Thirteenth Annual Hudson Valley Ski Club Holiday Raffle on December 5, 2007 Thanks to the contributors, participants and those members who brought the prizes to the club. Winners of raffle prizes appear on the HVSC website. If you are interested in swapping prizes, contact the appropriate winner. See the full Holiday Raffle Report on page 8 of this newsletter. HOLIDAY DINNER-DANCE MEETING Thanks to the Pat Cummins and his committee, especially the volunteer DJ threesome (Mark Booska, Pat Cummins and Jim Gahn), who provided dinner and dance music for the evening. Come join members of our sister club for a fun day of skiing, racing & learning, if you like, and a sumptuous buffet dinner to wind a day up at one of the best kept skiing secrets in the Catskills. The morning racing is free and optional for HVSC members as is the afternoon mogul clinic. Dinner at the Black Bear restaurant on Route 28 is optional as well, but if you want to attend you must sign up and pay $18 of the $43 in advance so the restaurant has a definitive head count to prepare dinner for. You will not be able to attend the dinner as a walk in and there will be no refunds if you don t show up. Payment checks made out to HVSC for the dinner need to be in to Jeff Elwyn by Wednesday, January 23. The lift ticket is $25 and can be purchased on the 27 at the mountain by showing your HVSC membership card at time of purchase. For planning we would like to know if you are coming and will be racing. Sign ups for the day, race, clinic, and dinner: contact Jeff Elwyn by at Skiercom@hvc.rr.com or phone at PS. Plattekill is approx minutes past Belleayre ski area, follow signs or do a Map Quest. So will the Groundhog see his shadow??? "While at the Sugarbush Ski Area, the ticket window personnel informed me that they will be requiring that you show a ski club id card for each ticket voucher you present at the window beginning January 6." Probably not a bad idea to have memberships cards for ANY ski area at which you try to redeem vouchers. 7 HVSC Off Snow Activities Page 7 ADULT SKI & SNOWBOARD RACE LEAGUE AT CATAMOUNT, Hillsdale, NY (518) I m pleased to announce that the ADULT SKI & SNOWBOARD RACE LEAGE is back for another season and everyone is invited to participate. The same format as last year is being offered and it is expected to be a huge success. We are participating in Team Ski Racing on Wednesday Nights for six weeks (weather permitting). The cost of $95.00 a person includes your lift ticket, race fee, awards and banquet at the end of the season (a portion of the cost will be paid by the club). Registration will be at 6:30 pm and racing should begin about 7:00 pm. This is a GS course and includes two timed runs. Last year over 75 skiers participated on some nights. I m told more than 10 teams have already committed to the event this year. We usually car pool from Red Oaks Mill on race nights. The Season Finale will be the annual President s Race on March 22, 2008 presented by the New Jersey Ski Council (NJSC) at Hunter Mountain. Anyone who has ever participated in this event can attest to its success. This race is open to all HVSC members (children are also allowed to participate). Further details about this event will appear in upcoming newsletters and announced at future meetings. These are all ON-SNOW events (unlike Friday Night Race Training) and open to all levels of skiers and boarders, men and women, from beginners to experts. All HVSC members are invited and encouraged to participate. It is a great opportunity to meet and ski with some of your fellow club members while improving your skiing skills and technique. This weekly event is meant to be FUN, so come on out and enjoy the thrills and spills that racing has to offer. Any other racing events that come up during year will be announced at the meetings, appear in the newsletter or will be posted on the website. To register, contact Tom Pompei at or TVP606@optonline.net. Hope to see everyone there!!! HVSC Video For years members have been sending me photos (digital and hardcopy) of HVSC ski trip and off-snow events. I plan on expanding the Gallery to include video. If you have video either online video files (MPeG, AVI, etc) or DVD of ski trips, social events, meetings, etc., let me borrow then and I ll put them on the website. Please send only stuff that you created and I reserve the right to edit what you send for size and appropriateness. 8 Page 8 HVSC Holiday Raffle 2007 Report The Hudson Valley Ski Club s Raffle was a success, with 69* Prizes valued at $4, won by those with winning tickets. The event brought in $1, for the club. A number of Lift Tickets were combined into pairs* for more value to the winners and to reduce raffle time. I want to thank all members who contributed by soliciting donations and coordinating the event, both behind the scenes and on event night. A big thank you, goes to all who purchased raffle tickets and to those who attended the event on December 5th. A special thank you goes to Shirley Rinaldi, who did the final accumulation of gifts, organizing and event night coordination. The list of gifts, donors, solicitors and winners is posted on the HVSC website and will be included in the February Newsletter. Also listed are those winners who wish to trade their winning prize. Winners should contact each other to arrange trades. Thank you letters will be sent to all Donors and members who contributed. If anyone sees an error in the gift list, please report the issue to Dave Ghostlaw via (dghostlaw1@hvc.rr.com) or a call to ( ). Please do the same if you want to trade your prize and did not indicate such on raffle night. The amount of work that is expended by members is way out of proportion to the amount of money raised for the club. The same work, if not more, was put into this year s raffle as in 2006, but the amount raised was far less ( $2,151 raised in 2006 with 184 prizes valued at $7,642 ). Also, the percentage of members who contribute to this fund raiser is only 22% of our membership ( counted are workers, donors and ticket purchasers all who contribute in any way). Mainly because of participation and the work to money raised ratio, I feel that the Raffle Fund Raiser is on our Endangered Activities List and will recommend to the board that it be replaced by other creative financing for Certainly, Irrational Exuberance, to quote a famous government figure, does not fit the Raffle Event. Happy New Year to Everyone. 9 HVSC Page 9 THE SKINNY ON CROSS COUNTRY By: Mark Booska mebooska@yahoo.com Flying on corduroy The spring like weather in mid-january erased all the snow in our area as well as the desire for most people to even think of skiing. Most XC centers were either closed because there was no snow or closed during the week to protect the base for the weekend travelers. Even Lake Placid had to cancel races so it is no wonder that everyone assumed the skis would stay in the bag until more suitable conditions arrived. A few of us were more determined and our diligence was rewarded. We were down to just a few choices if we were to ski within 3 ½ hrs of Pok. Three of us opted for Lapland Lake and I must say that it was spectacular, much better than we could have expected! We agreed to arrive at 12:30 since we never ski all day anyway and that way we could leave the house at a civilized hour. Two of us made the rendezvous at the appointed hour and the third still hadn t shown up after stretching, waxing and warming up. The two of us joined up with two other acquaintances to form a very compatible quartet for about 45 minutes. One had to leave but we picked up one more for another lap of the undulating perimeter loop. Paul Kuznia from the Fahnestock Winter Park led our little group because of his ability to ski tempo while I enjoyed the exercise in close formation skiing. The objective is to stay tight without letting gaps open or riding the tails of the skis in front while going up and down hills, transitions and cornering. It is like drafting on the bike with the addition of carbide tipped poles flying up at head height after every stroke. Two hours of that was enough for Paul so he went to walk his dog. I went inside for the ipod to continue solo when our friend Manuel finally showed up. He had started just minutes after our group had departed but we never ran into each other on the one way trails so he was warmed up. Now that the shackles of tempo skiing had been discarded we threw down the gauntlet. Manuel quickly discovered that he had gone too hard on the hills while skiing alone and now didn t have enough in reserve to answer my speed. The ipod provided the musical motivation and the lightning bolts on my feet were the instruments that carried me across the winter landscape. Poor Manuel didn t have a chance. Under typical circumstances we are evenly matched but on this day my skis were singing and I was in the zone. None of us expected much that weekend we just hoped to find enough snow to keep some fitness and now here I was absolutely rocketing down the trails. The corn snow had hardened up during the afternoon creating near ideal conditions for flying. I stopped just long enough so that he knew where I was going then it was lift off again. I can t say how fast I was going but there was I wind in my face and I was happy to have my amber glasses on. I zipped past the tourists like they were skiing in the other direction, barely slipping past a family in a tight left hand turn, turning on the afterburners to squeeze through a group massing at an intersection before the hole closed. I could still see Manuel in the rearview mirror so I was motivated to press my advantage until I was out of sight. I do not have the literary skills to accurately convey the incredible joy that I felt powering over the small rises, gliding effortlessly across the flats and screaming down the hills barely able to step around the turns before running out of real estate. I couldn t help but ski backwards down the wide gentle slope from the lake and pull a few 360s. It was too much fun. I was too happy. I was too exhilarated to acknowledge the weariness that my body felt. Darkness was the only thing that could make me stop. Sunday would bring another day of xc nirvana, of dancing on skis and flying on corduroy. Last months Trail Pass Trivia answer: Charlie Shanes correctly answered that we are actually skiing on a thin layer of water. Charlie wins the two passes to the Fahnestock Winter Park. This months Trail Pass Trivia question for two passes to the FWP. Q: Why has mohair been used in skiing? CONSTITUTION AMENDMENTS The deadline for submitting any HVSC Constitution amendments for next Spring' s election ballot at the April annual meeting is January 31, Please submit any proposals to your Constitution committee chairperson, Glenn Morris, before that date. This will give the committee time to help you word your amendment correctly so it stands a chance to pass, and time to show it to the Board of Directors for their understanding.
