UNCG Opens Home Schedule Against Intra-Triad Rival After winning five of its first seven matches of the season away from home, the UNCG volleyball team makes its Fleming Gymnasium debut Tuesday evening against intra-triad rival. The Spartans won three of four matches at the DISH Tennessee Volleyball Classic last weekend defeating Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee Tech and North Florida and falling to host Tennessee. Redshirt freshman middle hitter Jasmine Jones picked up all-tournament honors after averaging 2.44 kills per set and 0.69 blocks per set while hitting.309 over four matches. UNCG currently sits atop the Southern Conference standings with a 5-2 record and will play three of its next four contests inside Fleming Gymnasium. In taking a look at the league statistics, the Spartans are second in opposing hitting percentage and third in digs per set while senior defensive specialist Katherine Santiago paces all players in digs with a 4.80 per set average. She racked up 81 digs in four matches at the Tennessee tournament averaging over five per set. has won the last three meetings with UNCG as the Spartans have not beaten the Panthers since 2011 in Greensboro. leads the overall series by a 10-6 margin. 2 WHAT S BACK? UNCG returns five starters (including libero) from a 2014 squad that was overall and 11-5 in Southern Conference play - good for second place in the league standings. Below is a numerical breakdown of what is coming back for the Spartans this season. CATEGORY RETURNING/2014 TOTAL PERCENTAGE Kills 915 / 1, % Assists 1,378 / 1, % Aces 97 / % Digs 1,522 / 1, % Total Blocks 194 / % A GOOD OMEN? The Spartans 5-2 start matches last season s squad that went on to win 20 games and make a semifinal appearance in the Southern Conference tournament. STINGY COMPETITION UNCG s two losses have occurred to Liberty and Tennessee - a pair of teams that sport a combined record of Moreover, both setbacks occurred in the Friday night premier match of both tournaments on the opposing squads home floors. KEEPING THE COMPOSURE Since head coach Corey Carlin took over the Spartan volleyball program, UNCG has posted a 5-2 record in five-set matches. The Blue and Gold won both of its five-set affairs last weekend in Tennessee. FAST START IS KEY UNCG has won all five of its matches this season when capturing the first set. Under Carlin, the Spartans are 21-1 when winning the first set. OFFENSIVE OPTIONS ABOUND The Spartans are getting a lot of people involved in the offense early in 2015 as five players check in with at least 2.00 kills per set. Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Muench leads the way at 2.92 kills per set while junior outside hitter Alexis Mourier is hitting a team-best.269. WELCOME TO THE SHOW A number of student-athletes made their first appearances for the Blue and Gold at the Liberty Invitational in redshirt freshman middle hitter Jasmine Jones, freshman setter Allison Penner, freshman defensive specialist Christina Gregory and junior outside hitter Alexis Mourier. Junior middle hitter Chinwendu Ngwadom saw her first action last weekend at the Tennessee Classic. 1,000 ACHIEVED Junior libero Katherine Santiago and sophomore setter Sara Hohman both eclipsed the 1,000 mark for digs and assists in their careers at last year s Liberty Invitational. Santiago reached the milestone in the five-set victory over USC Upstate while Hohman did so in the tournament finale versus Liberty. Additionally, Hohman passed the 2,000 assist plateau in last year s conference tournament semifinal match. NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS Since the 2006 season, UNCG has posted an record in non-conference matches. In that stretch, the Spartans have suffered just one losing non-league campaign. RPI REPORT In 2014, UNCG produced its best showing the NCAA ratings percentage index (RPI) since the 2010 season. The Spartans parlayed their record into a rating of 156. SEASON TEAM RECORD RPI RANKING IRONWOMEN Juniors Sara Hohman and Jessica Brezwyn played in every set for UNCG last season. Departed senior Vicky Harley also suited up for every set. Thus far in 2015, a total of seven Spartans have competed in every set. DOUBLE-DOUBLE MACHINE Hohman finished tied for third in the league in double-doubles last season with 17. Of those double-doubles, 10 occurred in conference play. TOUGHEST PLACES TO PLAY The Spartans have amassed 83 home victories since the 2006 season - the second-most in the Southern Conference behind.
