Don t count anyone, or any team, out because anything is possible. The 2002 Trojans, the lowest seed (11th) to ever capture an NCAA men s tennis national title, took everyone by surprise as they rallied to defeat four of the top six teams in the NCAA Tournament (No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Tennessee, No. 3 Illinois and No. 6 Baylor) and brought home the program s 16th national championship. They did so behind the efforts of then-freshman Prakash Amritraj (Encino, Calif.), who clinched USC s wins in the quarterfinal, semifinal and final in dramatic fashion and was named NCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player. They did so behind three seniors, Andrew Park, Ryan Moore and Nick Rainey, who were heralded as three of the top recruits in the country in 1998, but had been unable to push their teams past the Round of 16 in previous seasons. Their leadership and talent guided the Trojans amazing run. They did so behind then-sophomores, Daniel Langre (Mexico City, Mexico) and Ruben Torres (Cali, Colombia), who provided the stability necessary to win each of their matches, never dropping a match throughout the tournament run. Both were named to the NCAA All-Tournament team at their respective positions. And they did so behind USC s 23-year head coach Dick Leach, who announced his retirement just two weeks prior to the start of the NCAA Tournament. But this season, USC must listen to its own lessons. Under first-year head coach Peter Smith, the 2003 defending national champion Trojans find themselves back at square one with only three returners from last year s squad and nine newcomers to integrate. But don t count them out. The returners on this team benefited greatly from their experiences last season, said Smith, who came to USC after spending the last five seasons at Pepperdine where he guided the Waves to five West Coast Conference championships. I hope that they can help the team understand that even if we struggle at times this season, if we peak at the right time, anything is possible. Smith brings his own history of success to Troy. He guided Pepperdine to the NCAA Tournament in each of his five seasons, reaching the NCAA Quarterfinals in 1998 and Including his seven years at Fresno State ( ) prior to moving to Malibu in 1998, his teams have made nine consecutive NCAA appearances and have finished among the nation s Top 20 seven times. His 2002 Pepperdine squad posted a 25-6 record and finished fifth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. Last years ITA Region VIII Coach of the Year (he also won it in 2000), Smith understands the level of success that is expected at USC. My program goals have always been to compete for national championships, win conference championships, go undefeated at home and do so while maintaining a 3.0 team grade point average, said Smith. I know that this team is capable of doing the same. Yes, we are missing a lot of experience and talent from last season and it is very hard to replace those characteristics. But we have a lot of talent on this squad and we have a group that is willing to work extremely hard this season. Back for his sophomore season is Amritraj, who took time off this fall to play as an amateur in professional tournaments. During the break he captured the USTA Boys 18s Super National Hard Court Championship in August and picked up a first-round upset victory at the Mercedes-Benz Cup in July to highlight his season. Prakash has evolved into a really good player, said Smith. He is so coachable. His game continues to improve and he has a great attitude out on the court. He will play a large role in our success this season. Making the jump from the No. 3 spot where he played as a freshman, Amritraj likely will play at No. 1 this season. In 2002 he compiled a 14-9 (.609) dual match record at No. 3 and also played matches at the No. 1 (2-0), No. 2 (1-1) and No. 4 (2-0) positions. With a (.605) overall singles mark, he finished the season ranked No. 71 in the final singles poll. Some may have considered Langre, a current redshirt junior, and Torres, a junior, to be the strength of USC s lineup last season. This year they are expected to also make a jump in the lineup. 2

5 These two guys are not only outstanding players, but solid contributors to this team, said Smith. They are both very talented and the type of players who hate to lose. We have no seniors on this team, so the leadership role will have to be carried by these returners. Playing primarily at the No. 5 position, Langre compiled a overall record in 2002 and a mark in dual matches (3-2 at No. 4, 14-7 at No. 5 and 2-1 at No. 6). Torres, who put together the team s best winning percentage (80.0) in 2002, finished the season with a 32-8 overall singles record and 22-5 (.815) record in dual matches (6-2 at No. 5 and 16-3 at No. 6). With the loss of Rainey, a 2002 ITA singles and doubles All-American, Moore, a 2002 doubles All- American, and Park, last season s team captain and 2001 singles All-American, the Trojans hope to fill the void with its nine new additions. Pepperdine transfer Johan Berg (Stockholm, Sweden), a sophomore, is a player capable of filling one of the top spots left behind. Johan is a player with unlimited potential, with one of the best serves and forehands on the team, said Smith, who recruited Berg at Pepperdine and coached him as a freshman in As soon as he understands how to be more powerful on the court, he will become an even better player. Berg joined the Waves in January of 2002 and posted a 20-7 dual match record, playing primarily at the No. 4 position. After a strong fall performance this season, the 75th-ranked Berg enters 2003 as the only Trojan rated among the ITA Top 100 singles. Coming off redshirt seasons, junior Parker Collins (Newport Beach, Calif.) and freshman Jeff Kazarian (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) missed the Trojans championship run, but will have their opportunity this year to compete in the starting rotation. In his first two seasons at USC, Collins competed at No. 6 and put together a (.400) overall singles record. A successful prep player at Peninsula High in Rancho Palos Verdes, this is Kazarian s first opportunity to compete at USC after being sidelined last year with a back injury. We are excited to have Parker and Jeff back in the lineup, said Smith. We need Parker for his talent and experience because he has been a part of this team for three years. Jeff is a great competitor who has yet to reach his potential. We just need to get him back to 100 percent health. Waiting in the wings while also trying to recover from injuries are USC newcomers Brian Wright (Fresno, Calif.), a sophomore, and freshman Aaron Badart (San Marino, Calif.). Wright also transferred from Pepperdine this season to follow Smith. In 2002 in his first year with the Waves, he competed mainly in doubles with Waves teammate Calle Hansen. The duo posted a 16-7 record at No. 3 for the year. His playing time was limited because of knee injuries to both knees. He underwent surgery this summer. As soon as he gets back to top form, Brian is capable of becoming a Top 10 player, said Smith, who recruited Wright, along with Berg, at Pepperdine. He is also a diamond in the rough. He just needs to work on continuing to get healthy this year. Badart, who prepped at Pendleton High in Bradenton, Fla., did not compete this fall due to a back injury. Because of the injuries USC has had so far, junior Scott Patterson (La Canada, Calif.) has already proven to be an important asset to the team. Patterson transferred to Troy this fall from Glendale (Calif.) Junior College. At Glendale he played No. 1 in both singles and doubles for the last two seasons. In 2002 he went undefeated in singles play. Freshmen Sumil Menon (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), son of USC three-time All-American Sashi Menon ( ), and Whit Livingston (Sacramento, Calif.) and redshirt freshman Daniel Tontz (San Diego, Calif.) round out the 2003 Trojan roster. All three are capable of stepping into the singles or doubles lineup for the Trojans, if necessary. Due to the number of new players of the team, doubles play will work itself out as the season progresses. The only definite is the pairing of Amritraj and Langre. Amritraj and Langre earned NCAA All- Tournament honors in 2002 at No. 3 doubles after defeating the teams from Tennessee and Georgia in the semifinals and finals. Putting together a 16-4 (80.0) overall record, the duo finished the season with the team s best doubles winning percentage. As part of the nation s most competitive tennis conference, USC will face its share of challenges this season, including matchups with Top 10-ranked foes UCLA (Jan. 31 and March 7), Stanford (April 4 and 19) and California (April 5 and 18). All eight of the Pac-10 teams (only eight Pac-10 schools sponsor men s tennis) are ranked among the top 75 in the ITA preseason poll, including No. 1 UCLA, No. 4 Stanford, No. 7 USC, No. 10 Cal, No. 20 Washington, No. 41 Arizona State, No. 61 Arizona and No. 73 Oregon. This is definitely going to be an unbelievably strong year for the Pac-10, said Smith. I hope our experiences from last season will help us become even more competitive in conference play. After competing at the ITA Indoor Championships Feb in Lousiville, Ky., the Trojans will prepare for the most difficult part of the schedule in March and April when they play all seven of their conferencecounting matches. USC will also host top nonconference competition, including home matches against Tulane (March 11), Pepperdine (March 14) and Utah (March 22). We have a tough road ahead of us, but I was very happy to see that we were ranked among the preseason Top 10 despite the players we lost from the 2002 team, said Smith. It really says a lot about USC and its championship tradition. I am truly honored to be entering my first season at a university with such a rich tradition of excellence. If we can stay healthy this year, then we ll be alright. So don t count the Trojans out in ITA PRESEASON RANKINGS 1. UCLA 2. Illinois 3. Baylor 4. Stanford 5. Florida 6. Georgia 7. USC 8. 6 COACHING STAFF PETER SMITH Head Coach First Season at USC Peter Smith, who guided the Pepperdine men s tennis team to conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances in each of his five years there, was named head coach of the national champion USC men s tennis team in June of Smith becomes only the third head coach in USC men s tennis history. Smith replaced Dick Leach, who retired following the 2002 season after guiding the Trojans to four NCAA championships (including the 2002 title) in his 23 years at USC. Leach will remain on staff at USC as emeritus director of men s tennis, advising athletic director Mike Garrett and Smith on the development of the Trojan tennis program, as well as helping raise funds. We are very fortunate to have someone of this caliber replace legendary coach Dick Leach, said USC senior associate athletic director Daryl Gross. Peter Smith is one of the best coaches in the country and he will keep the Trojan tennis tradition alive. He is an incredible teacher and motivator. It s just and a perfect fit at USC. We could not be more pleased. This is a dream come true for me to receive such an incredible opportunity, said Smith, whose 15-year head coaching mark while at Pepperdine, Fresno State and Long Beach State stands at (.667) and whose teams have been in the last nine NCAA tournaments. USC has such a prestigious athletic and academic history and I am so proud to be a part of it. I knew I wanted to be part of the best. Smith, 38, is coming off a 25-6 season at Pepperdine, in which he led the 2002 Waves to the NCAA quarterfinals and a final No. 5 national ranking. He earned his fifth straight West Coast Conference Coach of the Year honor and was tabbed the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Region VIII Coach of the Year for the second time in the last three years (he also won it in 2000). In five years at Pepperdine ( ), Smith compiled a (.792) dual match record and finished in the Top 20 every year. The Waves won the WCC title and advanced to at least the second round of the NCAA Championships each season. He coached eight All-Americans during his tenure in Malibu (Robert Lindstedt, Kelly Gullett, John Hui, Anthony Ross, Robert Kendrick, Stefan Sutter, Sebastien Graeff and Al Garland). Smith spent the previous six seasons ( ) as men s tennis head coach at Fresno State, transforming the Bulldogs into a Top 20 program. His dual match record at Fresno State was (.642). He led the Bulldogs to their first-ever NCAA tourney in 1994 and coached the program s first-ever All-American (Fredrik Bergh) in In all, he guided the Bulldogs into the NCAAs in his last four seasons and coached four All-Americans (Gullett, who followed him to Pepperdine, Fredrik Berg, Fredrik Giers and Robert Lindstedt). Smith enjoyed his greatest success at Fresno State in 1996 when the team won its first Western Athletic Conference title, posted a 23-5 dual-match record (the best in school history) and earned its thirdstraight NCAA berth with a No. 6 national ranking. Smith earned a bachelor s degree in liberal studies from Long Beach State in 1987 and was a four-year letterwinner for the 49ers. After playing professional tennis for 15 months and competing in such prestigious events as the U.S. Open and Wimbledon, Smith returned to Long Beach State and became the youngest Division I men s tennis head coach at age 23. He served as the 49ers head coach for four years ( ), compiling an overall record of (.515). In 1989, Long Beach State posted a dual match record and completed the season ranked No. 25 nationally. 7 COACHING STAFF BRETT HANSEN Assistant Coach Second Season at USC Brett Hansen enters his second season as assistant coach to the USC men s tennis program. A former player at USC who helped the Trojans capture the 1994 national championship, Hansen managed to match his success as an athlete by helping lead the 2002 Trojans to the NCAA title in just his first season as an assistant coach. Hansen, 28, can now add last season s accomplishment to his list of successes as an intercollegiate tennis player at Troy and his four-year career on the professional circuit, which came to an end after suffering a knee injury. Prior to joining the Trojans staff in December of 2001, Hansen spent six months (June-Nov., 2001) as an instructor at New York Tennisport (professional tennis club), where he worked with top juniors and newcomers to the professional ranks. Out of college in 1995, Hansen played World Team Tennis for the Idaho Sneakers and was named 1995 Rookie of the Year and the tour s Most Valuable Player. After two seasons with the WTT, he joined the ATP tour and played professionally from He enjoyed his greatest successes and received his highest career tour rankings in 1997 (No. 90 doubles, No. 300 doubles). In March of 1998 he retired from the circuit after a knee injury. Collegiately, Hansen attended UC Irvine for his first two years then transferred to USC as a junior. In his first season he helped guide USC to the 1994 NCAA Championship. He earned ITA All-American honors as a junior and senior and was ranked the No. 2 singles player and No. 15 doubles pair (with partner Fernando Samayoa) in the 1996 final ITA rankings. As a senior he advanced to the NCAA Championship singles finals and the doubles quarterfinals. He also won the 1995 Rolex Intercollegiate Championship, 1996 National Collegiate Tennis Classic singles championship and the 1996 Pac-10 doubles crown. Hansen is a 1990 graduate of Newport Harbor High in Newport Beach, Calif., where he won the CIF, Ojai and Sea View League titles as a senior. His father, Phil Dent, is also a former professional tennis player who once ranked No. 12 internationally. Born on July 2, 1974, Hansen is single and resides in Newport Beach, Calif. Jefferson Hammond enters his first season as a volunteer assistant coach to the USC men s tennis program. This is his second season in collegiate tennis after spending 2002 as an administrative assistant for UC Irvine men s tennis. In addition to his time spent at UCI, Hammond s tennis experience spans the high school, collegiate and professional levels. As recently as 2001, he was ranked No. 1 in the Southern California Tennis Association (SCTA) rankings for men s 30s singles. Hammond, 31, was the boys varsity tennis coach at University High in Irvine, Calif., for two seasons ( ), leading University to two C.I.F. team championships during that time. Following the 2000 championship, he was named the Orange County Register Orange County Coach of the Year. Prior to taking the University head coaching position, Hammond served as the assistant tennis pro at the Pointe Hilton on South Mountain in Phoenix, Ariz. Hammond earned a bachelor s degree in history from the University of Vermont in 1993, where he played collegiate tennis. He was the team co-captain in 1993 and helped lead Vermont to the North Atlantic Conference championship in Following graduation he spent time playing the U.S. satellite circuit. Born on May 29, 1971, in Indianapolis, Ind., Hammond prepped at Southport High in Indianapolis. He and his wife, Amy, have a newborn son, Eric, and currently reside in Aliso Viejo, Calif. JEFFERSON HAMMOND Volunteer Assistant Coach First Season at USC DICK LEACH Head Coach Emeritus It would be difficult to find a collegiate men s tennis coach with a more successful career than USC s Dick Leach, who led the Trojans to four national titles in 23 years at the helm of the USC program before announcing his retirement in May of Following retirement, Leach adopted a new role at USC as emeritus director of men s tennis. In this position he is responsible for advising athletic director Mike Garrett and Peter Smith on the development of the Trojan tennis program, as well as helping raise funds for USC tennis. Fittingly, Leach captured one last NCAA title in his final season. USC, which went 25-5 in , entered the 2002 NCAAs as the No. 11 seed and upset the Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 6 seeds en route to the title. Leach was honored as the 2002 Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year and Pac-10 Coach of the Year. Leach retired with 535 career victories, four NCAA team titles (1991, , 2002), two NCAA singles champs (Robert Van t Hof, Cecil Mamiit), three NCAA doubles champs (Rick Leach and Tim Pawsat, Rick Leach and Scott Melville, Eric Amend and Byron Black) and seven Pac-10 titles (1980, 1984, 1987, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994). He compiled a steller record of (.797) and led his teams to many outstanding seasons while at USC, including a trip to the NCAA Championships in 22 of his 23 years. Leach played tennis at USC from 1959 to 1961 (under George Toley) and achieved All-American third team honors in He received 26 U.S. national rankings in singles and doubles. He and his wife, Sandy, have four children, including sons Rick, a four-year USC All-American ( ) and twotime NCAA doubles champion ( ), and Jon, a four-time USC All-American and member of three of Leach s national championship teams (1991, ). His daughter Mindy was a varsity tennis player at Alabama from

Underneath the stadium is the beautiful Leonard Andrews Varsity Lounge and Team Room, along with two locker rooms. The locker rooms were recently renovated through a generous gift made by John and Michelle Katnik of Diversified Development. Each lockerroom features the program s recent conference championship trophies, Hall of Fame walls with past NCAA singles and doubles champions, as well as the men s and women s national championship trophies. USC also has what may be the largest tennis scoreboard in the United States. The Martin Massman Scoreboard completed just prior to the 1989 season is a tally board and message center which keeps fans and participants up-to-date on the matches in progress. At the entrance to the stadium is a list of all 16 of the USC men s national champion years and seven women s tennis national championships, including a newly-added 2002 for last year s men s tennis title squad. The stadium was dedicated in 1973 when former Trojan stars Alex Olmedo, Stan Smith, Dennis Ralston and Bob Lutz held a tennis exhibition. The 1974 men s NCAA Tournament was held at Marks Stadium (USC finished second). 6

14 TROJANS CLAIM 2002 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP! President George Bush Honors NCAA Champion USC Men s Tennis Team Trojans complete upset run with 4-1 victory over No. 1 Georgia COLLEGE STATION, Texas (May 21, 2002) - USC coach Dick Leach spent 12 seasons in search of his first national championship. Freshman Prakash Amritraj needed just one. Amritraj led the Trojans on May 21 to their fourth national title under Leach to close out Leach s 23-year career. USC (25-5) won its 16th men s title. In one four-day run in College Station, Texas, the underdog Trojans upset four of the country s top six teams, capped off by a 4-1 victory over top-seeded Georgia. This is unbelievable. I keep pinching myself. I m so proud of these guys... I ve come to College Station to retire! -- Dick Leach Eleventh-seeded USC took down fourth-ranked Baylor, 4-2, third-ranked Illinois, 4-2, fifth-ranked Tennessee, 4-3, and the defending national champion Bulldogs. In doing so, the Trojans became the lowest seeded team to ever win the title. Amritraj clinched all three upsets for USC in the tournament quarterfinals, semifinals and final, including a 7-6 (3), 7-5 win over Georgia s Bo Hodge to end the run. He was named the tournament most valuable player. There s momentum in sports and once that momentum starts, it s like a runaway freight train, said Leach. These kids were not going to be denied. I could see it in their eyes. They were possessed. USC, which rallied to win four singles matches in both the quarterfinals and semifinals, won the doubles point against the Bulldogs to start the championship match. The team winning doubles got us off to a great start. It was our best doubles and probably our best singles all year, Leach said. Amritraj and Daniel Langre turned in the first doubles victory this season over Georgia s Nicolas Boeker and Lesley Joseph, 8-3. Amritraj and Langre broke serve at love to take a 7-3 lead and served for the match. The victory gave USC s No. 2 team of Teige Sullivan and Ruben Torres, already with a 7-3 lead of their own, two serves to clinch the point. Sullivan and Torres took their first opportunity on serve to beat the Bulldogs team of Adam Seri and Brandon Wagner 8-4. We were sluggish in doubles which I thought we would break out of, but that never happened, Georgia coach Maual Diaz said. USC carried the momentum on the singles courts, winning four of six first sets. Matias Boeker won Georgia s only point at No. 1 singles over Andrew Park 6-1, 7-5 to cut USC s lead to 2-1. Torres gave Amritraj the chance to clinch with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over the Bulldogs Nicolas Boeker. (Sept. 25, 2002) - After capturing USC s 16th men s tennis NCAA championship in May, the 2002 Trojan tennis team received something the previous 15 Trojan champions did not - a personal invitation to the White House by President George W. Bush. The team flew to Washington D.C., as one of 10 teams invited to take part in the 2002 NCAA Spring Sports Championship Day hosted at the White House on Tuesday, Sept. 24. After spending Tuesday morning visiting sites such as the U.S. Capitol Building, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Trojans arrived at the White House at 1 p.m. and awaited the arrival of President Bush in the Blue Room. Bush greeted the team and congratulated Leach and the players on their achievement. After Bush posed for an official photo with the team, the Trojans were led to the East Room, where they were introduced and entered to the playing of Fight On by a Marine Corps quartet. In front of media and guests, President Bush addressed the student-athletes and encouraged them to be champions off the field, especially in this time of challenge for our country. I happen to believe you have a responsibility to set an example for others, that as you succeed on the field of play, you have to remember there are youngsters looking at you, trying to determine how they should live their life, Bush said. You ve got an opportunity as champions to be champions off the field in the community in which you live. Following his remarks, each team presented Bush with a gift. Andrew Park, senior team captain of the 2002 Trojan tennis squad, gave the President a USCinscribed tennis racket and Bush showed off his backhand upon accepting the gift. The whole thing was very surreal, said Park. It was unbelievable. I never thought I d be so nervous shaking another man s hand and I never thought it would be the President of the United States. It s like I m living a dream. The Trojans whirlwind tour ended later that day when they boarded a flight back to Los Angeles. 12
