Generals Information Fundamentals at a Glance We strongly recommend completing a service training course at Sartorius before performing work on Sartorius weighing instruments. Please do not attempt or permit any unauthorized repair work. 4

Service Concept for LE Balances Valid until Revoked - All calibration/adjustment work required for putting the equipment into operation and for testing must be performed in accordance with the operating instructions. - Defects in quality: o Report any defects in quality to the Quality Management Department (WQM) at Sartorius AG in Goettingen. - Defective balances o o o Warranty. Within the first 6 months of installation, any defective balance covered by the warranty should be replaced. Seal of warranty. If you have to remove the Seal of Warranty, please affix your control seal with the Sartorius logo to the unit. In other cases, proceed according to OAW135 (standard operating procedure for equipment returned for repairs). Defective weigh cells. Proceed as described in the Service Concept for Weighing Cells; Service Information from June 2001, OAW135-2/3 (Organizational Procedure for Performing Repair Work and Providing Replacement Equipment). Defective electronics. Send the balance, along with an error report, to the Central Mechanics Workshop (ZW) in Goettingen (OAW135-2). Broken draft shields; weighing pan can no longer be used; replacing small parts, etc. 5

General Instructions Transport: - Always switch off the balance by pressing the e key and then wait approximately 10 seconds before unplugging it from the outlet (mains supply). When a balance with an internal calibration weight is running in the calibration mode, the internal calibration weights are exposed. If you disconnect the balance from power without switching it off first, the exposed weight can cause the weighing system to be damaged during transport. When the balance is switched off properly, the weights are locked in place. - Before you plug in or remove any connecting cables, always disconnect the balance from the power supply, as otherwise components can become destroyed. Changing the Battery Important Note: When replacing the battery, make sure that: - you use a new battery that is identical to the old one or equivalent to the battery recommended by the manufacturer. - the poles are correctly positioned when soldering in the battery. If you use the wrong type of battery, this may result in an explosion.make sure to dispose of the old battery properly according to your country s environmental protection laws. Aut11436.jpg 6

BPI Service Switch Function 1 Activating the BPI Mode The BPI switch (1) is used to prepare for working the service software and is located on the rear panel. The middle opening is intended for the BPI switch (1) (see figure left). Note: The balance must be set to the BPI mode (=Binary Processor Interface Mode) to use Sartorius service software (e.g. for linearization /span adjustment or when replacing the PCB). Aut_4106a.jpg / CP_bpi_t.eps Anz-020F.eps Anz-018F.eps - Turn on the balance using the e key and wait for the segment test on the balance to run, i.e. until g (e.g.; on model LE623S) is displayed. - Remove (unscrew) the threaded cap from the rear panel of the balance, located to the left of the DC jack. - The BPI switch is now accessible through the opening. Press the BPI switch once, e.g. with a ball-point pen, and hold it in: - The display goes blank (segment check is executed). - After about 3 seconds, the interface is in the BPI mode. - Release the BPI switch; the readout returns to normal, and the balance is now in BPI mode. Anz-00F.eps 25

- Cover the opening on the back panel of the balance with the threaded cap. - You can now use the Sartorius service software to check and adjust the balance. Caution: After working in BPI mode, make sure to set the write-protection using the Sartorius service software, to return the balance to the standard data output mode (SBI mode =Sartorius Balance Interface). If the balance is in the BPI mode (= Binary Processor Interface mode) when you press p key, the error code ERR 30 will be displayed. Anz-019F.eps You cannot run standard peripheral devices until you set the balance to the SBI mode. Note: If necessary, you can switch from SBI to BPI by activating menu code 9 1 ( Menu reset ). 26

Balances with a Monolithic Weigh Cell Testing and Adjustment Sequence Preparation: Note: Place the balance on a solid, level surface that is free of vibration, e.g., a stoneslab weighing table. Level the balance using the level indicator. Turn the balance and allow it to warm up for 4 to 24 h. Calibrate/adjust the balance at the current location. Testing must be carried out according to the Sartorius standard operating procedures for testing: WKD These SOPs specify the same adjustment data as those described in this service manual. You will need to check and, if necessary, adjust the following: 1. Repeatability 2. Off-center loading error 3. Span adjustment: External span adjustment Overwrite internal calibration weight Internal span adjustment 4. Linearity External linearity Overwrite internal linearity weight 27

Note: Overload Stops Overload stops do not need to be checked, as these are set and adjusted at the factory. Waags_Just.eps Front Checking the Repeatability (Standard Deviation) - Select the test weight from the service specifications (see pp ). - Unload the weighing pan and zero the balance using the t key. - Center the test weight on the weighing pan. - Write down the weight displayed. - Repeat the procedure five times. - The repeatability is calculated from the 6 weighing operations as follows: S = (Max. value displayed - Min. value displayed) / 3 - Compare the calculated value with the tolerances listed in the service specifications. - If the result exceeds the tolerance limits, this may be due to one of the following circumstances: The weighing system needs to be cleaned A mechanical part (e.g., lever) is touching the weighing system Bent or defective flexural parts Strong vibration at the place of installation 28

Important: Off-Center Loading Error Checking and Adjusting the Off-Center Loading Error An excessive off-center loading error will have a negative effect on the repeatability of the weighing system. In accordance with OIML Directive R76-1 for testing the off-center loading error with rectangular, round and three-cornered weighing pans, the pan is quartered and the test weight placed on each of the four segments in turn. Please see the diagrams below for the off-center load test points. It can be helpful to mark the test points on the weighing pan. Checking the Off-Center Loading Error Note: Refer to the service specifications (pages 68-69) for the test weights to use. LE balance with draft shield: Model: LE225D Place the test weight on position 1 on the weighing pan and zero the balance by pressing the t key. - Place the test weight in positions 2, 3, 4 and 5 in sequence and write down the readout at stability, including the plus/minus signs. - If the off-center loading error is too great, adjust the balance so that the off-center loading error is within the tolerances specified. Eck5-dr.eps 29

Adjusting the Off-Center Loading Error Off-center loading errors are determined by carrying out a 3-point adjustment. The 3-point adjustment shows the greatest possible off-center loading error on the balance. Note: You have to open the balance to adjust the off-center loading error. Open the balance (see page 68-69). Re-connect power, if disconnected. Important: closes open K Winds.jpg Exercise extreme caution when performing the adjustment, as you will be working on an opened balance while the equipment is carrying voltage. The adjustment screws (see arrows, below) are now accessible. Use the two adjusting screws to adjust the off-center load (see page 31 for details). To check the off-center load following adjustment, close the balance housing and position the weighing pan on the balance. Allow approximately 3 to 5 minutes for the balance to warm up. Perform the 3-point adjustment as described on page

B A C 3-Point Measurement - Place the test weight in position A on the weighing pan and zero the balance by pressing t. - Place the test weight in positions B and C in that order, and write down the value displayed at stability in each case. - Example: Position A t key g Position B g Position C g eckl_e03.eps - Adjust only the side with the greatest error (absolute value) as follows: Negative errors: Turn the adjustment screw inwards (clockwise) Positive errors: Turn the adjustment screw outwards (counterclockwise) - Change the position of each screw in small increments and measure the offcenter loading error at positions A, B and C after each adjustment. - Repeat this procedure until the off-center loading error is within the tolerance range at all 3 positions. AUT13765a.JPG Note: Important: After adjusting the off-center loading error, the linearity and span must be checked and, if necessary, adjusted. Make sure the data cable is not damaged when closing the balance housing. 31

closes open Winds.jpg K Place the top of the housing over the balance at a light angle so that the two retainers (below the keypad) click into the two screws (at the front of the weighing chamber). Push the upper part of the of the balance forward carefully, and then press it down gently. Tighten the screw (K) to secure the housing and apply the warranty sticker. Open the sliding lock device on the back of the draft shield. Position the draft shield correctly on the balance, press down lightly on the top of the draft shield and close the sliding lock device. Place the shield ring and weighing pan inside the weighing chamber. 32

Span Adjustment Important: External Span Adjustment Use only calibrated weights for this adjustment. There are two methods for adjusting the span. Anz-024F.eps Anz-200F.eps Anz-026F.eps Important: Waags_Just.eps Front 1. As described in this manual 2. Using the Sartorius service software - Check the balance operating menu to make sure menu code 1 9 1, External cal./adj. accessible or 1 9 7, External cal./adj. with menu access switch closed, is set (see pp , Operating Menu Settings ). - If necessary, tare the balance by pressing the t key. Press q to activate the calibration/adjustment routine. - The calibration weight required is displayed (depends on the model, this example shows the LE225D). The balance only accepts a weight that is within a tolerance range of approx. 2% of the nominal value. Errors exceeding this tolerance range can only be corrected using the Sartorius service software. - Center the required weight (e.g. 200 g/e1) on the weighing pan and close the draft shield. - After the calibration weight has been stored, the balance will return to the weighing mode. If menu code , Calibrate, then manual adjust is set, the calibration weight value is displayed only; press q to adjust. 33

Caution: Important: Note: Overwriting the Internal Calibration Weight The internal calibration weight on LE balances should only be overwritten using the Sartorius service software, since the factory setting of the internal calibration weight is highly accurate. Use the balance s overwrite program perform the overwrite routine only in the case of emergency; for example, if the service software is not available. Before overwriting the internal calibration weight, the span must be adjusted correctly. Allow the balance must warm up for at least 4-24 hours before beginning. There are two methods available for overwriting the internal calibration weight in LE balances. 1. As described in this manual 2. Testing must be carried out according to the following Sartorius Standard Operating Procedure for Testing WKD They are also equivalent to the given adjustment data as described in this service manual. You will need to check and, if necessary, adjust the following: 1. Repeatability 2. Off-center loading error 3. Span adjustment 4. External linearity Note: Overload Stops Overload stops no longer need to be checked on double-lever systems, as they are set and adjusted at the factory. 41

- If the result exceeds the tolerance limits, this may be due to one of the following circumstances: The weighing system needs to be cleaned A mechanical part (e.g., lever) is touching the weighing system Bent or defective flexural parts Eckre01.PMD 42

Off-center Loading Error Important: An excessive off-center loading error will have a negative effect on the repeatability of the weighing system. 43

Checking the Off-Center Loading Error Note: Refer to the service specifications (pages 68-69) for the test weights to use. LE balances with draft shield and three-sided weighing pan Eck_dr_wh1-1.eps Eck_re_2.eps Front 1 4 Models: LE324S; LE244S; LE323S; LE623S; LE623P - Place the test weight on position 1 on the weighing pan and zero the balance by pressing the t key. - Place the test weight in positions 2, 3, 4 and 5 in sequence and write down the readout at stability, including the plus/minus signs. - If the off-center loading error is too great, adjust the balance so that the off-center loading error is within the tolerances specified. LE balances with rectangular weighing pan Models: LE6202S; LE6202P; LE4202S; LE2202S; LE10001; Le5201 LE34001S; LE34001P; LE16001S Compare the off-center loading error values with those given in the service specifications (pages 68-69). - If the off-center loading error is too great, adjust the balance so that the off-center loading error is within the tolerances specified. 44

Note: Adjusting the Off-Center Loading Error After adjusting the off-center loading error, the linearity and span must be checked and, if necessary, adjusted. Procedure for Adjusting the Off-Center Loading Error (Double-Lever System with Adjustment Screws (see arrows)) Use a 3-point measurement to determine the off-center loading error. The off-center loading error of the balance is indicated by the results of the 3-point measurement. Perform 3-point measurement to determine the off-center loading error. AUT13761b.JPG Note: You have to open the balance to adjust the off-center loading error. Open the balance (see page 68-69). Re-connect power, if disconnected. Important: Exercise extreme caution when performing the adjustment, as you will be working on an opened balance while the equipment is carrying voltage. AUT13765a.JPG The adjustment screws (see arrows) are now accessible. Use the two adjusting screws to adjust the off-center load (see page 31). To check the off-center load following adjustment, close the balance housing and position the weighing pan on the balance. Allow approximately 3 to 5 minutes for the balance to warm up. Perform the 3-point adjustment as described on page

3-Point Adjustment B C - Place the test weight in position A on the weighing pan and zero the balance by pressing t. - Place the test weight in positions B and C in that order, and write down the value displayed at stability in each case. A - Example: Position A t key g Position B g Position C g eckl_e03.eps - Adjust only the side with the greatest error (absolute value) as follows: Negative errors: Turn the adjustment screw inwards (clockwise) Positive errors: Turn the adjustment screw outwards (counterclockwise) - Change the position of each screw in small increments and measure the offcenter loading error at positions A, B and C after each adjustment. - Repeat this procedure until the off-center loading error is within the tolerance range at all 3 positions. AUT13761b.JPG / AUT13765b.JPG Note: After adjusting the off-center loading error, the linearity and span must be checked and, if necessary, adjusted. 46

Procedure for Adjusting the Off-Center Loading Error (Double-Lever System) On models: LE323S; LE623S; LE623P;LE10001; LE5201;LE2202S; LE4202S; LE6202S; LE6202P (see upper illustration on the left) and Aut13859a.jpg on models: LE16001S; LE34001S; LE34001P (see lower illustration on the left) the off-center loading error is adjusted by carefully filing the thin parts on the upper guide. To avoid distortion of results, always allow a few seconds after filing for the thin part to cool down. Important: After carefully removing the upper part of the housing, adjust the off-center loading error by filing the rear thin parts with a tapered file. Test the off-center loading error and adjust the greatest error first, by filing carefully in the corresponding position (see illustrations on page 48). The position in which each off-center loading error is tested indicates the position in the weighing system to be adjusted as needed (see Overview of Off-center Loading Error Adjustment Positions on the next page).
