9 VOLLEYSTARS Winter Sports Carnival Day Wodonga South PS 1. UMPIRES. Student teachers from LA TROBE UNIVERSITY will be umpiring all games. We look forward to these students umpiring on the day. We ask that everyone support and encourage them on carnival day. Each team must have an adult (Parent/Teacher) supervisor to act as overseer or emergency umpire if required.. There are two divisions, Volleystars will have an A section and a B section. Schools with more than one team in any section, should field teams of even strength within that section. There will be a trophy for both sections. 3. ALL sections will run to the same timetable. i.e. Games on ALL courts will start and finish at the same time. Games will last for 0 minutes with 5 minutes break between Rounds. NOTE: Teams are recommended to swap ends at the 10 minute mark of each game. 4. Winners are decided on a percentage basis (points FOR divided by points AGAINST). Each team should strive to achieve the maximum number of points whilst keeping the opposition to a minimum. I.E. Only one game is played during the 0 or 1 minute round. Do not stop at 15. Games won may not be counted but the only way to boost a team s percentage is by winning games. The percentage method gives a team that loses narrowly, a fighting chance to the end and keeps winning teams on their toes. 5. RULES: These are notes attached. Please try to be as familiar as possible on the rules of the game. 6. FIRST AID: Facilities are available at Wodonga South PS however we encourage every school to supply their own First Aid kits. 7. Individual schools are encouraged to arrange their own lunch / drink breaks whenever possible. 8. NOTE: There will be NO CANTEEN at the school. Children MUST be prepared and bring ALL food and drink requirements. Drinking taps are nearby. Visiting Staff are welcome to use staffroom facilities (coffee, tea, restrooms) and note that food shop is located next to the school in Jarrah Street (NO student access to this shop is available). REMEMBER: NO CANTEEN

29 Minkey 010 Host: St Augustine s (Lauren O Shea) General Information: First team named on draw hits towards Catholic College and supplies match ball. Team must supply own hockey sticks. Mouth guards and shin guards are highly recommended. There are no goal keepers Umpires are provided by the Wodonga Hockey Club. Layout: Ground 4 Ground 3 Ground Ground 1 Car Park Rules: 1. The game is played by two teams and 7 to 10 players with no more than 7 players from each team being on the field at once. The additional reserve players may interchange freely during the game.. Minkey is played with junior hockey sticks. These have one flat side and the curved back of the stick may not be used to stop or propel the ball. The stick must be no more than 5.1cm broad and should be no longer than the players hip height. 3. A hockey ball of approximately 0cm circumference and 100g weight should be used. 4. The game is commenced with a hit/push back from the centre spot. At the time of commencement each team must be in their own goal side of the centre spot. After each goal is scored the team against which the goal has been scored will take possession to restart the game from the centre spot. 5. There is no offside rule in Minkey and a goal may be scored from anywhere within the opposing teams defensive zone (within 10m of the goal line). 6. A goal is scored when the ball passes over the opponent s goal line between the goalposts/cones after having hit/pushed by an attacking player s stick. The team that scores the most goals is the winner. 7. Players are not permitted to: a) Raise the stick above the shoulder b) Hit the stick into an opponent c) Use the stick to obstruct an opponent reaching the ball or moving about the field d) Play the ball with their hands or feet except when defending a penalty push e) Raise the ball above knee height f) Criticise or ridicule another player g) Obstruct an opponent from playing the ball by moving the ball or any part of his/her body in between the opponent and the ball 8. Rough and dangerous play is not permitted and body contact must be avoided. 9. A free hit may be awarded to the opponents for any breach of the rules. At the time that a free hit is taken no other player must be within 5m of the ball.

30 10. For deliberate breach of the rules by a defender within the 10m zone the attacking team will be awarded a penalty push at goal from the 5m penalty spot. Only one defender may defend the penalty push standing on the goal line inside the goal until the push is taken. All other players will stand outside the defensive zone. The defending player may use the stick or body to stop the penalty push. The player taking the penalty push may not play the ball again after the initial push nor approach the defender. 11. For an accidental breach by a defender in the defensive zone the attacking team will be awarded a free hit at a point on the 10m line opposite the point where the breach occurred. 1. A defender may not deliberately play the ball over his/her own goal line. When the ball is played over the goal line outside the goal by an attacker, or accidentally by a defender, the defending team will be awarded a free hit on the 10m line opposite where the ball went out of play. 13. When the ball is played over the sideline the opposing team will be awarded a free hit at the point where the ball crossed the line. 14. Where the rules of Minkey do not provide for a situation that arises, the umpire/guide shall give a decision bearing in mind the objectives and spirit of the game.
