The romontory o Dreams I have walked in other Edens - Serendib and Malabar, lue lagoons and Doing alms, Sunny girls and Southern stars. These are ar-o ancies, Dreams or idle hours. My git to you Is here to have - Our almost-isle, our garden, Washed by the oal sea. So take my hand, The early sun Lights embers in the sky - The shining sea Has rinsed the shore and Holystoned the bay. Our shadows long as arrows, First to claim the day, Leaving marks or Crusoe In the sands, We ll walk the dunes and lowery clis The etticoats o Gower. All this is ours, A lovers day. lessed by sun, The git o time. Gazing in the mirror ools We ll ind the meaning o the sea. I ll show you oets corners,
Churchyards, drowsy lanes, The way to randy Cove and Three Clis ay. I ll tell you tales o smugglers (Some o them are true), And as your gallant hero, Climb the roe To Culver Hole. On hossili s golden mantle Near to the schooner s bones, I ll ind a Sanish enny and Send it all on you. lessed by timeless hours We ll dream uon the sea. Lieboatmen s Memorial at ort Eynon They know the language o the gales, Uneasy relude, distant drums, Falling glass and glassy sea. Yellow western sky, Anvil cloud and gathering storm. They sense the summons in their bones eore the rockets slit the sky. Hurry kisses, close the door, Into the cold and rainy swirl, and March towards the storm. Souwester hats and belts o cork, Cockleshell and limsy oars, Not much to battle angry seas. They gather u their courage and un towards the storm.
Men and boys and horses heave the earing boat in the blinding sea. Swamed, hal-drowned and digging oars, reathless in the wateralls, They steer towards the storm. In Eynon church the granite stone Says three were swet away. We wonder at the modest men Who hurry rom their homes And head towards the storm. The lieboat is the village heart, Its urose and its meaning - The outstretched hand, humanity - Men illed the emty seats and Steered towards the storm. Saint Cenydd A lonely island Lost and old, ustling dunes and Saltmarsh shore. Sighing seagrass Seabird skirl. Whisered rayers In chael stones - Our saint o Gower ests his soul. Seabirds tell the story An inant shamed,
A sinless child From a sibling s womb, Cast in a cradle On the tlde. A cloud o seagulls, Sailors souls, Swooing on the marbled wave, ore him to the rock, Warmed him with their wings. Angels ed him, So he grew Sae his home, The noble rock, Crouching dragon, Grand and stubborn, Hard against the sea. Gentle waves his lullaby, Storms a symhony. Melodies o dolhins, Seamews haunting song, Syllables and grammar o his Seashore mother tongue. He wandered saintly, Did God s work, Teaching kindness, Graced us all And rests his soul While seabirds sing his story, His seashore mother tongue.
randy Cove We are shadow men Concealed in veser gloom, Coiled in the rocks Taut with risk, Waitlng or the shi to loom. Free trade men o Gower Waiting or the waning moon. In the velvet sea: A lantern s glow. Whisers, Scules, Creaks and muled oars. From the cloaking shadows We lit as crabs to the shore. Fity Gower coolies, Carry the China tea Coee or comanionshi Tobacco or the soul, Cinnamon to sweeten, Satin or a maid, Lace or the squire s lady, Silk or a bride in May. rawny lads haul brandy In dark and secret caves. The armer s horse takes casks to church, Away rom the excise eye
The arson oers blessing On the sirit o the Lord estlng in its barrels eneath the altar board. Men o sice and leasure, Night tlme cavaliers. Free trade men o Gower, Wait or the waning moon. The Marsh Horses eneath the leets o clouds Sweet solitude, A oignant shore, A world o in-between, Hal-land, hal-sea, Hal-sad, hal-salt, A rairie o the tide. The moon reveals the underworld elow the keel Dark whales o mud Seabed streams Silver rills, Seeing silt, Seaweed air, Stilted waders Steing, ecking, in the Wrack and lotsam Hemlines o the tide.
It turns, A whiser breeze, As snaking tongues o water Flicker stealthy Through the ooze and inse away The rints o birds and Flooding, hungry, Drive the saltgrass shee to shore From the meadows o the tide. Ethereal, The horses kee their ground, Hal-horses in the riled mirror O the sea, In commune with the moon, Imbued with mysteries O the low, Wandering ghostly nomads In the rairies o the tide. The aviland Man I am a distant bell, A lord o time, And san the years. I sang and ran, Danced alive, My eet on sot warm earth, At sumise in our inant world.
Nine million dawns ago, eyond your dreams, I dreamed and roamed In my domain, Sot yellow lains, eore the Severn Sea was born, At sunall, Silent in the reeds, I watched the lions la And looked into their amber eyes, As amber as the water ool. We were hunters Swit and ree, Shar o sear and hunger ang Killed the creatures, Sang or oy, Danced or lie. In the embers o the sun. You ound my bones, Anointed red To lease the gods, And in my grave my ivory rings, A hunter s wealth, My ourney ees. These bones o mine Are yours. We touch across the years. emember me, I sang and ran And danced alive. I am your distant bell.
