be added in to any normal inspection routines. Odor Intensity Audit and Recharge Record March April May June July August September October November December January February Spring / Summer Odor Audit Spring / Summer Odor Audit Fall / Winter Odor Audit Marked box indicates compliance with (CSA Z Odorization) Fuel gas must be readily detectable in the atmosphere at one-fifth of the lower explosive limit.
