1 We are hosting a large Synchro BC competition the Feb 3, 4 & 5th! This meet includes the: National Stream Provincial Championships Provincial Stream Routine Training & Figures Meet Masters Regional Championships Canadian University Championships All our National Stream, Provincial Stream and competitive Masters will be competing at this meet!! Anyone can come to watch any of the events and support our athletes. There will be many opportunities to watch some amazing synchronized swimming! Spectacular Water Show! 2 Feb 3-5 we re hosting!! National Stream Provincials, Provincial Stream Routine Training & Figures Meet, Masters Regionals AND Canadian University Championships Spring break March 20-Apr 2 Last recreational classes (Synchro School, Synchro for Kids, Synchro for Teens, Masters) are week of March 13th. Classes resume starting week of Monday April 3rd. Mar 21-26, Quebec City Synchro Canada National Qualifier this event is attended by national stream athletes from all over Canada! It includes figures and routine events. Victoria Synchro national stream athletes in age groups and up will be attending. 3 The synchro meets we host and meets we attend out of town could not run without volunteers. Volunteering is crucial to our swimmers, our club and the sport of synchronized swimming. All parents of competitive swimmers (Provincial & National streams) are expected to volunteer! Synchro BC sets up a volunteer sign-up website. Families of competitive swimmers will get an from Victoria Synchro with a link to this. All the jobs are simple and take very little skill, just bodies! Jobs you may be asked to do at a meet are: Figure Scoring: just write down the marks that are called out and add with calculator Timing for Routines: use a stopwatch to time the different parts of the routine Runner during routines take the slips of paper the judges fill out to someone who keeps track of them. When we host a meet, there will be other jobs as well: setting up, cleaning up, hospitality (food) for the officials No job is huge and most allow you the best viewing point! A major perk of the job! Volunteering at meets also earns competitive families volunteer points to work off the volunteer bond they posted with the club! Volunteering at meets is also an excellent way to learn more about your daughter s sport and how meets work! 3

4 All of our provincial, national and masters competitive athletes will be competing at the upcoming meet we are hosting. Although recreational swimmers (Synchro for Kids, Synchro School, Synchro for Teens, recreational Masters) will not be participating in the meet itself everyone is encouraged to come and watch and parents are welcome to volunteer! Below and on the following pages is information which may help you understand a little more about what happens at a synchronized swimming meet. Synchronised swimming is both an individual and team sport. Swimmers compete individually during figures, and then as a team during the routine. They may also compete in solo or duet routines. They compete within their own competitive stream and age group. Figures Routines Other: there may be testing or camps for additional skills 4

5 Figures are made up of a combination of skills and positions that often require control, strength, and flexibility. Individual Figures are set by FINA, the international organization which regulates water sports. Example: This is a diagram for the figure Ballet Leg Single Ballet Leg Single All provincial stream age groups and national stream age groups up to and including junior compete in figures events. For figures each competing athlete must wear an all-black bathing suit, plain white cap and black goggles, along with their nose clip. The swimmers line up in order and each one takes their turn to swim out in front of the judges panel, complete the assigned figure and then swim off. The judges then give their marks which are recorded. The coach will be watching and also give the swimmer feedback. Then the swimmer moves to the next panel of judges and repeats the process with their next figure. Athletes will compete in a total of 4 different figures, 2 are compulsory (remain the same for the season and athletes know what they are ) and 2 are a random draw from the remaining figures for the age group. The optional figure draw is done and announced at least 72 hours before the meet. This allows for fairness for all athletes. Figures are scored on a scale of 0-10 in.1 increments. Eg. 4.5, 4.7, 6.2 etc. Figures account for 50% or more of the routine scores! Swimmers are ranked individually for this part of the competition. Additionally each swimmers figure scores are added to the team (or solo or duet) routine scores, so everyone s individual skills and effort makes a huge different to how the team does as a whole!! Some things Judges are looking for: stability, height out of water, strength and speed No flash photography is ever permitted at a Synchro Meet! During figures the pool is to be quiet. No applause or cheering is permitted as this is a time for concentration by the athletes and judges. Save your cheering for the Routines! 5

6 This is when the athletes finally gets to do the routine or routines they have been working so hard on! All their hard work, training, dedication and athleticism comes through now! Routines may be a team a solo or a duet. Events are organized into Provincial Stream, National Stream, Masters and sometimes others such as University. Within the Provincial and National Stream groups they are also organized by age group. Routines have time limits, for instance currently a provincial stream team routine has a time limit of 3:30 minutes (+/- 15 seconds). Their walk on must be 30 seconds or less, timed from the first athlete crossing the starting point until they are all stationary, any deck work at that point must be 10 seconds or less. Then once they hit the water the 3:30 minute limit starts. Routines may also have required technical elements. The athletes often wear special routine suits. These are often designed by the coaches with input from swimmers earlier in the year and are specially made for each person. All swimmers must have their hair up in a bun (matching heights) and gelled in place. This means it will be covered in Knox Gelatin! This keeps their hair in place while they swim. They also use some waterproof make-up. The athletes do not wear goggles during the routine competition, just nose clips. They also have an extra set of nose clips clipped into their suit in case of accidents (these happen!) Applause and cheering is allowed now! 7 The ROUTINE score is made up of three components: 1. Execution execution of the routine and synchronization 2. Artistic Impression choreography, music interpretation & manner of presentation 3. Difficulty how hard it is to achieve, difficulty of movements and difficulty of synchronization Solo routine in front of a panel of judges For some events there is also a Championship Score. This is the total score for the routine when the figure scores are calculated in. The figure score of each team member included making up 50% or more of the total championship score. At every meet whether it is a training meet or competitive meet there is time allotted on the schedule before each event for the swimmers to warm up. This may include swimming lengths and practicing figures and parts of routines. When the warm-up time is over the referee will blow their whistle and all swimmers get out of the water and prepare for the event. Stretching Prior to the official scheduled warm up the coach will go through some stretching and warm up with the athletes on land. They may also land drill before a routine event. Land drilling is where they practice the routine on land. Land drill is essential in synchronized swimming. Land drill includes determining counts, setting patterns, clarifying position presentation, and practising movements out of the pool. Land drilling 7
