26 Pool & Patio Tile Natural Stone, Porcelain, & Glass Tile Specification Information Natural Stone Disclosure Stone products possess inherent characteristics which by nature include, but are not limited to extreme variations in coloration, shading and structure. The material is quarried and cut from blocks which change from light to dark tones naturally. Other natural materials and additional colorations along with veining and fissures are expected from a natural stone. Glass Installation Inspect products BEFORE installation for any visible defects and/or other aspects that may be questionable, such as, but not limited to: shade variations, chipped edges, scratched surface, correspondence between ordered and supplied products, etc. Installation of products claimed to be defective or not corresponding to customer s expectations constitutes acceptance of the product as is and no claims will be accepted after installation. Drying Time: Glass tiles are non-absorbent. The moisture in the setting materials cannot migrate into the glass, it must evaporate slowly through the grout joints. This process requires a longer cure time. Allow the mortar to dry at least 36 to 48 hours before grouting. Recommended Setting Materials for Glass: Follow manufacturer s instructions DO NOT mix brands. DO NOT dilute the recommended latex products. When mixing setting and grouting materials DO NOT use high speed drills (over 350 to 400 RPM); this can weaken the mortar and create air pockets in the mortar which can be seen through glass. White thin-set reflects the most light and creates the brightest color through the glass. Abrasion Resistance Abrasion resistance is based on the amount of foot traffic the tile will receive and how well it will stand up to the level of traffic. This measurement is often called the wear rating of the tile. Following is the industry s accepted wear rating classifications from the Porcelain Enamel Institute, or PEI: PEI Wear Ratings PEI Class 1 Rating (No Foot Traffic)-Recommended for wall use in residential and commercial applications only. PEI Class 2 Rating (Light Traffic)-Recommended for both wall use and bathroom floor applications only. PEI Class 3 Rating (Light to Moderate Traffic)-Recommended for countertops, walls and floors where Scratch Resistance A tile s resistance to scratching is based on the Moh s Scale of Hardness which consists of 10 classifications, 1 reflects a very soft surface, and 10 is very hard, resistant to scratching. Porcelain is generally an 8/9 rating, while most glazed tile ranks at 6/7. Breaking Strength Breaking strength is assessed by determining the amount of weight needed to cause a surface to break. Slip Resistance Slip resistance is measured by determining the amount of force required to get an object (shoe sole material) to move across the tile s surface or the coefficient of friction; the higher the coefficient of friction the 26

27 Shade Variation V1 = Uniform Appearance: Differences among pieces from the same production run are minimal. V.= Slight Variation:.. Clearly distinguishable texture and/or pattern within similar colors. V3 = Moderate Variation: While the colors present on a single piece of tile will be indicative of the colors to be expected on the other tiles, the amount of colors on each piece may vary significantly. V4 = Substantial Variation: Random color differences from tile to tile, so that one tile may have totally different colors from that on other tiles. Thus, the final installation will be.... unique. Care & Maintenance Porcelain tile is stain-resistance, requiring minimal maintenance. Wipe up spills with a damp cloth or sponge. Regular cleaning with clear water or a mild detergent is recommended. Never use abrasive cleaners. Put a mat outside each door and a rug just inside to collect dirt before it gets onto the floor. Glass Care & Maintenance Wiping the glass surface with a damp sponge or cloth is usually sufficient. When stronger cleaning is needed, any standard, non-abrasive floor, wall or glass cleaner can be applied with a non-abrasive sponge or cloth. 27
