Someone offers you complimentary mimosa or champagne, but not because it s a holiday it s just another day...any given day of the year. It s a great example of how beauty salons on the Hill are raising the bar for customer service, offering new treats and ever more customized treatments and products. Salons are offering more goodies for loyal customers, and incentives for clients to tell their friends about their experiences. Salons are tapping into real-life social networks by offering referral programs. New Year s doesn t mean abandoning tried and true models of excellent in-person customer service and word-of-mouth recommendations. So what s new? Well, in 2012, beauty businesses on the Hill are going digital in even more ways. They are building and expanding their existing presence on the Web, such as through a new YouTube tutorial channel, and tapping into virtual social networks through the use of new apps for smart phones. One such app uses geolocational data to match clients with subscriber businesses in the same area. For those with scalp issues, the salon is also offering an exfoliating treatment Hopfer called truly amazing. Continuing the 2012 trend of linking in digitally in the New Year, the salon will also be commissioning a series of video tutorials for its own new You- Tube channel. Photo: Andrew Lightman Just last month I bought my first pair of size 8 Talbot corduroy jeans. Never EVER in my adult life have I been this small. All my life (even as a kid) I have been short and stocky. I was strong, athletic and solid. I did not have the body men dream about, nor did I have a body that fit American women s clothes comfortably. I was never huge, but I was never happy. I didn t like the way I looked, and I dragged that feeling around with me no matter what I did like a ball and chain around my ankle. Even when I lost a lot of weight years ago when I looked into the mirror I still saw a fat, unattractive woman. Over the years I tried the Scarsdale diet, fasting, prescription diet pills, the French women s diet and all forms of daily aerobic exercise. I was not a binge eater, not a drinker nor a junk-food fanatic (though I love my desserts!). I always kept healthy, and always struggled with a desire to look thinner. I was stressed out about how I looked. I felt bombarded. Ironically, I chose to work in the fitness field and was surrounded with men and women who had what I thought to be perfect bodies (and because of that, perfect lives). The standards were everywhere for me to live up to on TV, in magazines and the movies. I couldn t get away from it. Feeling Unworthy My feelings of being not as good as others started at an early age. As a child I remember a well-meaning older cousin commenting on 88 HillRag January 2012

12 the size of my arms. My weight never was right for the Metropolitan Life Insurance weight chart doctors used as a standard for measurement. I got teased by other children. I felt that, because of my weight I was never really a part of anything, but sitting on the sidelines watching. Growing up the feeling of unworthiness permeated everything I did. Sometimes it made me angry, other times it made me sad and even depressed. I felt as if I had no control. Feeling not all right all the time, made me hesitant to act, caused me to doubt my instincts, zapped my energy and kept me from knowing who I was. Deciding to Change A few years ago I pretty much gave up. I got tired of the struggle, I got fed up with my self doubt and got angry for beating myself up so much. I just didn t care anymore. Instead I made a conscious effort to choose to be happy. I made peace with the way I was. When I let go of my anxiety and obsession, my weight began diminishing naturally. What I learned anecdotally has been supported by research published last month the IDEA Fitness Journal. Most weight problems occur between the ears, which may explain why most diets don t work. Author Mary Monroe quotes Dr. Daniel Amen, a neuropsychiatrist who has published The Amen Solution: The Brain Healthy Way to Lose Weight and Keep It Off (Crown 2011). According to Monroe, Dr, Amen discovered the connection between the brain and overeating from results of two of his earlier research projects. The first was a home study course on anxiety and depression, based on scientific evidence that people could improve mood and reduce anxiety by implementing home strategies. When Amen followed up with the 90 participants, he found that many felt less anxious, had better memory and focus, and surprisingly-had lost 10, 20 and even 30 pounds in 12 weeks, said Monroe. Listening to My Body and to Me Honoring the intelligence of my body is a priority. I believe if I listen to it (it takes practice) my body will tell me everything I need to know to keep it alive and well. If I have an ache, I tend to it. If I feel tired, I rest. If I feel hungry I eat. I eat anything I want, really enjoy what I m eating and stop eating when I m full. Some of the principles I found works for me: - When I look into the mirror, I feel okay about the woman I see. Of course I always want improvement, but I feel good right now. - I don t believe in deprivation. No food is off limits. If I want it I eat it. However, I also believe that anything is fine in moderation. - I only eat when I m hungry. I don t buy into It s noon so I have to have lunch. I don t eat several small meals. Instead of being afraid of hunger, I enjoy the feeling. Sometimes when I m hungry water will satisfy me. - I remind myself I always have choices. I am the one creating my happiness. I ask myself, Will that piece of chocolate cake really make me happy? - Everything I eat or drink tastes very good. That means no non-fat anything and very little processed food mostly local and/or organic. When it stops tasting delicious, I stop eating it. I do this with ice cream. I found the first few bites tastes great, but then the rest is just okay so I save it for another time. - I try to balance my food intake. I think about what I am doing and what I will be eating for the day. If I have bread for breakfast I won t have it at dinner. If morning meal was high in protein I will have more vegetables at dinner. - When I go to a restaurant I read over the menu and choose the meal that will make me feel the best to eat. Often I select two or three choices and imagine eating each one to determine the best one for me. - I do some form of exercise most every day. I only do what I love to do (I hate jogging!) I don t know what I weight or how much weight I lost. I don t care. In fact, I found that weighing myself does not make me feel good. I know when I ate too much I feel it! So I adjust the next day or two. I also know when my pants are a little tight. I ll drink more water or adjust my food intake. Most of all, I am not wedded to the outcome. My goal is to feel good, NOT lose weight. By adjusting my thoughts, letting go of long-held beliefs and having fun with the process, I found I am achieving without struggle something I yearned for most of my life.
