4 Foreword The Tenth International Symposium on Skiing Trauma and Safety was held in Zell am See, Austria, May The symposium was sponsored by ASTM Committee F-27 on Snow Skiing and the International Society for Skiing Safety (ISSS). Wolfhart Hauser served as chairman of the symposium. The editors of this volume are C. D. Mote, Jr., Robert J. Johnson, Wolfhart Hauser, and Peter S. Schaff.

5 Dedication SACHIKO YAHASHI ( ) The membership of the International Society for Skiing Safety is deeply saddened by the early and untimely passing of Sachiko Yahashi on February 12, 1995 and dedicates this volume to her memory. Since her first attendance to an ISSS meeting in New Zealand in 1979 with her husband Ken-ichi, Sachiko supported the missions of the Society with elegance and grace, indeed with humor and an electric smile. Her leadership, along with her husband Ken-ichi, of the Sixth International Symposium held in Naeba, Japan in April 1985, will long be remembered for the cultural experiences she arranged. In addition to planning and leading the tours for the conference, she ensured that the most beautiful kimonos were provided for all the ladies for the banquet, a picture that few attendees will ever forget. Instruction in the tea ceremony and flower arranging elevated the cultural level of the Society to a height never reached before or since that meeting. Always polite, always elegant, always appreciated as a wonderful human being, Sachiko holds an ever lasting place in the heart of the Society.
