Arielle Sargent Office Phone Cell Phone ans26@psu.edu Fax Address Bryce Jordan Center University Park, PA NITTANY LIONS SEEK 13TH NCAA NATIONAL TITLE Following a third-place finish at the 2014 Big Ten Championship, the No. 6 Penn State men s gymnastics team has its sights set on capturing its 13th NCAA national team title in program history. The Nittany Lions open competition in the second session of the NCAA national qualifier before vying for the team title in the team and all-around finals. Individual event finals will wrap up Saturday, April 12th. At the 2013 NCAA championship, PSU claimed a fourth-place finish in the team finals. Six Nittany Lions went on to earn All-America status, led by Trevor Howard who earned his first career NCAA title on the floor exercise. Howard headlined the group as the program s third Nittany Lion all-time to win the floor exercise. He was also the first Nittany Lion to earn an NCAA individual event on the floor exercise in 50 years. Last weekend, Howard took home the Big Ten title on the still rings with a career-high performance to earn first team All-Big Ten honors. Craig Hernandez earned second team All-Big Ten honors following a runner-up finish on the pommel horse. 2 2014 NITTANY LIONS MEN S GYMNASTICS EVANS NAMED NISSEN-EMERY FINALIST Senior Adrian Evans has been selected as a finalist for the 2014 Nissen-Emery Award. Widely regarded as one of the most prestigious collegiate men s gymnastics honors, Evans joins eight other student-athletes from around the nation in this year s group of nine finalists. The Nissen-Emery Award is an annual honor presented to the most outstanding senior studentathlete in collegiate gymnastics. A native of Boulder Colo., Evans earned his second consecutive All- America honor on the pommel horse at the 2013 NCAA national championship. Outside of the gym, the 2014 team captain has earned College Gymnastics Association All-America Scholar-Athlete honors in the last three consecutive seasons, while also earning a spot on the Academic All-Big Ten team. Evans is the 26th Nissen-Emery finalist in Penn State program history and the third consecutive Nittany Lion finalist since A total of six PSU gymnasts have gone on to earn collegiate gymnastics highest honor, including the most recent Penn State award winner, Casey Sandy, who captured the top honor in IN-SEASON TOURNAMENT CHAMPS Penn State opened the 2014 season with a firstplace finish at the West Point Open Jan. 17 when they topped the five-team field with a score of The victory marked the 11th consecutive season that the Nittany Lions have recorded at least one inseason invitational title. After capturing the Navy Open title with a top score of the following weekend, Penn State stretched its in-season tournament winning streak to 15. Since their last non-first place finish at the Southwest Cup in 2001, the Lions have one Temple Invitational title, two Southwest Cup titles, three Navy Open crowns and 10 West Point Open trophies during that stretch. EVANS HONORED WITH STUDENT-ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Senior Adrian Evans was one of three Penn State student-athletes honored with a Penn State Student Acheivement Award. Evans was the recipient of the 2014 Ernest B. McCoy Memorial Award. The McCoy Award is presented annually to one senior male and one senior female student-athlete who have combined successful athletic participation with academic excellence. The award is named for Ernest B. McCoy, who was Penn State s Athletic Director and Dean of the College of Physical Education from His name adorns the Penn State natatorium. DUVERGLAS AMONG THE BEST ON VAULT Junior Tristan Duverglas has secured a top-10 positioning within the NCAA rankings on the vault throughout the season. Paced by a season-high score of against Temple (2/8), his unique triple-pike on vault ranks him seventh nationally (15.133). In 2014, Duverglas has vaulted to three first-place finishes including two straight against Temple (2/8) and Illinois (2/15). HOWARD COLLECTS THIRD BIG TEN WEEKLY HONOR After helping Penn State to its sixth consecutive team title of the 2014 season, sophomore Trevor Howard earned his fourth Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honor of the 2014 season. The award brings his career total to 12 weekly honors. Howard led the Nittany Lions with two individual titles in Penn State s victory against sixthranked Minnesota in the regular season home finale. 3 GAME NOTES 2014 NITTANY LIONS MEN S GYMNASTICS Under the direction of Randy Jepson, the 2000, 2004, and 2007 National Coach of the Year, the Penn State men s gymnastics program has carried on the proud tradition of excellence and achievement established by its forbearers. After guiding his teams to three national championships and two Big Ten titles, Jepson serves as a symbol of Penn State s vaunted gymnastics heritage. Testament to his impact upon and dedication to the Penn State program and the sport overall, Jepson received the prestigious CGA Honor Coach Award in Bestowed annually, the Honor Coach Award recognizes CGA member coaches with 25 years or more of service to the sport of gymnastics. Presented with the honor at the NCAA/CGA Awards Banquet in April, Jepson received a special introduction by Bill Ballister, his coach and mentor while at the University of Oregon. A member of the coaching staff since 1983, Jepson was appointed head coach on July 6, 1992, succeeding long-time head coach Karl Schier. During Jepson s coaching tenure at his alma mater, Penn State student-athletes have earned All-America honors 111 times. He has also mentored 16 individual national champions, including Mark Sohn, the first gymnast to win four-consecutive pommel horse national crowns. Jepson also championed the renovation efforts of the White Building, the Penn State training gymnasium, transforming the facility into the top collegiate training site in the country. HEAD COACH RANDYJEPSON Jepon s Background Before his appointment as acting head coach, Jepson spent six seasons as an assistant to Schier, who retired on October 1, Jepson is the sixth head coach in the 72-year history of the Penn State men s gymnastics program and only the third in the last 64 years. Gene Wettstone coached from and was succeeded by Schier, one of his former athletes, who served from Jepson earned the appointment on April of 1991, the year he was named Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for his outstanding work. Seven months prior to that, he coached Mike Masucci to a gold medal in the all-around as head coach of the U.S. team that participated in the Cup of Puerto Rico international meet in San Juan. Masucci also captured gold medals in four events. A native of Portland, Ore., Jepson lettered for three years at the University of Oregon and was an NCAA finalist on the rings his sophomore year. He transferred to Penn State in 1982, when the Ducks dropped their gymnastics program. In his one season as a Nittany Lion, Jepson was captain and won All- America honors on rings. A Nissen-Award nominee as a senior, Jepson posted a perfect score of 10.0 on rings in a meet against a team from the Soviet Union in 1983 at Rec Hall. Jepson joined the Lions coaching staff as a graduate assistant in 1983 and worked in that capacity for two seasons. His first season as an assistant coach was Jepson has been instrumental in guiding Penn State gymnastics to berths on the U.S. Senior National and Developmental squads, and in addition was a member of the 1997 and 2005 USA World Championships coaching staff. A member of the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches, Jepson served as secretary and treasurer of the United States Elite Coaches Association. In years past, Jepson has served men s program director at Woodward Gymnastics Camp in Woodward, Pa. In addition, Jepson directed the North team that won the gold medal at the 1993 United States Olympic Festival. Jepson has also been heavily involved in national team training camps, helping to prepare teams for the 1999 World Championships in China and the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. He was also selected as assistant coach for the 1999 Pan American Games team in Winnipeg, Canada. In 2006, Jepson served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the World Championships and in a meet versus France and Switzerland. In February of 2008, Jepson served as head coach of a six-man U.S. team in a dual meet versus Canada, leading the Americans to victory. Later that year, countless hours spent overseeing the training of world class gymnast and Penn State assistant coach Kevin Tan paid off for Jepson, as Tan realized a lifelong dream by earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team. Jepson served as Tan s personal coach, accompanying him to Beijing, China for the 2008 Summer Games, where he captured a bronze medal in the team competition. Jepson received his master s degree from Penn State in exercise sport and science, with an emphasis in biomechanics, in He and his wife, Sue, a Penn State alum, and their four children - Adam and Anna, who both currently attend Penn State, Emily, and Maggie - reside in Centre Hall. EVANS SELECTED AS TEAM CAPTAIN Prior to the season starting, senior Adrian Evans was selected as the Nittany Lion s team captain. A native of Boulder, Colo., Evans earned his second consecutive All-America honor on the pommel horse at the 2013 NCAA Men s Gymnastics Championships. Outside of the gym, the advertising major and 2014 team captain earned College Gymnastics Association All-America Scholar-Athlete honors the last three seasons, while also earning a spot on the Academic All-Big Ten team. HOWARD EARNS SECOND BIG TEN WEEKLY HONOR After recording his seventh individual title of the season, sophomore Trevor Howard was tabbed the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week. The award marks his second conference weekly honor of the 2014 season and the 11th of his career. Howard helped guide the Nittany Lions to a firstplace finish at the Navy Open ( ) this weekend. He led the way with a trio of top-five finishes, including a first-place finish on the high bar, winning by a season-high score of Competing on the parallel bars, he captured a second-place finish (14.400), before swinging to another second-place finish on the rings. Howard s score on the rings is a personal season-high, as well as the top PSU score for the 2014 season. UNBLEMISHED HOME SLATE Penn State completed their 12th undefeated home schedule under head coach Randy Jepson with a perfect 4-0 mark inside Rec Hall. It is the fourth consecutive season that the Nittany Lions have not dropped a home contest. HOWARD EARNS FIRST CONFERENCE WEEKLY AWARD Penn State s Trevor Howard has been selected as the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week. Howard, who earned his second career Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honor, is the first Nittany Lions to receive league recognition in In 2013, Howard earned a record-setting nine Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, while also picking up one Gymnast of the Week award. The sophomore captured four individual event titles on the way to a first-place finish in the all-around. He opened the night with a score in the floor exercise before securing top finishes on the still rings (15.450), vault (15.00) and parallel bars (15.100). Howard also swung to a score on the high bar NISSEN-EMERY TRADITION The Nissen-Emery Award is the highest honor in collegiate gymnastics. Awarded in recognition of outstanding athletic achievement, academic excellence and sportsmanship, it is equivalent to college football s Heisman Trophy. Presented annually to the top collegiate male senior gymnast in the U.S., the award was originally named the Nissen Award after George Nissen, a former NCAA Champion, for his contributions to the sport. In 1997, it was renamed the Nissen-Emery Award in honor of former Penn State gymnast Dr. Robert Emery for his support of the sport. Emery won the award in Penn State s six recipients ranks second for the most in the award s history. 5 GAME NOTES Penn State has had its fair share of success at the Big Ten Championships, winning the 2008 and 2003 team titles, while claiming 22 individual crowns at the Big Ten Championships since joining the conference in In 22 seasons in the Big Ten, the Nittany Lions have claimed at least one individual title during 11 of those seasons. Six times Penn State has brought home multiple event winners. There have been 30 All-Big Ten pickes that have donned the blue and white over the years, with Kevin Tan ( ) and Derek Helsby ( ) each earning the honors on three occasions. In 1998, Mike Dutka won the all-around, floor exercise, vault and pommel horse. He is one of just four gymnasts since 1980 to win four or more events at a single championship, joining Scott Vetere (Michigan, 2000) and Brian Meeker (Minnesota, 1982), who won four events, and Blaine Wilson (Ohio State, 1997), who claimed five event titles. Of the 22 titles, eight have come on the still rings, four on the parallel bars, three on the pommel horse, two on the high bar and vault and one on the floor exercise. Nittany Lion Trevor Howard has earned a total of three Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors in 2014 after winning eight of the 12 Freshman of the Week awards during the 2013 season. Howard s eight top rookie honors marked the most by any Big Ten freshman, passing C.J. Maestas six honors from Illinois Chandler Eggleston earned five straight to open the 2014 season. The Big Ten office has awarded a Gymnast of the Week award since the 1999 season and handed out the Freshman of the Week accolade since the 2010 season.
