3 SEASON IN REVIEW Season in Review No. 12 Army took on the nation s elite in facing one of the toughest and most challenging schedules in the program s history under head coach Doug Van Everen. But the end result and crowning achievement was a berth to the NCAA Men s Gymnastics Championships, its first since While competing against nationally renowned programs such as Temple, Navy and Illinois-Chicago, the Black Knights book ended their regular-season slate with national power Penn State. Army turned in solid scores on each occasion, despite suffering a pair of losses to the Nittany Lions. In between, Army (10-4) took first place at the All-Academy Championships and finished runner-up to Illinois-Chicago at the ECAC Championships, with the latter clinching the team s spot in this year s NCAAs. After suffering early-season dual losses to Penn State and defending ECAC champion Temple, Army put together a nine-match win streak that included decisions over Springfield, Southern Connecticut State, Navy, Air Force, James Madison and William & Mary. Junior Brian Lee qualified for the individual finals in three events in helping pace Army to a third-place showing at the West Point Open behind Penn State and Nebraska. Team captain NateWhitten, Kyle Welsh and freshman Mike Oliveira shined on pommel horse, floor exercise and parallel bars, respectively, in the preliminary round to advance to the individual finals. The Black Knights were represented in five of the six events in all. In addition to Lee earning a title on rings, Whitten and Oliveira were thirdplace finishers on pommel horse and parallel bars. Penn State s Kevin Tan and Lee, who ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in the GymInfo polls throughout the year, wrote the headlines as the two former club team members and California natives went head-to-head on still rings throughout the season. Lee tied with Tan, the defending NCAA champion, posting a careerhigh 9.75 in Army s home opener against the Nittany Lions. He then suffered his first dual loss in settling for second place at Penn State s Rec Hall. In between, the two rinsgmen met at the West Point Open and again at the Winter Cup Challenge. After finishing second to Tan on rings in the preliminary round at the West Point Open, Lee tied him for the individual title with a That mark just missed tying his career-high of 9.85 scored against Southern Connecticut State in drawing closer to the school record of 9.9. A week later the two ringsmen competed at the Winter Cup Challenge where Tan defended his title and Lee finished sixth overall and second among collegians. The Black Knights successfully defended their All-Academy title for the fourth straight year with Lee tripling on rings, high bar and parallel bars. Whitten defended his pommel horse title along with taking second in the all-around. Army defeated Navy the following week with Lee tripling for the second straight meet and fourth time of the season in a romp over the Mids, securing the Black Knights first win in Annapolis since Welsh recorded a career-high 9.3 in winning vault as Army posted its fourth straight victory over Navy. Competing for the third straight week against a service academy, the Black Knights scored their highest point total of the season before the hometown crowd in rolling past Air Force. Whitten set season highs in winning pommel horse, high bar and all-around. Lee was first on rings and parallel bars. Whitten tripled, tying in two events with younger brother Brandon, and Lee also doubled as No. 9 Army defeated No. 14 William & Mary in its final home meet. It was Army s highest ranking of the season, equaling the best mark under Van Everen. The Black Knights headed into the ECAC conference meet ranked second behind host and top-seeded UIC. William & Mary was third followed by two-time defending champion Temple. Army s second-place finish to UIC clinched the first NCAA berth under Van Everen, while Lee and the Whitten brothers led a contingent of seven gymnasts who advanced to the finals. Lee captured his first Eastern title with a 9.825, equaling his second highest mark of the season. His title on still rings was Army s first since Freshman Brandon Whitten was named the Rookie of the Year. He became the third Black Knight under Van Everen to win rookie honors. The Maine native scored a career-high 9.0 in placing third on floor exercise and equaled his career mark of 9.2 in a sixth-place finish on vault in the preliminary round to advance to the finals in both events where he placed 10th and fifth, respectively. Nate Whitten qualified for the finals in four events at ECACs, highlighted by a career-high 9.35 second-place finish on pommel horse. He finished third on high bar and Chris Kennedy was runner-up on pommel horse behind a career-high 9.3 showing in the finals. Army will be among the nation s elite this weekend as part of the 12- team field at the NCAA Championships. The Black Knights will be in familiar company, having competed against three (Penn State, Nebraska, UIC) of the schools invited to the NCAAs. 5 HEAD COACH DOUG VAN EVEREN Army s gymnastics program has ascended to new heights since the emergence of the Doug Van Everen era at West Point in Now in his second decade, the level of success the 14th-year mentor has enjoyed is the reason the Black Knights continually rank among the nation s leaders. After sending a record 12 individuals to the 2003 NCAA Championships, bettering the previous high of eight who met the standard in 2001, Van Everen reached another milestone this season when his 12thranked Black Knights earned their first bid to the NCAA Men s Gymnastics Championships since 1963 after qualifying with a score of Army s second-place finish at this year s ECAC Championships clinched the NCAA berth in a revised qualifying format. Van Everen compiled a 10-4 mark en route to leading his team to their fourth straight All- Academy title along with sweeping Navy and Air Force twice during the course of the season. Army ranked as high as No. 9 nationally the past two years along with compiling a 23-5 mark under the veteran mentor. In spite of its 42-year lapse in qualifying as a team for the NCAA Championships, Army has been well represented individually the previous 11 years with the count at 32 over a four-year span. Committed to excellence, Van Everen is one of the most respected coaches in his profession. Twice last year he was tabbed by his peers for ECAC and East Regional coaching honors, the second time in his career in the latter, after leading Army to one of is finest performances in school history. His gymnasts defeated defending ECAC champion and NCAA qualifier Temple during a 12-meet win streak for their best start since en route to a 13-1 mark. That momentum carried into the postseason with a pair of runner-up finishes at the ECAC and USAGC Championships, while closing out the season with an NCAA All-American, five USAGC All-America certificates and a USAGC national champion. An excellent recruiter, Van Everen s teams have had eight top four finishes at the Eastern Championships along with a strong presence at the NCAA Championships. Van Everen has coached several of the finest gymnasts in Army history. Under his guidance, Imad Haque, Ben Hayward, Mike Sivulka, Steve Marshall, Dustin Greenhill, Troy Pazcoguin, Matt Eckerman, John Robella and Brian Lee laid claim to national and regional honors. He has tutored three NCAA All-Americans along with 13 Eastern champions. Haque, a 1993 and 1994 Eastern still rings champion, was the first All-American coached by Van Everen following a sixth-place finish at the 1994 NCAA Championships. Ben Hayward was a three-time Eastern pommel horse champion who added an All-America certificate to his brilliant career following a fifthplace finish at the NCAAs in Greenhill, Army s latest NCAA All- American, finished runner-up on the parallel bars last spring in the highest showing under Van Everen. Also claiming Eastern titles were Sivulka, Marshall, Pazcoguin, Matt Eckerman, John Robella and most recently Lee. Sivulka, a two-time Eastern pommel horse champion (1994 and 95), ranked No. 1 in the nation throughout most of his junior year and was among the national leaders at the end of the season, A parallel bars Eastern champion in 1995, Marshall captured the all-around title the following year to become the first Black Knight to win that crown since Throughout his final year, Marshall ranked as high as second nationally in all-around scoring and was among the top 10 in each of the six individual events. He also earned a spot on the senior national team in 1995 and was third on the vault at the USA Championships.. Pazcoguin ranked among the national leaders on vault his junior and senior campaigns and was a four-time NCAA qualifier. He was tabbed the Senior Athlete of the Year at the Eastern Championships his senior year (2002) after garnering rookie honors in Eckerman became just the second Black Knight to capture an Eastern crown on floor exercise and first since 1980 when he claimed the title in 2002, while Robella won that crown last year. Lee captured the still rings title this spring as Army won that event for the first time in 10 years. He also finished sixth on the rings at the Winter Cup Classic and has ranked No. 2 in the country all season. Lee, crowned a national still rings champion, joined Mike Tiffany (parallel bars, still rings), Chris Kennedy (pommel horse) and Robella (high bar) in garnering All-America honors. Robella was also named a USA Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete. All but one of 14 school records (team and individual) have been shattered in Van Everen s tenure. Last year Army set a school vault record, breaking the previous mark set five years ago. Van Everen has guided to runner-up honors at the ECAC Championships three times over a six-year span. Army s placing in 1999 was its highest in over a decade, then equaled that the past two years. In 1998, Army ranked among an elite group of 20 teams selected for national academic honors by the College Gymnastics Association. Posting a team grade-point average of 3.07, Army placed 12th, beating both Navy (15th) and Air Force (16th). Jeff Means, Hayward and John Doss were among 49 individuals honored as 1998 All-America scholar-athletes who earned a 3.5 grade-point average or better. In addition to turning out nationally-ranked gymnasts, the U.S. Military Academy has become a showcase as one of the premier venues for prominent gymnastics meets. Army has hosted the West Point Open, one of the largest meets on the East Coast, along with serving as the host school for the NCAA East Regional and ECAC Championships. Through the tireless efforts of Van Everen, Army will take center stage at the highest level with its selection as the site to host the 2005 Men s Gymnastics NCAA Championships, marking its second appearance at West Point and first since Prior to becoming Army s sixth head coach, Van Everen was the head mentor at San Jose State for three years ( ). He directed his squad to an 8-11 record and a trip to the NCAA Western Regionals his final year in compiling a mark of He had nine scholar-athletes on his 1990 squad and ranked among the nation s Top 20 in team scoring average. Van Everen has made a name for himself on the national level with his work ethic. He has served as president of the College Gymnastics Association for three years ( ) and coached the USA National Team in 1995 and He served as chairman of the NCAA Gymnastics Rules Committee from , was on the Board of Directors of USA Gymnastics from and developed the College Gymnastics Foundation in 1996 for which he currently serves as president. Van Everen graduated from Cal-State Fullerton in 1987 with a degree in physical education. A four-year letterwinner as an all-arounder, he led Fullerton to the NCAAs in The experience gained working at clinics, clubs, camps and youth gymnastics started Van Everen on the path to coaching and helped him secure the head position at San Jose State following his graduation from college. During that coaching stint, he earned his master s degree in athletic administration from St. Mary s of California in Six years later, Van Everen completed his doctoral requirements in athletic administration. Van Everen and his wife Terri reside at West Point with their two sons, Kirk (13) and Connor (9). Now in his fourth season as a member of the gymnastics staff, Carmine Giglio has played a vital role assisting head coach Doug Van Everen bringing Army to the forefront of college gymnastics. Since his arrival at West Point in the new millennium, Army has crowned an Eastern League champion every year, earned its first bid to the NCAA Men s Gymnastics Championships since 1963, had a school record 12 individuals qualify for the NCAAs, and twice finished second at the ECAC Championships. Giglio has helped Army win the All-Academy title four straight years along with a 7-0 showing against Air Force and 7-1 versus Navy in compiling a dual winning percentage of 76 percent (38-12). Giglio s first season (2001) was marked by the Black Knights posting their second-highest winning percentage (.667) in Van Everen s tenure along with an Eastern League champion and a record eight gymnasts qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Army defeated Navy three times during the season in compiling an 8-3 mark. His second season saw Army crown its first Eastern champion on floor exercise since 1980 along with six gymnasts qualifying for the NCAA Championship meet. Army also defended its title at the All-Academy Championships in outpointing both Navy and Air Force. Last year proved one of the finest seasons in school history. Army authored a 13-1 dual mark, posted a pair of second place finishes at the ECAC and USAGC Championships, qualified a record 12 individuals for the NCAA Championships and claimed an All-American. Army crowned an ECAC champion and USAGC national champion along with garnering five USAGC All-America certificates. A berth to the NCAA Championships following a second-place finish at the ECAC Championships was the highest achievement this spring. Army crowned its first ECAC still rings champion in ten years and its 10-4 mark included a pair of wins over Navy and Air Force. A seven-year veteran at the junior boys level at the club coaching ranks, Giglio served five years as director and head coach at Keystone Gymnastics (Pa.) and was a co-owner his final year prior to his arrival at Army. Giglio held a similar position for two years as co-owner at Penn- Jersey Gymnastics. As a collegian, Giglio enjoyed a standout career at Western Michigan University. The three-time captain became the first Bronco to qualify for the NCAA Championships in all-around following a ninth-place finish at the East Regionals his senior campaign. After earning his bachelor s degree in exercise science with a minor in health from Western Michigan in 1990, Giglio began his coaching career on the staff at the International Gymnastics School. During that threeyear period, he also competed at the 1992 USA Gymnastics Championships and the 1993 Winter Cup Challenge. He finished 19th in the allaround at both competitions along with second and third-place finishes, respectively, on the pommel horse. A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Giglio won state titles in the all-around, pommel horse and horizontal bars in leading Henninger High School to the No. 1 state ranking in He was also a junior national qualifier NCAA Gymnastics Championships 5
