They will be training hard until May 24th when the top 12 will be chosen.

4 Page 4 Victoria Synchro Long Term Athlete Development Plan Victoria Synchro believes and follows the Canadian Sport For Life long term athlete development plan in alignment with Synchro BC and Synchro Canada. Children, youth and adults need to Over view: (taken from Canadian Sport for life) do the right things at the right time for develop in their sport or activity whether they want to be hockey players, dancers, figure skaters or gymnasts. Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) describes the things athletes need to be doing at specific ages and stages. Victoria Synchro believes that the LTAD plan will assist kids to become active, stay active and even reach the greatest heights of sport achievement if they do the right things at the right times. Long Term Athlete Development consists of 7 stages. 1) Active Start for ages 0-6 years our corresponding program Synchro Kids/AquaSquirts 2) Fundamentals for girls (6-8 years) and boys (6-9 years) our corresponding program Synchro School 3) Learn to Train (girls 8-11, boys 9-12) our corresponding program Olympic Dreams 4) Train to Train (girls 11-15, boys 12-16) our corresponding program Provincial/National Stream Age Group Programs 5) Train to Compete (girls 15-21, boys 16-23) our corresponding program National Stream Junior Program 6) Train to Win (girls 18+, boys 19+) Synchro Canada 7) Active for Life (any age participant) our corresponding program All our recreational/competitive programs including Synchro for Teens and Masters Programs Stages 1, 2 and 3 develop physical literacy before puberty so children have the basic skills to be active for life. Physical literacy also provides the foundation for those who choose to pursue elite training in one sport or activity after age 12. Stages 4, 5 and 6 provide elite training for those who want to specialize in one sport and compete at the highest level, maximizing the physical, mental and emotional development of each athlete. Stage 7 is about staying Active for Life through lifelong participation in competitive or recreational sport or physical activity. 5 Page 5 Please note that parents are not allowed on deck during the meet, they must remain in common areas or viewing areas. Your child s coach will oversee the athletes during the meet. For the younger swimmers, the coach may ask for your assistance in getting the girls prepared and ready, but she will let you know. #1 KEEP IT FUN! FIGURES: (These are the technical parts of the Synchro Competition) - all athletes must wear ALL black one piece bathing suits (with no colours of marking of any kind on them) and must be in good repair and white bathing caps Reasons they all look the same Assists in impartiality No distractions for the Judges Athletes will compete in a total of 4 figures, 2 are compulsory and 2 are a draw from the remaining figures for the age group and level (in Provincial Stream). The optional figure draw is done and announced 72 hours before the meet. This allows for fairness for all athletes. Figures are performed individually in front of 3-5 Judges (sometimes there will be training judges as well) at 2-4 panels (usually the corners of the pool) All athletes will be assigned a number (also from a random order draw). They will move between panels following the number assigned. TECHNICAL SKILLS: (This is a new event in BC. It s for all athletes level 2 and up) These skills are learned using a metronome as the skills are to be performed to counts (Judges will assess how well the skill is performed along with how close the swimmer kept to the counts) These skills were brought in to support athletes and coaches through the Long Term Athlete Development Model.

6 Page 6 They develop clear technical objectives for a few of the basic Synchro skills They allow the tracking of progress throughout the season, team and career through Synchro BC They are critical to train at a young age. They will improve BC Athlete performances and finishes at Canada Winter Games and assist in placing more athletes from BC on the National Teams. Figure Scores: Figures are scored on a scale of 0-10 in.1 increments. Eg. 4.5, 4.7, 6.2 etc. Figures account for 50% of the routine scores! Depending on the amount of Judges, all figure scores are averaged. If there are more than 3 Judges, the highest and lowest mark is discarded and the remainder are averaged, resulting in the final score. All figure scores are combined with Routine Scores to make the Championship Score. What Judges are looking for... (some of the stuff anyway..) - Stability - Height out of water - Strength - Speed Penalties for Figures: Yes they happen! If a swimmer has performed the incorrect figure or made a technical error in the figure, the judges will discuss with the swimmer the error and ask them to reswim. They will be assessed a 2 point penalty. If the swimmer does not reswim the figure they will be given a 0 for that figure. Other reasons for penalties in the figure event are: swimming out of order, absence (name will be called 3 times and then a 0 will be given), swimming under someone else s number, or a major error. Penalties are difficult to handle but they do happen (more often than you might expect), girls get nervous and do the darndest things!!!! ETICATE DURING FIGURES: - No flash photography is ever permitted at a Synchro Meet! - During figures the pool is to be quiet. - No applause or cheering is permitted as this is a time for concentration by the athletes and judges. Save your cheering for the Routine!

7 Page 7 ROUTINES: The fun part! The girls will do their hair. This means it will be put up and covered in Knox Gelatin! It is a messy procedure but quite the experience. The younger girls will need assistance with this part for sure! You will undoubtedly receive instructions and assistance from your coach. Sometimes the older bigger girls will also assist you. The coach will also direct the makeup portion of the getting ready production!!! Kinds of Routines at a meet: Solo: one swimmer Duet: two swimmers Trio: three swimmers... ha ha... okay Team: consists of a minimum of 4 swimmers to a maximum of 8 swimmers Combination Team (Combo): consists of 4-10 swimmers to a team. In a Combo routine, the team will have solos, duets, trios and small groups all in the same routine. It makes for an exciting routine with a lot going on at the same time! Scoring Routines: You will see 2 sets of scores for the routine, during finals there will be 3. The first score you will see is the score for Technical Merit. There are actually 3 parts assessed for this score. 1. Execution of strokes, figures, propulsion and precision of patterns 2. Synchronization with each other and the MUSIC 3. Difficulty of strokes, figures, patterns and synchronization The second score you will see is the score for Artistic Impression. This also has 3 parts to it as well 1. Choreography- looking for variety, creativity, pool coverage, patterns and transitions 2. Music Interpretation- use of the music in the routine 3. Manner of Presentation- total command of the performance. The total Routine score is the 2 scores (Artistic Impression and Technical Merit) added together and then divided by 2. The final score you will hear is the Championship Score. This is the total score for the routine when the

8 Page 8 figure scores are calculated in. The figure score of each team member is combined and averaged and then added making up 50% of the total score. About Routines: Routines have a time limit! There are times specified for each routine. The times vary for the different ages and levels and type of routine. Example: Provincial Level 1 Solo must be 2:00 minutes +/- 15 sec. Deck work must be less than 10 sec. and the walk on must be 30sec or less. If any of these are not adhered to a penalty will be assessed! Routines must also contain Elements. There will be a technical monitor that will be watching and checking off each element that is required for the routine. If an element is not performed a penalty will also be assessed. Penalties will also be given for incorrect starting points! Volunteering at Meets: These meets can t happen without all you wonderful people helping the kids out. All the jobs are simple and take very little skill, just bodies! Jobs you may be asked to do at a meet are: Figure Scoring: simple... just write down the marks that are called out Timing for Routines: use a stopwatch to time the different parts of the routine necessary. Runner take the slips of paper the judges fill out to someone who keeps track of them. Assist with Music: Push the song on the ipod when required. Occasionally, you have to change CD s but most meets will now all be on ipods or digitally on a computer. You could be asked to be an Announcer. This just means reading the script! Straight forward. If we are hosting a meet, there will be other jobs as well, like setting up, cleaning up, overseeing the hospitality for the officials. No job is huge and most allow you the best viewing point for seeing your child! A major perk of the job! REMEMBER SPRING BREAK! Mon Mar 10 th Sun Mar 16 th no practices!!
