2 Why Label Pipes? There are many reasons to label pipes. Sometimes the decision of whether or not to label is made solely on WHMIS, OHSA and other requirements such as Process Safety Management, Hazard Communication, IIAR, etc. However, there are other important benefits of pipe labeling including: 1. Reduced accidents (reduced workers compensation rates) 2. Reduced errors (information at the point of need) 3. Improved operating efficiency 4. Improved maintenance efficiency 5. increased training effectiveness 6. Training reinforcement 7. Improved, uniform plant appearance 8. Enhanced ISO and quality programs 1-1
3 How to Properly Label Pipes Obtain a legend list of all pipe contents in your plant (see form A, page 1-3) Collect the following data based on your current piping systems. This may require tracing lines to determine quantities and sizes. (see form B, page 1-5): Pipe Contents Outside diameter of pipe (including insulation) Quantity of markers needed as per ASME/ANSI A or the CAN/CGSB standards Pressure Temperature To/From information Location of specific legends by area (for aid in installation) Select the colour of the marker (see ASME A13.1, page 1-6, or CGSB , page 1-11, for selection) Fill in colour on Form A, page 1-3 Select the proper pipe marking material based on your plant environment (see page 1-7) Order or make pipe markers (see pages 1-10, 1-20) and Brady catalogue in the back of the manual. (note: to learn how to install pipe markers, please see pages 1-16 to 1-19) 1-2
4 Pipe Contents Legend List It is important to have a reference list of all of the various contents that flow through the piping system at your facility. This list should include all WHMIS and regulated hazardous materials as well as utilities and safety related systems like chilled water and fire protection systems. Most plants have a legend list already available. If you are not able to locate one, use the following form to generate the list. Legend Are the contents What form are the contents? Colour of (Pipe contents) Hazardous (yes/no)** Liquid/Gas/Other Marker **Hazardous means: if the line were broken, someone could be injured by the contents of the pipe. Examples: - Are the contents hot enough to cause burn? - Are the contents at a high enough pressure to cause injury? - Does the line contain any hazardous chemicals? - Are the contents flammable or explosive? - Are the contents radioactive? 7 Ordering Stock Pipe Markers ASME (ANSI) Standard for Pipe Identification ASME (ANSI) Standard A The ASME (ANSI) Standard for pipe identification is a widely used guideline in determining pipe identification requirements. The purpose of the standard is to assist in identification of hazardous materials conveyed in piping systems and their hazards when released into the environment. Pipes are defined as conduits for the transport of gases, liquids, semi-liquids or fine particulate dust. Brady Pipe Marking Systems Meet the ASME (ANSI) A Standard The Brady Pipe Marking System instantly tells you all you need to know pipe contents direction of flow whether hazardous or safe. Brady Pipe Marking Systems Meet ASME (ANSI) Size Recommendations The A standard also makes recommendations as to the size of letter height and length of colour field for various pipe diameters. These recommendations are shown in the table. Brady markers, used properly with arrows and banding tape or arrow tape, meet or exceed the standard. Outside Diameter of Pipe or Covering 3 4" to 1 1 4" 1 2" 1 1 2" to 2" 3 4" 2 1 2" to 6" 1 1 4" 8" to 10" 2 1 2" Over 10" 3 1 2" Size of Letters NOTE: For pipes less than 3 4" in diameter, a permanently legible tag is recommended. Brady Pipe Marking Systems Meet ASME (ANSI) Colour Recommendations Unmarked pipes mean danger - to both life and property. Numerous injuries have occurred through ignorance of pipe contents, particularly when outside agencies are called in under emergency conditions. CLASSIFICATION SUB CLASSIFICATION COLOUR SCHEME 1-6

10 Stock Pipe Marker Selection Guide..cont d Step 4 Look up the stock legend in your Brady-Signmark Catalogue. (Within the pipe marking section, pages of the S20 catalogue). You will need to find the subsection for your preferred pipe marker material. Select the four-digit catalogue number and substitute the marker "style" for the asterisk (*). Then, order the correct quantity for the catalogue number that corresponds to the legend and style. Arrow Tape Roll Calculation Guide Step 5 Use the guide below if you are installing self-adhesive markers (B946, Labelizer PLUS, VersaPrinter, GlobalMark or HandiMark printed markers). If you use self-adhesive pipe markers, it is important that you also apply bands of arrow tape on each end of the marker. There are three reasons for this. First, the arrows will indicate the direction of flow in the pipe. Secondly, by wrapping the arrow tape all the way around the pipe, you will get 360 visibility. And finally, if you overlap the pipe marker on each end with the arrow tape and seal the arrow tape back to itself, you will ensure that the marker will hold up for many years. It is important not to cut corners on this step in order to eliminate the need for replacing marker in a few years. If you are using a Brady system to print your own pipe markers, the system provides an option to easily print arrow tapes in the correct length for the diameter of pipe you are marking. 17 Pipe Markers - Where to Label Pipe Marker Installation 1. Markers shall be located so that they are readily visible to plant personnel from the point of normal approach. 2. Pipes shall be marked: a. Adjacent to changes in direction. b. Adjacent to all valves and flanges. c. At both sides of floor or wall penetrations. d. At any other point of entry into the line. e. At 50 foot intervals on straight runs. LEGEND A LEGEND LEGEND Installation 1. Self-Adhesive Pipe Markers a) Surface preparation - Pressure sensitive adhesives perform best on smooth, clean, dry surfaces. Use these guidelines for preparing surfaces for application: If surface is contaminated with oil or grease, clean it with an evaporative solvent such as methyl ethyl ketone. If surface is dirty, clean it with #600 emery cloth or 0000 steel wool, followed by solvent cleaning as above. Rough surfaces can be smoothed with sandpaper, then with steel wool, and solvent cleaned to remove residual dirt. A final cleaning with a dry, lint-free cloth is advised to remove any solvent film. b) Apply marker to pipe c) Wrap bands of arrow tape around pipe on each end of the marker. Make sure to overlap the marker 1/4 to 1/2 inch with the arrow tape. Also make sure to wrap the arrow tape all the way around the pipe and secure it back to itself with approximately a 2-inch overlap. Note: Arrow Tape can be found on page 104 of the Brady full line catalogue (see back of the manual.) 1-16

Pipe Marking Products For Diameters Less Than 8 High Performance/High Visibility Strap-On Pipe Marker (8 and greater Pipe O.D.) Brady B-681 Strap-On HPHV Pipe Markers Brady HPHV Pipe Markers consist of B-681 labels applied to a fiberglass HPHV carrier. Brady Type 316 Stainless Steel straps must be used to affix HPHV markers. It is not necessary to clean the pipes prior to marker application and, when necessary, markers can be removed and reapplied. Each pipe marker requires two clip assemblies on to which the carrier will snap (included with marker). Step One - Installing the clip assemblies a. Remove clip assemblies from pipe marker. b. Measure the outside diameter of the pipe to be marked. c. Cut off a piece of the strapping large enough to fit around the diameter of the pipe plus 8. d. Begin feeding the strapping through the non-ratcheted end of the clip. Start from the underside of the clip and feed into slot A (see next page). Feed the strapping into slot B back to the underside. Leave a 1 1/2 tail coming out of the slot on the underside of the molded clip. e. While holding the clip assembly against pipe, wrap remaining strapping around the pipe and insert it into the slotted part of the ratchet (marked C). Leave a 1/2 piece of the strap extending out of the slot. f. Using a screwdriver, turn the ratchet clockwise to wind the strapping on to the shaft of the ratchet until all excess strapping is taken up. g. Repeat with other clip assembly. Make sure that it is placed parallel to the other unit approximately from other clip. 1-18
20 Installation, cont. Step Two - Attaching Carrier to Clips a. Line up channel on the backside of the carrier to springs on clips so that carrier is centered on clip. Each clip unit should be no less than 6 from the end of the carrier. b. Snap carrier on to both clips. c. The carrier can easily be adjusted on the clips by sliding it until it is in the desired position. It is recommended that the clips be placed more than 6 from the end of the marker
21 Make Your Own Pipe Markers Your Options Buy The first method is to purchase labels from a label manufacturer. This is a good option if thousands of markers are needed at one time. The advantage of buying from a label manufacturer in large quantities is that the cost per marker is low. However, when replacement markers are needed, they are expensive and inconvenient to order. Make There are many advantages to buying a labelling machine and making your own pipe markers. First, you can be detailed with the information on each marker and it doesn t cost more for that information. Second, labels can be made instantly. There is no waiting - no sending information to a label manufacturer - and no limitations. Finally, labels can usually be made more economically than you can buy them, except in large quantities. 31 Regulations/Standards Pipe Marking Standards In Canada WHMIS is the regulation for labelling of hazardous materials in the workplace, but no single standard is mandated for general industry. The standards listed here are commonly followed to comply with WHMIS, enhance understanding by employees, contractors and visitors, and reduce training time. There are 3 main pipe labeling standards. The most universal is the ASME A (formerly ANSI A13.1) "Scheme for identification of Piping Systems". The CGSB standard is required in Federal Government and some other workplaces in Canada. If you have ammonia refrigeration systems, you should follow the standards set forth by the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR) detailed in Bulletin 114 titled "Guidelines for: Identification of Ammonia Refrigeration Piping and System Components" for marking your ammonia lines and components. The remainder of your lines should be marked as per ASME A13.1. The pages to follow will outline a brief summary of each standard. It is strongly suggested that you contact ASME, IIAR, or CGSB to receive a copy of the full standards. You can contact these organizations at: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Phone: International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR) Phone: Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) Phone:

33 CAN/CGSB Identification of Piping Systems The follow summary outlines the Canadian General Standards Board requirements for Identification of Piping Systems and can be purchased in it s entirety by contacting the CGSB Sales Unit: Scope 1. This standard specifies the means for identification of materials contained in piping systems, including pipes buried and electrical conduits by way of colour marking, legend, and in some cases, by pictogram (s). 2. This standard does not apply to piping systems for 1 medical gases. 3. The use of this standard will reduce errors and result in greater safety, while simplifying the handling of emergencies and minimizing hazards to personnel. 4. This standard does not fully address the needs of people who are colour blind or illiterate. 6. Detailed Requirements Markers shall be applied on straight pipe runs, close to valves, fittings or junction boxes, and adjacent to all changes in direction, or where pipes pass through walls or floors. Markers shall be used in continuous, total length coverage or in intermittent displays. Minimum width of the markings shall be 25mm. If a straight run of pipe exceeds 20 m, then additional marking is required Colours used to identify materials contained in a piping system shall be in accordance with 2 Table 1: Material Background Colour Legend Colour Hazardous Yellow Black Inherently Low Hazard Green White Fire Protection Red White Note: Colour numbers are those in CGSB 1-GP Identification by Legend Material contained in a piping system shall be identified by legend with clearly legible letters and/or numbers Piping systems containing materials at high temperatures shall include the temperature and/or the word "HOT" as part of the legend. 1 For piping systems containing medical gases, please obtain CAN/CGSB-24.2-M86. 2 Table 1 Background and Legend Colour can be found on page 3 of the CAN/CGSB standard. 3 Identifier can also mean brand name, code name, chemical name, generic name, trade name, or common name. 1-A
34 CAN/CGSB Identification of Piping Systems cont d Piping containing materials at high pressure or steam shall include the words "High Pressure" or "Steam" (respectively) as part of the legend Electrical conduits shall be labelled "Electrical". Voltage and/or amperage may also be included For any material, if applicable, the words "Liquid" or "Gas" may be included Arrows shall be used to indicate direction of flow with double arrow indicating reversible flow. The arrows must also be large enough to be readily distinguishable and shall be the same colour as the legend The minimum legend height is 13 mm. For pipes less than 19 mm in diam., the use of tags or wall markings is recommended. Outside Diameter of Pipe Covering Height of Letters and Numbers (mm) (mm) 19 to to to to Over Identification by Pictogram (note: minimum pictogram height is 13 mm) In addition to sections 6.1 and 6.2, controlled products shall be identified by pictogram(s) applied on the background colour marking. These pictograms shall be identical to the Workplace Hazardous Material s Information System (WHMIS) and can be found in the full version of this standard available through CGSB. If necessary, more than one pictogram may be used to identify the controlled product. Example of placement order for pipe marking: Width Pictogram Legend Arrow Background Colour (if necessary) 1 For a complete list of Pictograms included in the full version of this standard, please see page 4 of the CAN/CGSB code. 1-Aa
