6 Motivation for an open source modeling tool Modeling have been used at Ericsson since mid 90 s For modeling different aspects, including system, software, implementation, platform, network, and information/data Large user base (thousands of designers) Modeling have demonstrated key benefits in many different contexts But the evolution of the MDA approach has been severely damaged by the lack of good tool support Competing tools from different tool vendors instead of collaboration Currently relying on commercial proprietary tools e.g. RSA, RSA RTE, Rhapsody, BridgePoint, EA, PowerPoint We have some bad experiences from this But, they have also failed regarding a number of aspects Need the tools the be easier to use Need more capabilities regarding a number of different aspects Need better support for customization and DS(M)L Need more and better integrations MDD4DRES Summer School, Aber Wrac h (France) Sept 1-5, 2014 Page 6

18 DS(M)L UML or DS(M)L? This is the wrong question! You can have both! The real question is: UML-based DS(M)L or pure DS(M)L? What does pure means? UML-Based DS(M)L Leverages the UML foundational semantics layer Results from the collaboration of years of work from top world experts Facilitates integration with other languages Benefits from the different UML-based technologies (present and future) More complex to define that pure DSML UML expertise required Pure DSML Simpler to define the DS(M)L itself no UML expertise required You are on your own to evolve your DS(M)L and associated technologies and toolchain Unless you define a standard based on your DS(M)L!
