1 HOW THE OVERALL S WORKS There are 4 Levels of achievement that a camper can earn in 11 Clinics at camp: Amateur, Competent, Proficient, and Specialist. Four clinics of the eleven (Bible, Crafts, Nature, and Swim) are general education requirements whereby a camper MUST have at least a Competent level of achievement to complete an overall S requirement. An overall S winner means a person achieved a certain level in a number of clinics. Overall Amateur S Requirement Explanation (Worth 25 pts. toward Total Team Score) An overall Amateur S winner has completed at least a Competent S in Bible, Crafts, Nature, and Swim. Then of the other seven clinics (Archery, Canoe, High Adventure, Martial Arts, Mountain Biking, Track, and Weight Training) they each achieved at least a Competent S in 4 out of the 7. Having an Amateur S in every clinic at camp does NOT award a camper an overall Amateur S. Overall Competent (Worth 50 pts.), Proficient (Worth 75 pts.), and Specialist S (Worth 100 pts.) Requirement Explanation An overall Competent S winner means a person completed at least a Competent S in all 11 clinics at camp. An overall Proficient S winner means a person completed at least a Proficient S in all 11 clinics at camp. An overall Specialist S winner means a person completed a Specialist S in all 11 clinics at camp. S SUBSTITUTION RULES Two physical requirements may be substituted if there has been a reasonable effort made to pass them evidenced by a camper achieving at least an Amateur S in the category he/she is requesting to substitute. Bible, Crafts, Nature, and Swim may not be substituted and may not be used to substitute. All substitutions must be made only once the entire S is completed except for what needs to be substituted. The following substitutions ONLY may be considered: Any larger requirement (i.e. any Proficient requirement may be considered a substitution for a Competent requirement provided that a camper already has an Amateur S in the clinic in question.) GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS BIBLE BIBLE builds a camper s basic understanding of studying Scripture and instills the importance of devotional time with God. Through memorization of Scripture campers learn to live Psalm 119:11. Campers will also take time to journal about what God is doing in their life through camp. As campers develop a deeper understanding of their faith in Jesus Christ, through studying the word, they will be better prepared to boldly proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to all who will hear. Memory Verses Journal Daily Questions Share the Gospel Share their Testimony

2 CRAFTS CRAFTS creates and constructs projects with purpose. We help campers develop psychomotor skills and personal preferences in the use of materials, color, and design. Campers receive the freedom to experiment with materials and processes to do their own work. The results are finished projects and crafting skills that campers are proud to take home with them, and they ultimately get a sense for the purpose of creation from God s perspective. Handle tools safely Care of tools and facility Complete projects 4 pts 8 pts 12 pts Tool identification Hand Tools Tool identification Power Tools 3 5 (9) Hand Tools: Hammer, Handsaw, Flat- head Screwdriver, Phillips- head Screw Driver, Tape Measurer, Adjustable Slip knot Pliers, Flashlight, Shop Vac, and Level. (9) Power Tools: Drill Press, Circular Saw, Scroll Saw, Ban Saw, Screw Gun, Drill Driver, Table Saw, Chop Saw, and Sander. NATURE NATURE is an introduction to God s creation. Being outside without knowing the names of trees and plants is like walking in a strange city without knowing the names of streets and buildings. It is so much more interesting to look at the oak, pine, maple, etc. than to just look at trees. Identify poison ivy Identify trees SWIMMING SWIMMING seeks to help campers feel safe, at ease, and mobile in the water. Swimming occurs daily for 45 minutes. A swim leader will facilitate that time and each group will have a group leader. The group leader is responsible for marking up S s of any camper who finishes the S with them. Each swim group leader will receive the S requirements for the group they are teaching as part of their swim group S chart. Rules: No Running, No Horseplay of any kind, No Diving, Bathroom trips must be accompanied by a counselor, No slides until S requirements are achieved Safety Procedures: 1 whistle blow = Attention 2 whistle blows = No horseplay 3 whistle blows = out of the pool immediately Safety rules Demo Freestyle 25 yd swim 25 yd swim 25 yd swim Demo Breaststroke 25 yd swim 25 yd swim 25 yd swim Demo Backstroke 25 yd swim 25 yd swim Tread 1 min 1 min 30 sec 2 min 30 sec

3 CLINIC S REQUIREMENTS ARCHERY ARCHERY aims to teach accuracy with the bow and arrow in a context where campers become concerned for safety and the welfare of others. Learning proper techniques, equipment handling, and the principles behind the shooting process teaches patience and perseverance. In addition archery provides an easy way to explain sin using the Greek word hamartia, which means, to miss the mark. Safety rules Proper care and use of equipment Parts of bow and arrow Scoring system Six arrow at 10 yards 15 pts 20 pts 25 pts CANOE CANOE coaches campers to maneuver in water using a canoe and paddle. Becoming skilled in canoeing, will also help them feel safe and at ease in the water. New awareness of canoeing dangers and the skills needed to avoid them will instill an active caution in campers that lets them enjoy the water as they take steps to keep it a safe experience, giving us opportunities to debrief ideas such as paddling against the current in life, drifting away, and exercising vision to steer our proverbial life boats in the right direction. Safety Rules Parts Properly launch canoe Properly beach canoe In s and Out s in shallow water Paddle Distance Across Lake/Back SOLO SOLO In s and Out s in deep water Solo J, Draw, Sweep strokes HIGH ADVENTURE (Only Climbing Wall Currently) HIGH ADVENTURE consists of three vertical activities and identifying knots and equipment. The wall contains a variety of climbs to test the climbing skills at different levels. The faith pole is designed to build trust and empower individuals to move beyond their self- imposed limitations. Like our other high adventure activities, safety is key. After the experience, having confronted themselves and met the physical and spiritual challenge, campers may become more secure and more confident in their identity and abilities. High Adv also provides a context to reference aiming high, reaching out, and setting goals. Safety procedure Equipment Climb Left wall Right Wall Middle Wall Demonstrate hitches Demonstrate knots (6) Knots Figure 8, Figure 8 follow through, Bowline, Bowline on a bite, Butterfly, Fisherman s knot, (3) Hitch Clove, Half, Girth Equipment ATC belay device, Figure 8 rappel device, Helmet, Seat harness, Chest harness, Dynamic rope, Static rope, Webbing

4 MARTIAL ARTS MARTIAL ARTS teaches basic self- defense so campers can build confidence. Learning proper technique and principles of martial arts will develop discipline in the midst of potentially adverse circumstances. Paul spoke of beating his body and bringing it into submission and the purpose of us teaching martial arts here is to learn to master our minds and bodies, bringing them in submission to the Lord. S Requirements Amateur Competent Proficient Specialist Identify Basic Punches Identify Kicks Identify Combinations Perform Basic Punches 2/4 Punches 3/4 Punches 4/4 Punches Perform Basic Kicks 2/4 Kicks 3/4 Kicks 4/4 Kicks Perform Basic Combos 4/8 Combos 6/8 Combos 8/8 Combos Four Punches: jab(1), cross(2), hook(3), uppercut (4) Basic Punch Combos 1-2 (Jab, Cross) (Jab, Jab, Jab, Cross) (Jab, Cross, Hook) (Jab, Cross, Hook, Uppercut) Four Kicks: front/snap kick, side, roundhouse, ax/hammer kick Basic Kick Combos 1-2 (Jab, Cross), Front/Snap Kick 1-2 (Jab, Cross), Roundhouse Kick Side Kick, Spin Side Kick Front Kick, Roundhouse Kick, Side Kick MOUNTAIN BIKING MOUNTAIN BIKING teaches proper techniques of riding a mountain bike and basic maintenance to keep a bike operating in good working order. As campers become more proficient, they will be able to identify the parts of a mountain bike and perform maneuvers important to riding a bike on trails, providing us the opportunity to instruct campers regarding bumpy roads, crooked turns, and hills to climb in life. Safety Rules/Procedures Identify Basic Parts Equipment Maintenance Fix derailed Chain All; Change a flat All, adjust brakes Riding Skills (Foot Touches) 5 allowed 4 allowed 3 allowed Technical Skills TRACK & FIELD TRACK & FIELD teaches proper technique in running and jumping. Of all games and sports, running and jumping are the oldest, most basic forms of competition, where nothing more than a human body is required. Campers learn how to efficiently push their God- given bodies to limits they never thought possible. Campers will also gain a new appreciation for individual type athletics as they prepare themselves for the track meet, all the while learning to run the race of the Christian life set before them.
