1 Frequently Asked Questions 1. What is the mission of USTA Player Development?? The mission of USTA Player Development is too develop world class American players through a clearly defined training structure and competitive pathway as well as through the implementation of a comprehensive coaching philosophy and structure. 2. How do you define the USTA Player Development t pathway? The USTA Player Development Pathway is broken down into four areas: 10 and Under Tennis, Junior Competition, Collegiate Competition, and Professional Tennis. 10 and Under Tennis: The modified formats create a controlled environment that allow for players to learn the fundamental skillss needed to be successful while having fun. The focus is to develop more players who display the competencies required to train and compete at the highest level of each format. Junior Competition: The junior competitive system is a key element in our Player Development Pathway. Junior tournaments help players advance their game through local, sectional, national, and international competition. The intention is to provide appropriate developmental competitive opportunities that are affordable and that do not require an excessive amount of time away from school. Collegiate Competition: The majority of junior players should aspire to play college tennis. Some of thesee players will have the opportunity too move on to a professional career. There will be some exceptions who will attempt to make the jump from junior tennis to the professional ranks, based on an assessment of their results at the junior and/or professional level (Pro Circuit events). Professional Tennis: The USTA s player development pathway now proceeds from USTA junior tennis, ITF junior circuit and collegiate tennis to the professional ranks. An aspiring pro may take any of a number of thesee pathways. 3. What is the teaching and coaching philosophy of USTA Playerr Development? USTA Player Development (USTAPD) adheres to a teaching and coaching philosophy that encompasses the entire continuum of Player Development and is applicable to athletes at all stages of development. The foundation of the philosophy is the belief that coaches should teach and develop the fundamental skills that enable the player to have the most complete game possible. The Five Principles of thee Teaching & Coaching Philosophy are:

2 a. Patience: Teaching tennis takes tremendous self control, passion, and discipline from the coach and player. b. Progressions: Everything that is taught must follow ordered progressions based on the fact that the game of tennis is played first, with the mind and eyes, secondly with the feet, and finally with the hands. In teaching the game, the progression should be taught in the opposite order: hands (grips and swing paths), feet (movement) and eyes/mind (ball recognition and strategy). c. Parameters: From the onset of training, teaching must be executed carefully using proper technique within a range of acceptability. d. Planning and Goals: Player development plans should be devised and designed jointly by the player and coach (the more advanced the player is, the more input the player should provide) based on clearly defined performance goals. e. Problem Solving: Players need to learn how to think independently and develop self reliance. The coach s role should be to show the player the correct path to follow. 4. How is USTA Player Development involved with developing players? Regional Training Center Camps: Enables Player Development the opportunity to give juniors in the Sections an opportunity to receive High Performance training near their homes as well as competitive opportunities for talented juniors who might not otherwise be able to afford the training. The camps help develop relationships between the players, parents, and personal coaches. Regional Training Centers (In House Programs): Allows USTA Player Development to create extensions of the National Training Centers, where players have organized year round training that is in line with the USTA Player Development Teaching and Coaching Philosophy. The players stay connected to USTAPD through regular communication with USTAPD staff, personal coaches and parents. National Training Center Camps: There are training opportunities at one of the three National Training Centers. Players come together from across the country to train for various amounts of time, participate in wild card events, and prepare for international travel. National Training Centers: Training takes place for players who have applied and been selected to train full time at one of our three National Training Centers (Boca Raton, FL, Carson, CA,or Flushing, NY). 5. 16 o Junior Events for College Coaches USTAPD assists tournament directors and section staff at making their 16s and 18s events more college coach friendly. At USTAPDrun events, college coaches are provided with player Bio Books to assist them in their recruiting of American players. o Fall Tournaments: Orlando, Napa, Portland USTA Juniors square off against college teams in a dual match format. Coaching Education Programming for College Coaches Some examples of Advocacy Programming include: Information Sessions, Showcases, & Forums Events to assist American junior tennis players in the recruiting process through education and exposure. o Information Session Informational meeting on college tennis and the recruiting process. Generally open to junior tennis players (in high school), their parents, and their coaches. Lasts 1 2 hours with 1 2 speakers or a panel for Q&A. o Showcase An opportunity for junior players to play in front of college coaches in organized match play. o Forum These types of events are extremely popular at bigger tournaments where college coaches recruit generally these must take place after July 1. Preparation and Publication of the USTA Guide to Tennis on College Campuses Campus Showdowns One day, short format tournaments held on college campuses that are open to junior players, college players, professionals, and adults. Campus Kids Days Designated college dual matches that have programming for kids and parents. Designed to get kids exposed to college tennis and to develop an interest at an early age. Campus QuickStart Recognition program highlighting college coaches who are administering 10 and Under Programming on their campuses. College Spotlights on USTA.com Q&A s with our top American college players and coaches. For more information and details regarding USTAPD s collegiate programming, visit: How is USTA Player Development involved in junior competition? The Director of Junior Competition, Lew Brewer, is a USTA Player Development staff member and is Player Development s representative on the USTA Junior Competition Committee. The Director helps to ensure that the philosophy and goals of Player Development are reflected in the activities and programs under the Committee s purview. The Junior Competition staff is responsible for publishing and maintaining the National Junior Ranking system as well as the publishing of the National Junior Tournament Schedule. Player Development also has a major role in the selection of wild cards for USTA National 16

17 Championships. The Junior Competition department is responsible for organizing and supervising all the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Circuit events in the United States. Player Development is directly responsible for the three most important ITF Junior Circuit tournaments in the United States, the US Open Junior Tennis Championships, the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships and the International Spring Championships. 28. Is USTA Player Development involved in sport science? USTAPD is actively involved in Sport Science from three perspectives. First, from a training and player performance point of view, USTAPD has on its staff a group of Strength and Conditioning Specialists and Certified Athletic Trainers who support the efforts and mission of Player Development by working with the athletes that we coach on a daily basis to help them stay healthy and be at peak performance on the tennis court. Second, USTAPD is actively involved in Sport Science through the USTA Sport Science Committee. This Committee is comprised of world leaders in the Sport Sciences. The Committee supports the mission of Player Development by offering counsel on areas of policy and procedures that affect player development, as well as helping to produce, evaluate and disseminate sport science information relevant to tennis. Third, Player Development is active with Sport Science by working with the coaching education department to provide current sport science related information to the coaching community. 29. Can you explain USTA Player Development s Regional Training Centers? The establishment of Regional Training Center s (RTC s) enables us to partner with the best programs in the country, building relationships between our best coaches, and raising the level of training for our best 8 14 year old juniors. The partnerships also make the transition of the very best juniors in the country into our National Program more seamless. Currently, USTA Player Development has partnered with twenty four (24) RTC programs across the country. These programs help train hundreds of our junior players (ages 8 14) close to home and help facilitate relationships between personal coaches and our National Staff. USTAPD tracks the development and performance of these juniors and builds strong relationships with their coaches and parents. Regional Training Centers are important because: A player s technical foundation is built between the ages of 8 and 14. The most critical coaching phase is 8 12 (girls), (boys). Maturity is a function of socialization. It s a TEAM effort. RTC s help us create hubs of collaboration and cooperation, which will greatly increase the number of juniors we develop. 30. How does USTA Player Development interact with Personal Coaches? We work closely with them. Regardless of who the primary coach is, the goal of USTA Player Development is to develop world class American players and to work collaboratively with the primary coach towards that end. The USTA staff is sometimes the primary coach 17

18 for a player and, at other times, a secondary coach. We understand that some players work primarily with another coach and, therefore, it is extremely important that players let us know who their primary coach is so that we can have regular communication. It is the parent s responsibility to let all coaches involved in a child s development know that they are receiving input from various coaches so we can all work together to help the player reach his/her maximum potential. In addition, personal coaches are always welcome to come to any of our training centers or to call any of our coaches regarding a player s development. 31. What would you identify as successes for USTA Player Development? First, the Ten and Under Tennis initiative is certainly a success in terms of getting more kids playing tennis (and at an earlier age) and having a greater number of these players entering the competitive pathway. They are developing better technical skills at an earlier age. Overall, the result is more and better players playing junior tennis. Second, we now have something that we did not have before in the United States a unified coaching philosophy. Third is the success of players that Player Development has worked with and is working with, either primarily or secondarily. The bar has been raised for all of American tennis with the success of American players competing in ITF events and at the highest levels of junior tennis. Hopefully, more and better American players will result in more American players winning junior Grand Slam tournaments and receiving scholarships to play varsity college tennis. Our goal is to have more Top 100 players, more players competing for major titles and Grand Slams, Davis Cup and Fed Cup titles, and Olympic medals. 32. What challenges and opportunities does Player Development have moving forward? Some of the challenges and or opportunities that Player Development sees moving forward are getting more kids playing tennis and attracting talented athletes to tennis. This includes increasing the affordability and accessibility of the game, getting the best young athletes possible interested in playing tennis through 10 and Under Tennis and working closely and in collaboration with the private sector. Other challenges include the global nature of the sport and its popularity, world wide, trying to maximize the resources that Player Development has available, and trying to raise the level of coaching, overall, in the United States. Finally, it is important to recognize the importance of patience in developing players, especially through the USTA s Player Development Program. For many years, the USTA merely facilitated the development of players. It has only been a few years since the USTA has also begun to be fully responsible for developing some young players as summarized in this FAQ. In the long run, the USTA s investment in developing players will pay off, but investments such as the one we are making in developing players will take time to reach fruition. 18
