3 The tile producing companies that now make up the Ceramics Division of Norcros, based in Stoke-on- Trent, have been providing a swimming pool tile service for well over 50 years. Swimming pools all over the world have been tiled using products made by what is now known as H&R Johnson Tiles Ltd. Over the years the range has changed significantly to reflect the developments in swimming pool application and design. Greater emphasis has been applied to multi-disclipinary leisure complexes and pools for the private sector. Combined with the advances in manufacturing technology, these changes have re-shaped the pool tile package to its present form. One thing which has not changed is Johnson s dedication to providing a complete service from the conception design stage through product specification and supply to after sales maintenance. H&R Johnson s tiles are made to the highest performance and quality standards, making them an ideal choice for competition pools. There are gritted glazed tiles for the pool tank to allow sureness of grip. The lane and poolside markings are formed with crisp colours and the tiles of the pool surround have slip-resistant profiled surfaces. Gala pools utilised by the public, schools and swimming clubs are also built to exacting standards and here the specifier can use bespoke murals and friezes to incorporate striking colours and details into the design.

17 TECHNICAL ADVICE FOR THE SWIMMING POOL Lane Markings Length The short Course Championships (ASA) are swum over a course of 25m but up to 33.5m is also accepted. Long Course Championships (ASA/FINA) are swum over a course of 50m. Width Multiples of 2.0m (short course) and 2.5m (long course) are recommended with an additional 1m to allow for two 0.5m areas outside the outer lanes. Short course pools have a recommended minimum width of 13m and maximum of 17m whereas Long course pools are 21m & 25m respectively. Depth A minimum water depth of 1.0m is recommended for short course pools but 1.8m is preferred. Long course pools have a minimum requirement of 1.8m. Diving The ideal size of a diving pool is 32m x 21m x 5.5m deep but other recommended sizes are 25m x 20m and 25m x 16.5m. In practice, though, the size of a diving pool is governed by the size(s) of other pools in the complex. Depths vary according to the height of springboard or platform to be used. Water depth for a 1m springboard is 3.5m (3.3 for a 1m platform). For a 3m springboard the minimum water depth is 3.8m (3.6m for a 3m platform). 5m, 7.5m and 10m platforms have minimum depths of 4.0m, 4.5m and 5.0m respectively. The pool bottom should be in a mid blue for best perception of the water surface. Water Polo Minimum length, width and depth vary considerably dependent upon the level of competition being played. The mural service incorporating water jet - cut and digital art technology can reproduce any scheme or art form in ceramic. Our design service can meet the most demanding deadlines and we can provide detailed coloured layout drawings and quantities to help the specifier on disc or paper. The CAD design service uses an Intergraph Microstation 95 System which is directly compatible with the majority of CAD systems. The design service is interlinked with the Fixing and Installation Specification service. Our philosophy is simply to design a pool layout which works with products that are fit for purpose and to provide a fixing specification which will ensure that these products are installed correctly. The pool fittings ensure that all the health and safety requirements of any building are achieved by providing smooth edges to internal and external corners, colour highlighted step and pool edges, and safe access and passage over potentially wet and slippery areas. The special fittings are now rectified prior to firing which has significantly reduced the size tolerance of the Architectural pool fittings. This manufacturing development has resulted in a superior extruded fittings range unrivalled in the marketplace. Fixing The swimming pool tank tiles are manufactured to the strictest quality standard requirements contained in EN176 (BS6431 Part 6). The tiles are made by a quality assured company to the requirements of EN ISO 9001 TUV Cert standard. The dry pressed nature of the tank tiles ensures the best dimensional properties to which tiles can be manufactured. The tile body is frost resistant with a low water absorption and has an indented back panel which is designed to afford preferred adhesion to the backing substrate. All H&R Johnson Swimming Pool tile products should be fixed with quality assured adhesive and grout materials and installed in accordance with the appropriate code of practice guidelines, eg. BS5385 Part 3 and Part 4.
