7 HALF DAY TOURS Half Day Tour of Magnificent Lissadell House and grounds (Allow min Four Hours for Visit): LISSADELL HOUSE When you visit Lissadell you are not only seeing some of the finest gardens and architecture in the North West. you are also experiencing the beginning of much of the modern history and culture of Ireland, all uniquely located in one home. A landmark historic estate, the property was purchased in 2003 by Constance Cassidy and Edward Walsh who have transformed it into a flagship for tourism in Sligo and the North West. Famous as the childhood home of Countess Constance Markievicz, one of the leaders of the 1916 Rising - Ireland s armed rebellion in protest of British Occupation. Markievicz was the first woman to be elected to Dáil Eireann, where she served as Minister for Labour and thus became the first female minister in a modern Western European democracy. Countess Markievicz was also the first woman to be elected to the House of Commons at Westminster, London (where she declined to take her seat). She grew up in the house with her sister Eva Gore-Booth and her brother Josslyn Gore-Booth. Eva was a poet of distinction and an active suffragist who clashed with a young Winston Churchill over barmaids rights in 1908, while their brother Josslyn created one of the premier horticultural estates in Europe at Lissadell, which you will see faithfully recreated in your visit. Notably, the great poet and Nobel Laureate W. B. Yeats was friendly with the Gore Booth sisters and stayed at Lissadell in 1892 and As you can see, so much of today s history is contained within the walls of Lissadell House, surrounded by picturesque views of The Alpine and Kitchen Gardens. It is the most extensive in Europe and older than the pyramids. It is located at the centre of a prehistoric ritual landscape on the CúilIrra peninsula. This is the largest cemetery of megalithic tombs in Ireland and is also among the country s oldest, with monuments ranging from five and a half thousand to six and a half thousand years old. Archaeologists have recorded over 60 tombs of which 30 are visible. A restored cottage houses an exhibition relating to the site. It is best known as the final resting place of W.B. Yeats. Found in the churchyard, his grave is marked with a simple headstone with the inscription, cast a cold eye on life, on death, horseman, pass by. This was Yeats self penned epitaph together with the instructions that the grave consist of no marble, no conventional phrase. The graveyard also contains a high cross and nearby is the site of a 6th Century Columbian monastery. Coffee shop and craftshop on site offering homebaking and quality crafts. This beautiful building is the home of the Yeats Society, Sligo, and was donated to the Yeats Society by the AIB Bank in THE YEATS INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL Now in its 56th year the Yeats International Summer School brings students and professors from every country and continent of the world to Sligo for a two week cultural and literary experience.
