3 1 BUILDING HOW TO LAYERING YOUR LAYERS Stay dry, warm and comfortable on the slopes using the layering system. The three layers work together: A baselayer allows the moisture you produce to evaporate out, a midlayer traps an extra layer of warmth in cold conditions, and the insulating outer jacket protects from wind and snow. BASELAYERS Your baselayer is worn next to the skin and allows your body's natural processes, like sweating, to have the maximum effect. If moisture is trapped next to the skin, when you stop moving you will get cold. Baselayers wick the moisture away from your body, which is then passed through your breathable mid and outer layers. Ski baselayers can either be made from synthetic fabrics such as polyester and polypropylene or merino wool, which is also a great natural insulator, making it a good choice for a variety of climates. MIDLAYERS The midlayer traps warm air while allowing moisture to pass through to the outer layer. If you are skiing in early spring or in a south-facing resort with higher temperatures, a midlayer often isn t required and can be kept in your pack until you start to feel cold. In most cases you will need a midlayer to keep you warm when skiing, especially on long lifts up the mountain. The most common midlayer is a microfleece, which is incredibly efficient at retaining warmth as well as being very lightweight. Midlayers with added stretch are ideal for skiing as they give you increased freedom of movement. OUTER LAYERS The outer layer will be your defence against the elements protecting you from wind, rain and snow whilst allowing moisture and heat from your body to escape. The classic ski jacket is a waterproof shell made using breathable fabrics with a synthetic insulated lining to keep you warm. As with all your layers, choose the thickness of the insulation in your jacket based on the temperatures you are likely to encounter. 6 2 CHOOSING HOW TO JACKETS YOUR WINTER JACKET Whether you re an expert or a novice, a snowboarder or a skier, your new snowsports jacket is your most essential item of clothing. No matter what your budget, all of our winter sports jackets will keep you dry and warm. WATERPROOF Ski jackets need to be waterproof and windproof to keep you protected from the snow and even rain that you may encounter on the slopes. In addition to a waterproof membrane or coating they also a have a durable water repellent treatment (DWR) to help shed snow and rain. INSULATED LINING To ensure you stay warm on the slopes - winter sports jackets have an insulated lining to trap a layer of warm air in the jacket. Most often this is synthetic insulation which is lightweight, warm, quick drying and performs well even if it gets damp. BREATHABLE High breathability is always a key feature in clothing worn during high exertion activities such as skiing. Breathability is the ability of a fabric to allow moisture vapour you produce to be transmitted through the material, reducing condensation inside the jacket and keeping you comfortable. SNOW SKIRT A unique feature found in all skiing and snowboarding jackets is the all important snow skirt. The snow skirt is fixed inside the lower part of the jacket and is made from a piece of fabric with an elastic band, this hugs your body to stop snow from getting inside the jacket. 8 3 UNDERSTANDING HOW TO LEGWEAR SALOPETTES Choosing the right legwear for winter sports is essential for ensuring you stay warm and dry. As snowsports are very active, your salopettes will also need to give you maximum freedom of movement. PROTECTION The outer fabric on salopettes are made from waterproof, windproof and breathable fabric to ensure you are protected from the elements. They also have a durable water repellent treatment to help shed snow and rain. Inside is an insulating layer that is either synthetic insulation or a fleece lining. WARMTH Choose the thickness of your salopettes based on the temperatures you will be skiing in a thinner pair for early spring and thicker for higher altitude or north facing resorts where the temperatures will be much lower. BREATHABLE The knees have articulated cuts so that they bend at the knee without restricting your movement. When trying your salopettes on, make sure you move your legs around, ensuring you have enough room and remember that you will be wearing baselayer leggings underneath. ANKLE GAITORS Ski jackets have snow skirts to keep the snow out and salopettes have the equivalent with elastic internal cuffs that sit above the top of your ski boots.
