2 Sharks Swim Team Come out and swim with the Sharks! The YMCA Swim Team has every level of swimmer from beginner to national qualifier. The Sharks are a member of USA Swimming and also compete in the YMCA division of the USA Competitive Swimming. Participation on the team can improve endurance, self-confidence, discipline, and technique. Head Coach: Tony DeBrota cell: (317) ADeBrota@warsawschools.org Assistant Coaches: Ryan Harper and Eric Mohler Qualifications: Individuals must be able to swim one length of a 25 yard pool feeling comfortable enough to put their face in the water while doing the front crawl with rotary breathing. Also, individuals must be at least 5 years of age and YMCA Members. Where/When is Practice? Summer Season: April 17 through July 15 See page 6 for levels April 17 June 2 Warsaw Community High School Pool Bronze Swim: Monday-Friday 5:30-6:30 p.m. Silver/Gold/Platinum Swim: Monday-Friday 5:00-7:00 p.m. High School Strength and Conditioning: Tuesday & Thursday 4:00-5:00 p.m. June 5-July 15 Warsaw Community High School Pool & YMCA Bronze: Monday-Thursday, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Swim at the HS Silver/Gold/Platinum: Monday-Thursday, 5:00-7:00 p.m. Swim at the HS Middle and High School M/W/F morning (time TBA) weights at the High School and T/Th swim at the Y 7:00-9:00 a.m. The week of July 3-9, no weights or swim practice. 2

3 Backstroke start: Consists of using the starting block while in the water to begin a Backstroke event. Break out: The transition from the push off mode into the full swimming pattern. Breaststroke kick (whip or frog kick): Where the legs and feet come apart in a symmetrical motion keeping the feet under the water. Catch phase: The beginning part of the stroke where the arms and hands start to propel the body. Dive start: Using the starting blocks or diving into the water from the side of the pool as opposed to pushing off from the side while in the water. Dolphin kick: Used in the Butterfly where the thrust of the kick comes from the hips, and the feet and legs are held together. Flip turn: Competitive racing turn by utilizing a somersault where the feet push off from the wall. Flutter kick: Used in both Freestyle and Backstroke where the feet and toes are pointed and kick the water in an alternating motion. Individual Medley: Refers to an event in which the four competitive strokes are done equally in the order of Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle. Individual Medley = IM Open turn: Noncompetitive turn by touching the wall with one hand and pushing off with the feet. Push off: Refers to pushing off from the wall and into the streamline position. Recovery phase: The conclusion of the stroke where the hand and arms finish pulling and set up to start the next stroke cycle. Taper workouts: Done a few days to a few weeks prior to an important race (usually at the end of a season). Depending on your training style and plan for racing, your taper workout may be just dropping yards off your total yards for your daily workout for a week, or it could mean gradually tapering off from 4,000 yards a day to 2,500 during the two three week period prior to a racing period. Many competitive swimmers (particularly men) shave their body hair at the end of the taper period and just before the important race. This is thought to provide less drag and a better feel for the water in addition to providing a psychological advantage. Taper workouts will be provided to those swimmers who would like to compete. Transition: Generally refers to the change of strokes in the Individual Medley event. For example: the transition from Butterfly to Backstroke. Swimset = S Fly = F Back = Ba Breaststroke = Br Cancelled Practice Procedure: If the weather is bad, please call the YMCA ( ) or listen to WRSW to see if practice is still being held. If practice is cancelled for any other reason, notification will be sent via , text (see page 11) and a note will be posted on the Warsaw High School pool doors. Please be aware of the team calendar and scheduled days off. Fees Try out our Team Two Week Trial $20 - two consecutive weeks. Must be able to swim 25 yards of front crawl with rotary breathing. There is only one (1) tryoutper season-per child. If the child decides to become a member of the team the $20 fee will be applied to their full season dues. Summer Season Fees Fees will be auto-drafted on the 17th of each month. April 17, May 17, June 17 Three days of practice a week- $38/month. Five days of practice a week- $60/month. If you are practicing 3 days a week and you want to move up to practicing 5 days a week, please contact Tony. If you choose to take a month off you need to notify the YMCA Welcome Center by the 12th of the preceding month. USA Swimming Card Fee (Required) - $35.50 Covers summer only. Every swimmer must be a current member of USA swimming. This is our insurance and allows us to go to invitational meets with better competition. (Two week trial participants do not need one of these cards until they join the team). Team Caps - Silicone ($9.00) and Latex swim caps ($4.00) are available for purchase at the YMCA Welcome Center. YMCA Membership - (Required) All children need to become a member of the YMCA before participation on the team can occur. You do not have to be a Y member for the two week trial. Free = Fr Page

4 Meet Surcharges All fees are paid at the Kosciusko Community YMCA Welcome Center. No payments will be accepted at the Warsaw High School pool. Meet fees will automatically be drafted the week following the meet. Types of Meets Winter and Summer Season 1. YMCA Dual Meets Are between two local YMCA teams. They are usually within an hour s drive. During the Winter Season, swim in 3 dual meets to qualify to swim at Y State. High School swimmers must swim in 2 YMCA Dual Meets. 2. Invitational -This type of meet is hosted by various teams and anyone who wishes to may attend. These meets are usually held on the weekends and can be two or three days long. The cost of this meet is determined by number of races at the meet. 3. YMCA State - This is our team s final big meet during the Winter season. If a swimmer competes in three or more YMCA Dual Meets they are eligible to attend. The cost of this meet is determined by number of races at the meet. 4. Championship Meets-Swimmers must qualify for these meets during the regular season. Time qualifications will be handed out by the coaches at the first Winter/Summer Season Parents Meeting and put into your child's swim team folder. These types of meets would include Divisional, Age Group and Senior State, and any form of Nationals. The cost of these meets are determined by number of races at the meet. Swimming Lingo Parts of the Workout Warm-up: The beginning part of the workout. Usually builds in intensity, gearing your body and mind for more intense swimming. Warm-up = WU Kicking: Using only the legs for propulsion. Sometimes done with the use of a kickboard. Kicking = K Pulling: Using little or no kick to focus on the upper body. Sometimes using paddles and/or a pull buoy. Pulling = P Main set: That part of the workout usually 20 minutes in duration in which the heart rate is elevated. Drill set: Focuses on one part of a particular stroke. Most commonly meant to be done with precision, not speed. Drill = D Cool down: The concluding part of the workout in which the heart rate should be gradually lowered. Cool Down = CD Sprinting: Refers to short intense swims of usually not more than 100 yards, usually Red Zone swimming. Easy: Refers to a distance of relaxed swimming used as part of a recovery from a more intense set of swims. Easy = E Build: Getting progressively faster within a swim. Example: 1 x 400, build by 100's. The pace should increase after each 100, but one should not stop swimming until the 400 yards are completed. Descend: Swim progressively faster within a set of repeats. Example: 3 x 100 Freestyle at 2:00 descend; swim times could be 1:35, 1:33, 1:28. Descend = Rest interval: A specific and constant period one should wait between swims in a given set. Example: 6 x 75 Backstroke at RI :15 is six 75-yard Backstroke swims with 15 seconds rest after each one. Negative split: Swim the second half of a distance faster than the first half. Example: 2 x 400 Freestyle Negative Split-the second 200 of each 400 should be swum a few seconds faster than the first, but there should not be a break between the 200s. Pace: Hold a steady speed throughout a set, often trying to match a goal race tempo. Example: 4 x 50 Breaststroke at 1:00 holding a 200 race pace. Most people can swim shorter distances at a faster average speed than they can hold for longer distances. This instruction says to swim all four 50's at the average speed one would normally do a 200. Sculling: A relaxing motion using the hands in a back and forth motion under the water. Used to feel the water, especially for warm-ups, cool downs, and easy swims. Use a flutter or whip kick. 5 This is a copy of what you fill out when registering: You have filled out payment information and signed the following: I hereby authorize the Kosciusko Community YMCA to electronically draft my monthly Swim Team fee on or around the 17th of each month from the account I have provided. Payments cover from the 17th of one month to the 17th of the next month. I will let the YMCA know if I will not be swimming for a month by the 12th of the month before the one I am not swimming. Meet fees will be electronically drafted the week following the meet. I must keep the YMCA informed of any changes in address or account information. Changes must be made in writing before the 12th of the month or will be treated as a returned draft. All returned drafts are automatically sent through a second time. The YMCA charges a $25 return fee on all unpaid drafts. I will be responsible for any fees charged by the YMCA and my bank. You have initialed in the blanks and signed that you have read and agree with the following: I understand that KCYMCA assumes no responsibility for injuries or illnesses which my child may sustain as a result of his/her participation in athletic activities, sports programs, the use of any equipment, exercise or other activities. I expressly acknowledge that I assume the risk for any and all injuries and illnesses which may result from his/her participation in these activities. In consideration of the privilege of participating in the Swim Team, I hereby voluntarily release and discharge KCYMCA, its agents, contract services, and employees from any and all claims of injury, illness, death, loss or damage which my child may suffer as a result of his/her participation in these activities. In the event that I cannot be reached in an emergency, I hereby give my permission to the medical personnel selected by KCYMCA to order X-rays, routine tests, treatment, to release any records necessary for insurance purposes, and to provide or arrange necessary related transportation for my child. I understand that no accident or medical insurance is carried on program participants. While KCYMCA will make every effort to provide reasonable accommodations for mentally and physically challenged children, the YMCA will not accept children who are (1) a danger to themselves, (2) a danger to others, or (3) a disruption to the normal activities making it unreasonably difficult for other children to enjoy the Swim Team. Any of the above will be grounds for dismissal. A parent/guardian must discuss special conditions or circumstances involving their child with the director prior to registration so that a determination of reasonable accommodations can be made. 6 Skills for Each Level of Swimmer The levels are determined by your child s swimming skills and a child may move from lane to lane on different days depending on the workout for any given day. Levels will be based on swimming skills and not by age. The final level placement decisions will be up to the coaches discretion. Bronze Swimmer swims 2/3 days a week First or second year on the team Swims 25 yards of Freestyle Swims 25 yards of Backstroke May have a little Breaststroke Introduce turns and starts May have a little Butterfly Silver Swimmer swims 3/4 days a week May have swim team experience, may be first season Swims a strong Freestyle with flip turns Swims a strong Backstroke Starting to swim Breaststroke Starting to swim Butterfly Working on other stroke turns along with starts Developing in 100/200 IM Can follow a pace clock at practice Miscellaneous Kosciusko Community YMCA Swim Team has Team Guidelines that are outlined in this handbook. These guidelines are to be strictly followed. The Head Coach reserves the right to dismiss without refund any swimmer for misconduct and/or disciplinary reasons that are deemed unsuitable and detrimental to the best interest of the team. Each member and that member s parents will be asked to sign a form relating to the reading and understanding of the guidelines. A payment policy will also be distributed to each team member. This policy has been set by the YMCA. All members must complete a medical history/ emergency form. This form will need to be re-submitted annually and will be kept with the Head Swim Coach. To be able to swim at YMCA Nationals, you must swim in 3 YMCA meets, YMCA sanction invitation will count, and participate in the YMCA State Swim Meet. There are qualifying times for Y Nationals. Gold Swimmer swims 4/5 days a week Has swim experience Swims a strong Freestyle with flip turns Swims a strong Backstroke with flip turns Swims a strong Breaststroke with correct turns and pullouts Swims Butterfly (may be working on stroke a little and has turns) Can legally swim a 200 IM in meets Can follow a pace clock at practice 6 11

7 Expenditures Any money spent on behalf of the Swim Team must have prior approval of the Aquatics Director. Meet Sign-up Each swimming family will have a folder at the high school pool that needs to be checked regularly. In this folder will be information about the Swim Team such as newsletters, upcoming events, ribbons, etc. For dual meets there will be an athlete roster posted on the swim team bulletin boards at the Community Pool. If you are NOT planning to swim at a specific meet you need to cross your child s name off the list. If you are not crossed off, your child will be entered into the meet and charges for the meet will be added to your YMCA account. For meets more than one day long, you may list what days you can attend. Do not the coach about participation in a meet. To be entered in an Invitational you and your swimmer will be required to fill out a meet form and return it to Coach by a certain date in order to be entered in the meet. These are the meets that swimmers are allowed to choose what they would like to swim. The return date is very important because the coach has a meet entry deadline that has to be met! This system will be used to inform you on any swim information about meets, practice changes, etc. You will need to do this at the beginning of each swim season. The list will be erased at the end of each season to keep our list current. 10 Platinum Swimmer swims 5 days a week Has swim experience and is committed to the sport of swimming. Swims strong legal free/back/breast/butterfly with appropriate turns Can swim all events at a swim meet Can swim a timed set in practice and follow a pace clock Discipline Policy The YMCA swim team will follow the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility and show sportsmanship at practice and speak kindly to team members. Examples of offensive behavior: Poor sportsmanship, talking back to coach or parents. Swearing. Hitting and/or causing physical pain to another member of the team (including siblings). Any behavior during meets that reflects poorly on the team. Bullying, harassment, inappropriate words or names toward team members. Penalties: First Offense Swimmer will be asked to leave practice or the meet. Parents will be notified by the coach. Second Offense- Swimmer will be asked to leave practice for three days. Parent must call the Coach, and discuss the problem prior to the swimmer returning to practice. Third Offense- Swimmer will be suspended from practice for a week. Parent must bring child to practice before the swimmer will be able to return to practice to discuss the situation with the Coach. Fourth Offense- Swimmer will be asked to leave the team for the season. 7

In order to help in this way it involves a one night training session, an internet test, and some simple shadowing. Let the coaches be coaches. Their job is demanding enough without taking on additional responsibilities. Volunteer to head up a committee. A successful team is full of helpful parents! Cross the swimmers name off the Dual Meet list if you do not plan on attending the meet. You WILL be charged for the meet if you do not do this. Let both the coach and the YMCA Welcome Center know if you are not going to swim for a month. Let the YMCA Welcome Center know if your billing information changes. 9 8
