The NCCCO Digger Derrick Practical Exam is designed to test the skills an operator needs to safely operator their Digger Derrick. Skills measured during the exam include: following handsignals, controlling a load, stowing and un-stowing the auger, digging a hole, and setting a pole. Visit the NCCCO website for more information on the Digger Derrick Certification. Contact Francis Strohfus to schedule training and testing or for more information on the NCCCO Digger Derrick program. The section below outlines the 7 Tasks employed to test the proficiency of the operator. Task 1 Pre-Operational Inspection Checklist The operator will be asked to describe five different checklist items of the Digger Derrick that are part of the pre-operational inspection. The operator will have about one minute for each item to describe what deficiencies would be looked for in the inspection. Incorrectly identified inspection items Pre-Operation Familiarization Period You will be allowed up to ten minutes to familiarize yourself with the Digger Derrick for proper operation. You may run the Digger Derrick through its functions, except for the auger. Do not interfere with the course or test weight, and do not shadow the corridor. Task 2 Chain in Circle (Optimum Time: 1 Minute, 30 Seconds) The operator will pick up a chain from the starting position and raise the chain ten feet in the air to avoid all personnel and obstacles. The chain will then be maneuvered to the landing area and placed inside the circle without contacting any portion of the course. Dragging or contact of the chain outside the landing area Hook touching ground Hook or chain contacting any part of the course or truck Lifting the chain off the ground after initial contact inside the landing area Exceeding the optimum time Course Outline 1 Released: 10/15/2012
Task 3 Hand Signals (This task is not timed) In this task the operator will follow four hand signals to bring the chain back to the original location. Hand Signals: Hoist and stop Swing (left or right) and stop Lower the load and stop Boom (up or down) and stop Telescope (in our out) and stop Boom down and raise load and stop Boom up and lower load and stop Any above signal given slowly and stop Missing any of the hand signals Task 4A Negotiate Corridor - Forward (Optimum Time: 4 Minutes) Before starting this task, you will be given up to one minute to lift the test weight and reposition it inside the designated area. When given the start signal, you will navigate the test weight through the corridor, while keeping the chain on the ground, and place the test weight inside the circle. Once the weight is completely inside the circle, the examiner will give you the stop signal. Knocking ball off pole Moving pole base off line Knocking pole over Chain leaving ground Passing poles with chain off ground Load touching ground Circumventing the course Course Outline 2 Released: 10/15/2012
Task 4B Negotiate Corridor - Reverse (Optimum Time: 4 Minutes) When given the start signal, you will navigate the test weight through the corridor, while keeping the chain on the ground, and place the test weight inside the circle. Once the weight is completely inside the circle, the examiner will give you the stop signal. Knocking ball off pole Moving pole base off line Knocking pole over Chain leaving ground Passing poles with chain off ground Load touching ground Circumventing the course Task 5A Unstow Auger (Maximum Time: 5 Minutes) During this task you will safely unstow the auger and contact the ground in preparation to dig a hole. Unstowing boom at less than a 45 angle Unstowing at high speed Shock loading of auger strap Leaving boom fully extended/retracted Auger contacting the ground out of plumb Boom extended as auger leaves storage bracket Task 5B Auger Hole (Maximum Time: 5 Minutes) When the examiner gives you a start signal, auger a hole until the flights are no longer visible and the examiner gives you a stop signal. While digging, you may ask for assistance to plumb the auger. Corkscrewing Outrigger coming off the ground Course Outline 3 Released: 10/15/2012
Task 5C Stow Auger (Maximum Time: 5 Minutes) In this task you will safely stow the auger. When ready, signal the proctor to assist in connecting the auger strap to the pin. Signal the examiner when you have completed the task. Auger off ground for strap attachment Stowing at high speed Stowing boom at less than a 45 angle Improper wind-up procedure Over-wrapping Shock loading of auger strap Auger not resting on latch Boom extended as auger enters storage bracket Task 6A Pick Up Utility Pole (Maximum Time: 10 Minutes) When the examiner gives the start signal, pick up the pole and place securely in the guides a few inches off the ground. Keep the pole butt within the designated area. You may ask for assistance in the final placement of the pole in the guides. Dragging pole butt outside designated area Contacting obstruction Pole guides supporting weight of utility pole Raising utility pole more than 3 ft. Task 6B Place Utility Pole in Designated Area (Optimum Time: 1 Minute, 30 Seconds) Place the utility pole inside the designated area and lower the pole until the examiner gives you the stop signal. Avoid contacting the ground or other obstructions. Raising utility pole more than 3 ft. Contacting PVC pole base/ground Pole guides supporting weight of utility pole Lowering utility pole out of guides Knocking ball off PVC pole Knocking PVC pole over Course Outline 4 Released: 10/15/2012
Task 7 Stow Boom in Cradle (Maximum Time: 5 Minutes) When the examiner gives the start signal, stow the boom in the cradle apply safe shut-down procedures prior to leaving the operator s station. When you have completed the task, signal the examiner. Boom not fully retracted Load line not fully retracted Leaving boom out of cradle Circumventing the Course Circumventing the course on the NCCCO Digger Derrick Operator Practical Exam is defined as when the load: Leaves the Corridor and passes more than one pole without touching them before reentering the corridor Leapfrogs from one leg of the Corridor to another with the chain off the ground Passes more than four poles consecutively with the chain off the ground, inside or outside of the corridor All points for that task are lost if a circumvention occurs. The Examiner has the authority to stop the task at any time if he/she feels that you are attempting to circumvent any task. Unsafe Act If at any time during the test, you commit an unsafe act, you will be disqualified from continuing with the test. Unsafe acts include but are not limited to the following: Shock loading Two blocking of the digger derrick Uncontrolled or reckless operation Failure to respond to a stop signal Contacting the truck, an obstruction, or personnel with the boom or Test Weight Walking or standing underneath the Test Weight while operating the digger derrick with a remote control Any action that in the judgment of the Examiner could endanger personnel or equipment at the Test Site The Examiner has the authority to stop the test at any time for reasons of safety. Please ask the Examiner if you have any questions. If you are disqualified due to an unsafe act, you will not be permitted to test on that day. Course Outline 5 Released: 10/15/2012
